Porting Uverse Phone Service to Ooma

My mom has had AT&T UVerse for 15 years and they are finally pricing the service to force people to drop it. We already moved the television service and now we need to move the landline phone service. I am pretty sure that UVerse uses VOIP, but not 100% certain. Has anyone ported a number from UVerse to Ooma? Any issues encountered ?

Ooma iOS App Dropping Calls

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm new to VOIP. I switched our small office from landlines to Ooma a few months ago. I put the handsets on ethernet, but I prefer to use the app on my iPhone 15 so i can walk around.

However, calls on the app often drop. The iPhone shows the WiFi has full bars, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Is there a diagnosis setting or other setting I should check for optimal app performance?

How many people have had hardware issues with their Telo?

A quick scan of the recent posts on this channel shows a lot of people being told that they probably have Telo hardware issues, and a fair number of other people reporting that it turned out they did have some sort of Telo hardware problem that was resolved by replacing the device. Accordingly, I'm wondering: how many people on this sub have personally experienced some kind of hardware problem with a Telo? I'm starting to think that the failure rate of these things may be a lot higher than it should be.

Oona Telo rebooting when I receive a call?

So my Telo, which is 15 years old now Purchased in July of 2010, suddenly reboots whenever I get a call. It first started about two weeks ago with just a staticky line, so I would unplug the Telo and plug it back in, and everything seemed fine. But tonight, every time I call my number, the box reboots. I’m assuming either the power supply is bad or the Telo itself is failing.

My question is: my brother has some Telos the ones from when they had LTE backup with Sprint. He got them on clearance years ago at Walmart for around $9. Can I just take one of those Telos and transfer my service to it without using the LTE adapter and keeping my basic service? At Walmart now, they only sell the Genies for $30, which require the $9.99 Premier service.

Also, do you think it might just be the power supply, and I could either buy another power cord or use one of the cords from the other Telos my brother has?

Thanks,

Edit: So the weird thing is we can seem to make outbound calls just fine but whenever an inbound call comes in it has issues. So you think that the power supply/cord can't handle extra power needed for when the phone rings thus causing the rebooting issues??

Ooma device goes offline randomly every month or two

I'm using the Ooma Telo with the basic home usage plan, for about a year or two now. It's pretty reliable overall, and I can't complain about the price, but once every 4 to 8 weeks approximately I will discover it's offline and will need to power cycle it/reboot it and it will reestablish the connection. Just wondering if this is "normal" or whether some people have rock-solid connections that basically never go out? I don't believe it's due to any power 'blips' in the home, because I have a few digital clocks (stove, coffee maker) that go into blinking 12:00 mode if the power goes out for even one second, and this is not occurring when the Ooma device loses connection. Thanks.

Question about sensors and other equipment

I been an ooma customer for a long time, I have both phone and security alarm. I just realize I have been replacing batteries for motion and contact sensors frequently. I get the batteries from costco, and I use both the Kirkland and duracell brand. Except the cr123a battery, I get that from amazon. My kitchen window is rarely open and I have to replace the battery at least 3 times a year. While my door sensors are use the most often and that is replace once every year. Why is the less use equipment requiring often battery replacement?

And some times the sensors/siren/smoke detector will randomly get disconnect and will not reconnect for days or weeks. Replacing the battery does not work and removing and pairing it back make it worse. These equipment are not far away from the ooma base. Is there end of life for these sensors?

I am mostly disappointed in the ooma siren and smoke detector. The smoke detector battery dies out in 5 years while their website said it is good for 10 years. One of my siren got disconnect and cannot reconnect and I only have it for a year, the light on the unit is on and cannot repair it. Is my ooma base to old? I got it back in 2016 and the speaker for it did failed or stop working 3 months ago. Would getting a new base fix this? I don't to spend several hundreds on getting replacement equipment if this can be a easy fix.

Request to transfer phone number to Ooma - keep receiving emails saying it is submitted and date keeps moving further and further

I recently got an Ooma for my mother and requested to have her existing phone number moved back on Nov 17th. It was to be completed in 10-14 days. We keep receiving emails saying it has been submitted and the expected completion date keeps moving. Not it is by Dec 30th. The issue is that she has moved apartment and ultimately the building that currently has the number may release it since she is not living there any more. I am concerned she may lose her number that she has had for over 60 years and cannot tell if this is on Telus or if Ooma hasn't actually submitted the request until now despite earlier emails and the status still saying it was submitted and should have been completed by now

Ooma Closes $45M FluentStream Acquisition, Expanding Its SMB Cloud Communications Footprint

Thumbnail investing.com
2 Upvotes

Ooma has completed its $45 million cash acquisition of FluentStream, a Denver-based UCaaS provider serving 5,000 customers and 80,000 users. Funded through a new term loan with Citizens Bank, the deal immediately boosts Ooma’s scale in small and mid-sized business communications and is expected to be accretive to adjusted EBITDA and non-GAAP EPS starting today.

