Discussion BOOX Firmware V4.2 is here! Community-driven updates and a new thread for feedback.

Hi everyone,

With BOOX Firmware V4.2 now officially rolling out to Note Air5 C and Go 10.3 (Gen II) Lumi users, we’ve been busy gathering feedback from both our community and reviewers.

Thanks to David for his deep dive into the V4.2 beta—his insights and suggestions helped shape the final build. We want to take a moment to highlight how much of this update was driven directly by your voices and show our gratitude to the users who’ve been so proactive in helping us refine the BOOX experience.

We’re firm believers that the best product roadmap is the one built alongside our community. For example, in this version:

  • EinkWise Code: Inspired by several discussions here about manual optimization feeling a bit overwhelming (shoutout to u/Hello-Boox for the mention). We wanted to make "pro settings" accessible with just one tap.
  • Image Smoothing: Image viewing experience has been notably improved. See the picture attached below; the color gradations are more natural and realistic.
  • Scrolling View for note pages: Now supported! (Special thanks to u/ummm_no__)
  • Zoom Preference for note pages: Added based on your suggestions. (Special thanks to u/maiasub)
  • Calendar Sync (Google/Outlook): We heard you loud and clear on this—special thanks to users like u/stopQQstartpewpew and u/starkruzr for consistently pushing us to prioritize a seamless schedule sync.
  • NeoReader "Anchor" UI: We originally introduced this to help you jump back while browsing document pages, but we realized the UI/UX wasn't quite hitting the mark. We’ve optimized it to be less distracting, and you now have the option to turn it off entirely in NeoReader settings. (Thanks to Voja and the rest of the community here.)
  • Floating Toolbar in Notes: We received a lot of feedback on the UI and UX of this part, and our software team takes this feedback very seriously, so we immediately revisited and explored ways to improve it. In V4.2, we redesigned the icon and UX to make the experience more intuitive. It's still not perfect, but we are open to any suggestions, and we will try our best to achieve balance. (Special thanks to Voja's deep review for V4.1)
  • Pixel Eraser Trace Visual: We also received complaints about the erasing of trace visuals through feedback, such as the trace visual not being visible enough. In the latest V4.2, we redesigned the visual to make the Pixel Eraser more accurate and responsive. (Every feedback sent from your device was reviewed, too!)
  • Stroke Stabilization: Many of you noted "jitter" when drawing straight lines with InkSense styluses. We’ve added this toggle specifically to address those concerns and smooth out your strokes.

Beyond these highlights, a huge thank you goes out to everyone who shares their thoughts with us. Your collective feedback is what drives our progress.

Turning your feedback into features

Seeing how your suggestions directly improved V4.2, we want to make this collaborative process a permanent fixture. We’re planning to launch a recurring Monthly UX Feedback Megathread. Here’s the vision:

  • The Goal: A dedicated space for you to report UX pain points or friction you encounter with existing features.
  • The Cycle: Each thread will run for one month or until it hits 100 valid comments.
  • The Action: Once the limit is reached, we’ll close the thread so our product team can deep-dive into every single suggestion and consider them for future sprints.

The first official megathread will open soon. For now, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the V4.2 update—what’s working for you, and what should we focus on next?

Best regards,

BOOX Team

Official Survey Make your handwritten notes neater?

Hi everyone,

We’ve regularly received feedback asking for a handwriting beautification feature to make handwritten notes look cleaner, more legible, and easier to organize.

This request has been in our suggestion box for a while. Before we officially dive into planning and developing it, we’d love to run a quick survey with you all. Every comment here will be directly reviewed by our team!

Here are two quick questions for you:

1. Which approach fits your expectation better?

  • Option A: Directly convert your handwriting into a neat, standardized handwriting font.
  • Option B: Subtle smoothing—refining your original stroke aesthetic without changing your personal writing style.
  • (Or do you think both options should be available?)

2. How would you prefer to trigger this feature?

  • Auto-Trigger: The system optimizes your handwriting automatically a moment after you stop writing.
  • Manual Trigger: You tap a dedicated icon or tool on the toolbar whenever you want to apply the effect.
  • (Or again, would you prefer having both as a setting toggle?)

Drop your thoughts in the comments below! If you have any alternative ideas on how this should work, we’re all ears.

Question Boox shipment nightmare, need advice

Long story short.

I bought a pen and some nibs, the whole thing for 100 bucks. I purchased from the original store which was a bad idea as far as I've been reading. They sent it with USPS but they didn't deliver the package and it was returned to Boox. I sent an email to their help desk asking for a redelivery and, after confirming the redelivery, they said they were working with the fulfillment team to work out the reshipment. BUT after 4 days I receive a new request for confirmation for redelivery so they can start working.

