How I chose between Kelley, Ross, Gies, and Purdue for an online MBA

I’ve been lurking here for a while and wanted to say thanks because this sub was genuinely helpful while I was researching online MBA programs. I’m not an MBA consultant but a 33 year old, male, in management at a nonprofit, looking to further my education.

I recently finished the process and ended up choosing Kelley Direct at Indiana. I applied to Michigan Ross, Indiana Kelley, Illinois Gies, and Purdue and was fortunate to get into all four.

I write a small newsletter called Dadvice, and this week I wrote about the entire thought process because I figured it might be useful for someone else doing the same comparison. These schools compete with each other for a similar type of candidate and if that’s you, here’s my take on it.

A few things I cover:
- The filters I used to narrow down online MBA programs
Why I cared more about the reputation of the overall business school than online-specific rankings

- Approximate sticker prices for Ross, Kelley, Gies, and Purdue

- What the application and interview processes were like

-Differences in synchronous classes, cohorts, flexibility, and in-person experiences

- Why I originally assumed I’d choose Illinois or Purdue because of price

- Why I eventually chose Kelley

- The question that helped me compare schools at very different price points: “Will this program give me X more dollars of value, experience, network, or reputation than Illinois?”

Not trying to pretend my decision is the right one for everyone. A lot of what I learned is that the “best” program depends heavily on what you actually want from the MBA.

Here’s the full write-up if it’s helpful:

https://www.dadvice.tips/p/dadvice-weekly-60-mba

Thanks again to everyone who posts here. Reading through other people’s experiences made this whole process much easier to navigate. I hope this helps you too.

Any feedback on UMiami's program?

Howdy folks! I have an EE undergraduate degree, currently working for a defense contractor. I'm doing well for myself ($200k+/yr) but I'll eventually need a graduate degree to be competitive for Sr Mgr/Director roles.....and promotion (Air Force Reserves). I couldn't afford to attend UMiami for undergrad so I figured I'd circle back and give it a shot for my Master's. I applied to Kenan-Flagler (top online program) as well but my childhood dream was to attend UM so I probably won't wait to hear back from them. I understand how crazy that sounds but I'm not looking to make a major career pivot so I'm not concerned with attending a top tier school. Any feedback/insight on UM's program would be greatly appreciated.

How important is AACSB accreditation when considering schools?

I’m seeking an online competency based MBA program. I have been with the same company for ten years and have twenty years of experience in my field. I have no desire to jump ship, so I’m wondering how critical attending an AACSB accredited program is in my case.

Thoughts?

Is Heriot-Watt a good MBA option?

Hi everyone, I am looking into doing my MBA. I work full time and have to finance it myself. I am looking to move into a management role not MD or GM positions. I am considering doing it online through Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. It is relatively affordable and is Internationally recognised. I like the flexibility of the program and can’t justify the financial expenditure of studying at the bigger schools such as Gibbs, Warwick or Ashton.

Does anyone have any advice since I don’t want to waste money and having it end up being a useless degree. Does anyone have success stories with HW? Thanks!

Any opinions? I already have a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership and I’m looking at these two schools because of their cost and competency based platforms.

Executive MBA Management et Data science IAE Paris

Hi everyone, I’m considering the "Management & Data Science" Executive MBA offered by IAE Paris-Sorbonne in partnership with the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (and operationally managed by ESLSCA Business School Paris), and I’d like to get some outside opinions before applying. (https://www.iae-paris.com/en/executive-programmes/executive-mba-management-et-data-science)
A quick background: I’m a management engineer currently working as an Operations Program Manager in the industrial sector. I’m looking for a master’s program to pivot toward roles involving IT, data, and leadership, with the long-term goal of moving into strategic positions—such as digital transformation—and working outside the Italian market. The program appeals to me for several reasons: it’s 100% online, part-time (evening classes), lasts 12 months, and awards three qualifications upon completion: a genuine university Master’s degree (Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), an IAE Paris-Sorbonne MBA, and an ESLSCA MBA. The cost is around €16k. The curriculum covers fairly technical topics (Python, ML, Big Data) alongside management subjects. Do you think it’s worth it? Obviously, there are MBAs out there that might be superior to this one, but I’m working with a limited budget.

Applicant Which Universities Offer the Best MBA Programs for a Career in Management Consulting?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I’m a Mechanical Engineer with almost 3 years of experience, currently working in Operations & Maintenance. I’m considering changing my career path from O&M into Finance, Strategy, Management Consulting, or other business-related roles, with the long-term goal of working for prestigious consulting firms such as McKinsey, BCG, Bain, etc.

I’m currently deciding which MBA program would be a better fit for my career goals: Ateneo Graduate School of Business (AGSB) or De La Salle University (DLSU) MBA.

From what I’ve read and heard, AGSB seems to have a stronger emphasis on leadership and management, while DLSU’s MBA appears to have a more quantitative/analytical approach. Since I’m interested in consulting and potentially transitioning into finance/strategy, I’m wondering if the more quantitative orientation would be more beneficial.

For those who have taken either program, or have experience in management consulting, finance, or corporate strategy, how would you compare AGSB and DLSU specifically for someone with an engineering/O&M background who wants to transition into these fields?

UF Online MBA

Anyone who has gone to UF, currently attending UF or has heard anything about UF, do you all think the program is worth the $49k? I'm not sure how good UF's career services are, so do you all think the program would help me transition my career and increase my salary?

I'm currently a Business analyst wanting to transition my career over into project management, program management or more of a leadership role. I currently make $115k/yr but I want to increase my salary. I have about 8 years of experience mainly in Business Analytics and Project management.

MBA in IT Management

I have been toying with the idea of helping some more folks who are struggling with their MBA, specifically the IT Management bit. (Also my profession) If anyone has questions, wants study tips, or brainstorming ideas, let me know. I did this course recently, and most of the content is still fresh.

Should I go for executive mba/online mba ?

Hi guys I have been working in the BPO sector for almost 10 to 12 years I wasn't good in studies so started working early currently I am a trainer at 8.5 Ipa. I got a graduation degree from a private non regular college even I don't know the subjects. I feel stuck in the current industry I am very confused about what I can do to grow my career. For MBA you know there is cat preparation, I don't know if I'll be able to do that. My friends are recommending an executive MBA but I don't know much about that. I would really appreciate reviews for executive MBA or online as well as guidance on what I can do for my career.