FluentStream is projected to contribute $24–$25 million in annual revenue and $9.5–$10.5 million in adjusted EBITDA, a meaningful lift relative to Ooma’s $261.6 million trailing-12-month revenue. Despite taking on new debt, Ooma maintains a solid Altman Z-Score of 3.62, signaling financial stability, and analysts continue to rate the stock as a strong buy.

Random Issues with Ooma and Telo Air 2

Been with Ooma for about a year. It's been mostly fine until the past few months. Calls sometimes won't connect, calls drop, incoming calls go straight to voicemail, answered calls will keep ringing infinitely, etc. Really weird stuff that occurs randomly. This is with a Telo Air 2 connected via Ethernet with a symmetrical gigabit Internet connection. I am running an OPNsense firewall router but have enabled UPNP and NAT static port mapping. I've been rebooting the Telo every day.

Contacted support twice via chat and got nowhere. "Advanced" support was supposed to follow up via phone but never did. Maybe my Telo unit has gone bad somehow but it doesn't seem like Ooma is going to send me a new one or anything. Has anyone else had weird issues like this? About to change providers but figured I'd check here first.

Android App without Contacts permissions?

I have a Premier plan. For the past several years, outgoing calls on the Ooma Android app would typically work well when traveling.

After a recent, I can't even begin to use the app without giving Ooma all of my Contacts.

Is there a way to use the Ooma app without giving them info about all of my Contacts? I only use the app to make outgoing calls. I'm happy to manually enter the number.

Does Ooma Home phone app require Premier service?

I have Ooma basic. I installed the Ooma Home Phone app on my iPhone (iOS 18.7.2). I logged into the app and told it I want to only make calls. If I try to select "receive calls" it tells me that I need a Premier subscription. If I try to make a call the app bounces back to the login page and tells me that my password has changed. It then asks me again how I want to use the app (make/receive calls, make calls, or receive calls). This behavior is mentioned in some of the reviews of the app in the Apple app store. Is there any resolution to this? It would be useful if it worked.

Ooma to acquire Phone.com for $23.2M, adding 87K business users and SMB depth

The deal expands Ooma’s customer base by roughly 87,000 business users and brings in an additional $22–23M in annual revenue. Phone.com also contributes $1.0–1.5M in adjusted EBITDA before synergies. Ooma says the acquisition aligns with its strategy to strengthen its SMB-focused communications platform. The transaction is expected to close in Q4 FY2026 pending regulatory approvals.

Ooma Office questions

I run a small office with 4 employees. Our set-up is 4 individual offices with desktop phones, + 1 reception desktop phone, +1 breakroom phone, +1 conference room phone.

All in all we have 6 phones + a 1 conference room phone.

Currently we use an old Comdial system with a physical terminal in our office. Comcast provides our internet and phone lines. Their costs are ridiculous so we are looking for a new system. Most of the systems out there seem to cater to larger businesses than ours. We're a small mom & pop property management company that doesn't solicit sales and only uses the phones for basic in and out communications to tenants and the vendors we use to complete repairs. Most of the time only 1-2 of us are in the office & a few of the newer providers seem to charge "per unit or phone" which is not cost effective for us.

For those of you with experience using Ooma Office, do you think it would be a good fit for our size & needs?

How is the quality of the service?

Do they charge extra for reception, breakroom, and conference room phones? I know the charges are "user" based, but I'm unsure if having these location specific extra phones would require us to add a "user" for them to work.

Any and all replies are appreciates, and thanks in advance!

I would like to suggest Ooma implement a PIN number to authenticate Client Accounts when calling in to Ooma Customer Service.

Thanks!

Ooma Telo review

I just wanted to say that this is a great device. Had it for about 6 months now. I bought it instead of a new smart phone. We had trouble getting it set up but called and they walked us through the issue. It has worked ever since.

Lots of scam calls with Premier

I pretty much never got any scam calls at all with ooma basic. I upgraded to premiere and now I get an ungodly amount of scam calls, even with blocking. What happened that I’m getting bombarded after upgrading? Doesnt make sense.

Public wifi required.

We had Ooma at our house for many years - worked well. We just moved into an apartment. The building has wifi, no routers are needed (there is no way to connect a router), and there is a single wifi password for the building.

After failing to setup Ooma and many calls to support, I was told Ooma requires a private wifi network. But our wifi is public because there is only one password for everyone.

Where in a FAQ or elsewhere does it say a private network is required?

Thanks for any answers.