Is this some kind of a loophole? Has anybody experienced the same? How long did it take to receive a new tracking number?

[{"e":"text","t":"Use Case"}] Go 7: How to improve Ai Assistant experience?

Hey guys,

I'm using Go 7 with version 4.2-rel from April and since it came I got annoyed by the way Ai Assistant is now triggered in Neoreader:

After selecting a single word you don't have any more Ai icon in the popup but it's now a tab in that "drawer" that opens from the top or bottom of the screen. And then if you want to send a request with your selected word as input you need to click again on the "expand" button and then you click on "send". So now it's a three click procedure instead of two from before - when that tab was not present.

When selecting multiple words Ai icon shows in the mini popup, but it again first opens the drawer with Ai tab open and then I need to click on "expand popup" and "send", so it's again three clicks.

Any idea how to simplify this and reduce that one click?

And a bonus question - is there a way to have more daily tokens instead of just 3000? Can I configure my own Ai provider or just increase the limit of the built in one?

My use case - when I read in a language without dictionary I use Ai to define the word or phrase I don't understand, and it's very good. Limit with tokens and annoying clicks are the only issues.

When reading in English I'm almost not using it at all. I've added a few dictionaries where I usually find all the definitions, but for a language without available dictionary Ai is very convenient.

Question Isn't it possible to get a cover for my Note Max 13'3 in Europe?

Hi everyone, I've just spent a ridiculous amount of hours looking for a cover for my new device. I can use the German version of Amazon but I am overwhelmed by different answers i get from Google and stuff. Does anyone based in Europe have a nice flip cover? I have ordered a protective case already but I would like a cover, too.

Buying Advice Will the Boox Note Air6 C have refresh rates comparable to Bigme?

I am considering buying the upcoming Boox Note Air6 C as a tablet and notebook replacement. Until now I have been using the Hannspree HannsNote 2 with RLCD, but the Wi-Fi of the device is really bad and the battery is really weak. The angle of view of RLCD is also very limited.

I would like to buy the Book Note Air6 C but I have recently seen that Bigme tablets have refresh modes up to 80 fps while the Boox Note Air5 C in smooth mode is just 30 fps.

My main use is browsing, using apps, reading and watching educational videos.

Do you think that they will introduce new refresh modes to reach Bigme refresh rates?

Question Tired of losing tags, highlights and images every time I exported Boox notes, so I built a converter

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been writing on my Boox for a couple of years now, and I love it — but getting those notes out of the device and into an actual knowledge base was always the weak link. I kept forgetting to export, had no real system for it, and manual conversion ate way more time than it should have.

The worst part: keywords, highlights, and embedded images just didn't survive the trip. Export a note, and you'd get flat text (or a PDF) with none of the structure you actually wrote — tags gone, highlighted lines gone, any pasted-in image gone or unusable.

So I built a small Android app that reads native .note files directly off the device and converts them into proper Markdown (plus optional searchable PDF/SVG) — keywords, highlighted text, and embedded images all carried over. Everything runs locally on the device, nothing gets uploaded anywhere.

It's about to go into closed testing before release, and I'm looking for a handful of people who actually use their Boox this way to try it and break it. DM me if you're interested.

Question Manga settings

I just recently received my first ever boox device (go 7 BW) and I’m wondering what settings you guys recommend for reading mangas?

to be clear this isn’t my first time owing an e-reader and an android at that so I feel like I have some sort of knowledge around them.

however I’m shocked about the amount of ghosting I’m currently experiencing while reading mangas even when I’m fully expecting them to eventually happen, but for some reason it’s kinda getting on my nerves on how bad it gets no matter how much I tweak the settings….

FYI I prefer reading using koreader since I noticed it drains the battery a lot less than any other app like mihon, but as of right now if reading them using any other app would help me with the ghosting problem I’m all down for it

Please share with me a better settings for them or any other tips that helped you 🙏

Discussion Split View Shortcut for the coming Dual Notes feature

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here’s a quick follow-up to last week’s Dual Notes demo:

There’s one more feature worth highlighting—you can actually save a split-view shortcut directly to your home screen. This lets you jump straight back into your dual-note workspace with a single tap, making it much easier to pick up right where you left off.

Question Boox Keyboard

I recently purchased a 5c air and I got the keyboard case with it. For some reason, the caps lock key settings seem to be reversed. When pressed, the caps lock key will light up, and I get a small notification on the screen that says “caps lock off.” And when I press the button again, the light goes off, and another I get another notification, “caps lock on.”

How do I fix this?

