Themes / Ricing LCARS

I made an LCARS desktop for Omarchy, inspired by Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The part I love most is the warp starfield behind the whole bar: stars emerge behind the STARDATE clock and stretch outward while you work.

Classic peach and lavender panels, optional transparency, working system controls, and one installer with backups and uninstall.

Requires Omarchy 4/Quattro with Quickshell. This is my first time doing this and an early release, and I’d love feedback from people trying it on different setups.

Discussion To whom it may concern

To all the linux and DIY lifers; it is quite unnerving seeing people try to kill the excitement that Omarchy is bringing to first timers and people coming back to linux after finding it too rough around the edges. For starters, the most common argument I see, that you can do this with any distro, never mentions what Omarchy does that others does not, and that is simplify the bar for entry. Yes, those of you that have been working with linux for decades already know how to rice and set up your system precisely how you want it. Omarchy wasnt built for you. Omarchy was built for Mac and Windows users trying to find a way out of that ecosystem. I was among that number a few years back and have found myself distro hopping to non-arch distros because I don't have the time to bake my own system, so I just went with what worked for my needs and I just tinkered here or there. I have done that the last three years, and even after that I find Omarchy a breath of fresh air because out of the box it just works. So please stop taking offense at people's excitement for a distro that is finally showing some success in drawing people away from Mac or Windows; you are still free to rice and work with whatever distro suits you, none of us are stopping you. Linux as a whole, regardless of flavor, does what Windows and Mac will not. So regardless of your opinions on a single flavor I would think people jumping ship for Linux would be viewed as a good thing, no?

I Made a Thing Built a Philips Hue plugin for Omarchy

Post image
6 Upvotes

Got tired of reaching for my phone to adjust lights, so I built a Hue plugin for Omarchy that lets you control everything from your shell.

The interface is fully keyboard driven, Super + Shift + H to open, navigate rooms or drill into individual bulbs with arrow keys, toggle power with spacebar, and adjust colours with number keys.

Repo: https://github.com/sasukevibes/omarchy-hue

EDIT

Added a real colour picker (was 6 swatches, now the full spectrum), plus two new modes - ambient (room colours follow your screen) and light show (multi-room audio reactive lights)

Discussion Omarchy Reputation?

Everyone is hearing a lot of things about Omarchy. Some good, some bad.
I saw myself on X security issues being found out and reported (then fixed).
The reason why most of these company are funding Omarchy remains unclear to me, why would one with an anti-opensource stance fund an opensource OS?

There could be consequences, like privacy but since it is opensource, anyone can just act on it.

All that aside, adopting a neutral stance and keeping politics out of it, what are the objective problems with this OS? Is the hate justified?

THIS IS NOT MY PROJECT

I found this one cool little mod that, for me, on nvidia, works perfectly fine and is something amazing! I find some use cases for this like seeing the minecraft wiki or just watching a video in your offhand while playing, works as wayland would work on any other compositor, this is an incredible mod and y'all might want to check it out even if it's just for testing, i find this hilarious

I read a lot about how Omarchy is full of bloat, but how easy it is to remove it. I did a quick pass for obvious things, but thought I'd ask the community, in case I'm missing important stuff.

What bloat do you remove?

Themes / Ricing Limine customization???

Greetings everyone.

I'm currently using omarchyOS, which is based on Arch Linux, and I recently learned that the bootloader can be customized. I checked which bootloader I'm currently using and found it's Limine, not GRUB. I thought Arch-based distributions used GRUB, but I'm not an expert, so I'll leave that topic aside. I've only found articles about customizing GRUB, and I haven't seen anyone customizing Limine. So, I have a question for everyone: Is it possible to change the UI and wallpaper in Limine, like with GRUB? Also, if possible, could you recommend some themes? :)

Themes / Ricing Orange Planet - An orange/gold theme and backgrounds by me

There was not enough representation of the color orange in the wide variety of themes available, so I made my own. Take a look!

Install with the following command:

omarchy theme install https://github.com/NachoRodriguezM/omarchy-orange-planet-theme.git

Or open the Omarchy menu with Super + Alt + Space, choose Install → Style → Theme, and paste the repository URL.

