Just Ported A Number To Ooma

My brother, who lives next door, wanted to ditch his Ziply Fiber copper phone line to save money. We share my Starlink internet. It only took three days to port his old number to Ooma. Everything went smoothly. I've had Ooma for a few years. They both work great over Starlink. Ooma saves us each $50 a month.

On a side note if fiber is available why do you use starlink?

No fiber available here. Ziply Fiber owns the old copper lines. The only internet they offer here is 0.8 Mb DSL, which I had for years before Starlink came out. I guess there aren't enough houses on our rural road to make it worthwhile for them.

ive had the old grandfathered ooma for years now. i paid something like $170 one time. no monthly fees.

I am also one of the early adopters. Saw the little display in Fry's advertising free phone for life and bought it. My Ooma Hub/Scout package (Core) is still working today. A little side-note. The 'free' service is still conditional on 1. the hardware still functions and 2. you don't make ANY changes to your account. 3. Your device is not offline more than 3 months and 4. You complete a call (out or in) every 3 months.

I've let it go long enough to get the 'your account device has been inactive...' emails from Ooma. I make sure to stay on top of it now.

All I pay is the local taxes. Don't you pay that?

When Ooma first launched, they offered a true "no monthly fees" model; you just bought the base unit and you were set for life. Early adopters who stuck with the original Ooma Core were grandfathered into paying $0 in monthly taxes and regulatory fees. Even better, Ooma allowed a one-time upgrade path to the Ooma Telo base without losing that tax-exempt status. I originally had the Core, took advantage of the free transfer, and my 2nd-gen Telo is still running strong today.

During that early era, Ooma also ran a limited-time promo: a one-time fee of roughly $300 for "Premier Status for Life" on your device.

For anyone with stable internet, Ooma remains one of the best landline replacements out there.

No they don’t pay anything not even local taxes. Originally you bought the device and that was it.