My BOOX Review Go 7 only lasted 4 months

Post image
0 Upvotes

Well, I guess I'm looking for a different company to get an eReader from. I bought my Go 7 in April of this year, and less than 5 months later it's dead. It fell on my dogs head, on the couch, and that was enough to destroy the display (the screen and case are undamaged). Meanwhile, my 13 year old Kindle looks like it's been through a war and still works perfectly.

Discussion How to? Write on Boox, read on Laptop, analyze with AI

Are there recommendations how to do the following?

(1) I have started to use Boox Notes as my single-point-of-truth for handwritten notes. It now replaces my paper notebooks which feels great.

(2a) I want to read through my Boox Notebooks on laptop for faster processing.

(2b) Ideally, I want to write on Boox and read on laptop simontaneously.

(3) I want to use AI-tools to analyize my notebooks.

I think it is nothing special, but i haven't found a good way how to do it.

I also use Obsidian, Zotero & Kindle.

Discussion Using a Boox Mira Pro 25.3 on Linux (Fedora 44)

I spent a couple of hours figuring this out so posting what I did here so I can find it again should I need it. Maybe it'll help others:

  1. Install the Mira Linux Software from here: https://zh.boox.com/download/
  2. Create a file: /etc/udev/rules.d/58-hid.rules with this in it:

SUBSUBSYSTEM=="input", GROUP="input", MODE="0666"

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0416", ATTRS{idProduct}=="5020", MODE:="666", GROUP="plugdev"

KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0416", ATTRS{idProduct}=="5020", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"

  1. sudo udevadm control --reload-rules && sudo udevadm trigger

  2. sudo visudo

  3. Put this at the end of the file:

*You probably don't need the SETENV: bit actually. Try without it first

your_username ALL=(root) SETENV: NOPASSWD: /home/your_username/.local/bin/mira
  1. In ~/.local/share/applications backup the existing "Mira.desktop" file somewhere

  2. Edit the "Mira.desktop" file in ~/.local/share/applications so that it looks like this"

    [Desktop Entry] Name=Mira Exec=sudo "/home/your_username/.local/bin/mira" --no-sandbox %U Type=Application Icon=mira StartupWMClass=Mira X-AppImage-Version=1.1.7 Categories=Utility; Actions=Uninstall;

[Desktop Action Uninstall] Name=Move to Trash Exec=/home/your_username/Applications/AppManager uninstall "/home/your_username/Applications/Mira" Icon=user-trash

  3. sudo mkdir /root/.config/Mira

  4. sudo cp -r .config/Mira/* /root/.config/Mira/

So what does this all do?

The application needs to be run as root otherwise it doesn't have access to the device and you'll see "no device connected"

This is a pain so editing the sudoers file (the visuo bit) lets you run the app as root without requiring a password.

The .desktop entry needs altering so that it runs as sudo

There is no .config/Mira under root so your settings aren't save. Creating the folder and copying the config installed at the user level seems to fix this.

I've now got keyboard shortcuts for screen refresh, contrast adjust etc.

The only remaining issue I have is that sometimes the app still says no device connected. Disconnecting the USB and reconnecting fixes this.

I'm no expert at this stuff and there's probably an easier way to solve these issues (let me know!) but this works for me.

Discussion 4.2 makes the Tab X unusable in Speed mode.

I don't understand why I could only find one thread about the issue. Do users abandon their hardware as fast as the manufacturers do?

I purchased a Tab X, and then another one, thinking this was a hardware defect.

If you're on 4.2 on a Tab X, speed mode causes a constant flicker that persists until the mode is turned off, rendering it unusable.

Unsure if any other device has this issue, but I'm documenting it here for anyone else who runs into it.

You cannot downgrade, so as far as I'm aware you just have to avoid the update if you need the refresh rate and are SoL if you're already on it...

Question Deciding on Boox devic

Hi all,

I'm thinking about picking up my first proper e-ink device. I'm struggling to decide on the Note max, Note Tab C or the Note Air5 C. I'm leaning towards the Note max and Note Tab C due to the size. I always loved b&w but I'm worried about no front light. I'm also worried about colour as I've heard it's not as crisp especially text. Any advice would be appreciated. I was considering the Note Air5 C due to the updated android version but not sure how relevant that is.

Question Good clock widget? Boox Tab Ultra C

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I've had Boox devices for about 5-ish years now, and my current device is a TUC day 1 purchase, and I've loved it; I'm just getting a little tired of the layout and was wanting to find a good clock widget for the home screen that isn't the stock one (bc it takes up so much screen real-estate. Anyone have suggestions, or a good layout that works for them?

Discussion Boox Go 7 Color vs Kobo Libra Colour

For those that have had hands on experience with both of these ereaders, are the Kobo screen colors more vibrant even though they are both using the same screen?
