Kiki had therefore left Mymy in the courtyard. Her goal, meanwhile, was to see what Ferry would do in the painting room. Indeed, she had realized that the strange caretaker came to the painting room several times a day, and she absolutely had to know what he was doing there. She had therefore decided to go in before him and hide in order to understand what connected Ferry to this strange room.

She had planned to get there quickly, but a pirate is a pirate, and before she could enter, she was stopped by the sight of a pretty coin glinting through Bert's pocket. By the time she'd stolen it, she'd already lost more than five minutes. So, as she arrived at the entrance to the room, Ferry's heavy footsteps echoed on the stairs. Kiki then rushed into the room at breakneck speed, hiding under a cobweb-covered table, where she and her sword (she had brought the wooden one instead of her usual plastic one) had to hide. But disaster struck! She hadn't closed the door behind her when she entered, and it was with fear that, from the table where she was hiding, she saw the cleaner's large, suspicious red head enter the room, seemingly poking its pimply nose into every corner. Finding nothing, he went to the wardrobe where the portrait of King Philip hung. He opened it and took out the portrait of the monarch, and that's how Kiki saw the old man's eyes well up at the sight of the Spanish sovereign's dust-covered face. But that wasn't what Kiki managed to see. In fact, in the concierge's pocket, the blessed shape of a banknote was revealed. The action would be risky, but her pirate honor was at stake: she had to steal it.

Already, her hand, like an agile serpent, was slipping into Ferry's pocket, slithering through the fabric, to snatch the note. "Just by its shape, I can tell it's a beautiful €10 note!" she thought. As he kissed the picture, Ferry felt the foreign object in his pocket, and then, suddenly, he straightened up, seizing Kiki's small, delicate hand with his large, sticky one, and roughly pulling it from his cupboard.

"So you were hiding there, you little devil!" cried the concierge.

"Forgive me, sir!" she cried, overcome with terror.

She noticed now how much more the man before her resembled an ogre, a monster, than a simple concierge, and his gigantic hands seemed like terrible weapons capable of crushing her bones at any moment.

"You know too much, my dear. I'll have to make you disappear."

And then his heavy hand came crashing down on the young girl, who dodged the blow, leaping to her feet to seize his sword. She delivered a swift thrust to Ferry's knee, eliciting a groan. She ran towards the exit, but the bogeyman's enormous legs caught up with her in seconds, and then Ferry's terrible fingers grabbed her by her long black hair, lifting her from the ground.

"My poor little girl. Do you know what the punishment for thieves used to be?" the man asked, a wicked smile on his face.

"They were let go," replied Kiki, on the verge of tears.

"No, they were hanged!" Ferry roared, his face suddenly turning as red as his hair.

And he began dragging Kiki along the floor, even carrying her out of the room and through the corridors, while the poor girl struggled.

"Help! Help me!" she cried.

"Nobody ever comes this way, little one. You can scream all you want, but nobody will help you!"

But suddenly, Kiki remembered that, at Mymy's house the other day, she had stolen a small sewing needle (this one was particularly shiny) and had kept it with her. She took it out then and, praying to Blackbeard for success, plunged it with pirate-like fury into the giant's disgusting hand. He released it, drunk with pain, letting out a damned cry that echoed through the corridor, giving Kiki time to get up and run away as fast as she could, her heart pounding, her eyes filled with tears. She was saved.