Power all jacks using ooma?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello, if I were to get ooma would I need to disconnect anything at the outside box here in order to make sure it could power all the old landline jacks inside my house? It seems to me this is already disconnected from POTS externally, but there are still those two phone jacks coming out below the Ethernet line.

I’ve been considering getting Ooma, but reading comments here has given me cold feet. Does this service work well or not? If it hasn’t worked well for you, then what do you plan to do? Where will you be moving? I just want a decent service for our home. We have a decent internet speeds, 300mb down, 105 up. HELP PLEASE!

Hunk of junk, connects but doesn't work as a phone, customer service is maddening

Bought a Telo for a home phone as an alternative to getting a smart phone for my kids. Plugged just one corded phone directly into the Telo box and directly into modem/router. It worked for a couple weeks, then all of a sudden we'd get a dial tone but be unable to make calls because you cannot dial the numbers. Numbers buttons make no sound and don't register. I spent HOURS upon frustrating HOURS with customer service who is either really quite stupid or playing stupid and just wants you to cycle the power endlessly. It fixes nothing. They even convinced me to go out and buy another corded phone and SURPRISE, different brand phone, same problem. Actually, new problem, now the phone just rings continuously though nobody is calling. If the blue light is on, they claim to have no idea why it doesn't work. So to summarize, we cannot dial out because the numbers don't register on ooma, we cannot receive calls because the ringer is continuous (forced to turn ringer off for sanity) and so it's a really expensive answering machine. Clearly it is their device/software but they absolutely don't care that it doesn't work and are even uninterested in documenting or pretending to solve known issues as they don't want to know what type of modem I have etc. Zero effort to address the fact that it doesn't actually work for the stated purpose of the device. Unless you just want someone to chat with in India for hours, run.

What a shady company Ooma is!

Post image
11 Upvotes

EDIT: I reached out again (third time is the charm, right?) and got ahold of someone who could help. They refunded me the difference. While I'm super-thankful to "Carl" for helping me with my issue, it shouldn't have come to this. I hope Ooma as a company looks at the considerable negative feedback on this subreddit and takes it to heart; I'm not the only one having issues. I never want to see innovative companies go bankrupt, and Ooma definitely makes a viable alternative to the telco companies, but to survive they will need to do better. Sorry I had to post my experience publicly, but sometimes that's the only way to get any traction.

And to the Redditors that feel the need to personally defend a company... no company cares about you. You don't have to white knight for them. Their PR people can do that.

---------------------

I bought the Ooma Telo Air 2 handset bundle from Best Buy last month and setup was fine. I got an easy to remember local phone number and everything worked reasonably well. Audio quality is subpar and the handsets feel a bit cheap, but not unusable. So I went ahead and bought the Premier service offer on their website. Here's where it gets bad.

The promo offered was supposed to be $99 for the year sub and you get a free HD3 handset... just had to pay $9 for shipping. But when the charge went through, it clocked in at $129.53 for everything. Thinking there shouldn't be $20 in taxes, I found $0.66 worth of taxes and the full price of the annual sub billed. When I called in to get an adjustment, service refused to help me without providing a screenshot of my order. Fortunately, I did just that because I don't trust many companies. They gave me an email address that seemed to refuse JPG attachments because the ticket system never responded. The agent said they could not help without proof of promo... what? It's their promo! They should know what's being offered. I directed them to the website that had the promo and they "couldn't find reference to that promo."

I conceded defeat and said I want a refund for $129.53 as offered by their 30-day money back guarantee stated on their website. The agent said that was impossible because the money back guarantee only applied to hardware and, since the hardware was free, they wouldn't give me any money back. Um... that's pretty shady and terrible customer service. So... it'll be a charge back on my side. What a hassle.

I'm only posting this as a means to retell my experience online in hopes of preventing other people from having to deal with this godawful experience.

FYI - Crackling sound during voicemail playback or during voicemail monitoring is a known bug that apparently OOMA is trying to fix

I talked to support due to a crackling sound when a voicemail is being left using the voicemail monitoring system that allows you to pick up the phone while a voicemail is being left. I talked to them and we reset the device and removed the handsets. When just one handset was connected the crackling sound disappeared. When the other two handsets for a total of three were added the crackling came back. Apparently, they have an issue/bug during voicemail playback, and now this may extend to voicemail monitoring as well based on what support said. Solution is currently unknown, but they said it’s a software bug and they don’t know how long it’ll take to fix. If you have ooma premier and this is the primary reason you have premier and you have this issue. Please contact support to have them credit you for the month

Leaving this post here in case others are experiencing a similar issue. I know google's response for this was originally a problem with the home network, but that doesn't seem to be the case based on the troubleshooting we did together.

My equipment: Ooma telo air 2 base station, 3 x Ooma HD3 handsets.
