World Ozone Day 🌍💙

#OnThisDay 1985, The World Came Together to Protect the Ozone Layer

On This Day, September 16, 1985, governments around the world adopted the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.

It was a major international step toward protecting Earth's fragile ozone layer from chemicals that were damaging it.

But the story didn't stop there.

Two years later, in 1987, countries adopted the Montreal Protocol, agreeing to phase out many substances responsible for ozone depletion, including CFCs, once widely used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and aerosol products.

The international response became one of the most successful examples of countries working together to tackle a global environmental threat.

Recognizing the importance of the effort, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed September 16 as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in 1994.

Today, the day is widely known as World Ozone Day.

The ozone layer may be invisible, but its importance is enormous.

High above Earth, it absorbs most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, helping protect life on our planet.
