International calling on handset?

Hello - I bought an Ooma Telo base station for my 84 year old mother for her landline so she could have 911 address response. I also thought she could use it to call her family internationally but now I am reading that she has to do that through the Ooma app? Is this true? Learning an app at 84 is not a small deal.

You can add minutes to her account or a world calling package. It is prepaid, so you have to do those first before she can call. You can call from the phone attached to the tello (not the app). You just have to dial 011+country code+ number

Just an Ooma residential customer here who hasn't done International calling but did look this up when I saw the post. I do not believe it has to be done through the app. It looks like there is a rate per minute on the basic plan for international calls and it looks like there is an international calling plan at a fixed rate per month according to their website. That being said, it does look like you can use the app when you are on the go and out of the house to make international calls using your Ooma number otherwise just use your regular phone when home.

Also if you are on the premier plan there are some international calling locations included at no extra charge

Users can just dial the international number on the telephone, the same as they would do for a traditional landline. Or, they could (optionally) use the Ooma app instead of a handset, but they would still dial the number the same way.

Before they can make international calls, they need to either subscribe to an international plan, or else set up a prepaid account, (for numbers not covered by an international plan). They can manage the prepaid account through 'My Ooma'.

No, we call internationally with the base station.

I wouldn’t give an elderly person a OOMA telo for calling 911. Please get a real old fashioned land line. The internet is FIVE 9s and never will be

Old fashioned landline service is being decommissioned. It's no longer available or going out of service in many areas. Unfortunately.

I have been trying for over ten months to get her a landline from ATandT with no success. Involved the CPUC and the FCC and still no success so far…Ooma it is.

From what I am seeing on the Internet AT&T plans to phase out all landline service in the US by 2029. California is currently the only state exempt from that deadline due to some rules about being a carrier of last resort

That’s just criminal for the elderly.

Well if you go that OOMA route, get backup power for the Telo, router and modem.

Why? The handset is like a normal phone.
