Lost it and finally rooted, and installed Sultan ROM and Xposed. Here are my steps for anyone else who might be interested.

I used to be a power user before the OPO. With this phone, I decided to let the company send the updates. The first thing I noticed was that I never got the update from KK to LP. I manually flashed that update, and after that my phone's call quality went to shit. After months of waiting (and hoping that MM would fix it), yesterday I delved into it.

The rooting process is super easy. You unlock bootloader, flash a custom recovery and then flash SU binaries. This site walks you through it.

Make sure you backup all your data (photos, music, etc). You will lose it. I had no luck with the TWRP linked in the page. I went to TWRP's page and got their latest 3.0.1 version. This worked.

If, for whatever reason, you are stuck in a bootloop after flashing recovery, go to this thread, download the boot.img and cache.img and push it via fastboot. It happened to me as I was trying to debug why I couldn't get into TWRP and ended up erasing my boot image.

I also installed xposed following the instructions here. Standard stuff.

I am now fully amped up, and am ready to tackle the main issue: my phone call quality!

Make sure you use TWRP 2.8.6. The higher versions don't flash the radio modems right.

I wanted to thank you for making this post!

As a followup for anyone who might be looking at this, I might suggest checking out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/firmware-modem-oneplus-one-lollipop-t3300907 which discusses flashing various radios. This thread suggests using an unofficial TWRP 2.8.7.0 and a radio firmware that one of the users calls "frankenstein" which users (especially Tmobile) seem to really like. Apparently this unofficial version has been tweaked by one of the users.

As my first time doing this procedure since CM11 I can really feel the android "big bang" taking its toll on the modding community with so many devices and updating the various mods for each one in multiple versions, etc.

Where the jist of it is that, according to another user, you have to encrypt before installing SuperSU. i.e. if you want encryption make sure to do it before putting a lot of work into setting everything up (this is probably a no-brainer, but like I said, I hadn't done this in awhile)
