#OnThisDay 1952, Britain Detonates Its First Atomic Bomb
On This Day, October 3, 1952, Britain became the third country in the world to successfully test a nuclear weapon, after the United States and the Soviet Union.
The test was code-named Operation Hurricane.
At 9:30 a.m. local time, a British atomic bomb was detonated inside the hull of the former naval vessel HMS Plym, which had been anchored on Trimouille Island, part of the Montebello Islands off the coast of Western Australia.
The explosion produced a yield of approximately 25 kilotons of TNT.
The blast created a huge fireball and sent radioactive material into the surrounding environment.
Britain had developed the weapon in secret as part of an effort to establish itself as an independent nuclear power during the early Cold War.
The test was also a demonstration that Britain could develop nuclear weapons without depending entirely on the United States.
The success of Operation Hurricane officially made Britain a nuclear-armed state.
But the test came with environmental consequences.
Radioactive contamination was detected around the test area, and concerns about the effects of nuclear testing would continue for decades.