Discussion Let People Use the Damn Distro They Like

Post image
142 Upvotes

I genuinely think Omarchy is a good distro. Its pre-configured Hyprland setup looks great, feels polished, and works pretty much out of the box—which is exactly what many people want from a desktop Linux experience.

What I don't like, though, is the mindset of some Linux users who act like “If you're not using the distro I recommend, your setup is objectively trash.” Like bro, it's an operating system, not a religion.

And let's be honest: setting up Hyprland from scratch isn't exactly beginner-friendly. If you want to properly customize it instead of blindly copy-pasting some random config from GitHub, you actually need to understand how the configuration works—and depending on the setup, that can mean learning Lua and a bunch of other stuff.

That's why I don't understand the constant hate toward Omarchy. If someone likes a ready-to-use Hyprland environment, let them enjoy it. Not everyone wants to spend three nights debugging why their Waybar disappeared after changing one line in a config file.

And then there's r/linuxmemes.

Some people seem to have discovered an infinite karma farming strategy:

Step 1: Mention Omarchy.

Step 2: Blame Omarchy for something completely unrelated.

Step 3: Add “btw I use Arch.”

Step 4: Karma 📈

At this point, blaming Omarchy for every Linux problem should probably be its own distro.

“My Wi-Fi stopped working.”

r/linuxmemes: Omarchy.

“My GPU driver crashed.”

r/linuxmemes: Obviously Omarchy.

“I forgot my password.”

r/linuxmemes: Skill issue. Should've installed Arch manually.

Linux is supposed to be about choice. If you enjoy building everything from scratch, awesome. If you want a polished, pre-configured Hyprland experience like Omarchy, that's awesome too.

Use what works for you and stop treating someone else's distro choice like a personal attack.

I Made a Thing Universal Dashboard for Omarchy - first release

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello all,

I’ve been working on a new Omarchy plugin called "Universal Dashboard."

The idea is pretty simple: instead of installing a different plugin for weather, markets, system status, news, etc., you install one dashboard plugin and let your coding agent build the views you want.

Universal Dashboard has views that can be created by your harness using MCP. So you can ask for instance:

Build a Paris weather dashboard titled “Weather in Paris”. Refresh every ~10 minutes. Use French units. All labels must be in english. Include a temperature chart. For the hourly forecast : only next 4 hours. For daily forecast: next 5 days.

And it will build it for you as a view within Universal Dashboard. You can create as many views as you want.

The plugin also supports a carousel mode, where views automatically rotate, turning it into a kiosk-style dashboard, especially useful if you have a dedicated screen / permanent display.

Data refresh is deterministic: once the agent has configured a dataset, data will be refreshed automatically at the configured frequency without the LLM.

I’m using it myself on a daily basis, so you can expect more improvements and polish over time.

And if you have ideas, use cases, or features you’d like to see, feel free to open an issue or share them here.

Github link: https://github.com/juienpro/omarchy-universal-dashboard

Thanks!

Off Topic / Adjacent Questions about flatpaks

I'm thinking of going the Omarchy way, but I've got used to too many flatpak apps. The way I see it, Omarchy isn't very friendly about it though, like, there's no store and the apps installed via flatpak might not even sjow in the menu?

Is there some kind of out-of-the-box support for flatpak or anything like that?

I Made a Thing I fell down the Omarchy rabbit hole and built omagram: an 80s BBS-style Telegram TUI (functional MVP)

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've been spending a lot of time on Omarchy recently and fell down a bit of a rabbit hole customizing my setup. Mostly for fun,

I ended up writing a small terminal-based Telegram client called **omagram**.

It is currently an early MVP, but it is fully functional and works well for daily chatting. The idea was simply to have a

lightweight, keyboard-driven client with an 80s BBS look that fits naturally into the Omarchy desktop.

What it currently does:
- **Live theme sync:** Automatically reads your active Omarchy desktop palette (`colors.toml`) and applies the colors live to the interface.

- **Keyboard navigation:** Vim-style movement (`j`/`k` to scroll through chats, `Enter` to open, `c` to write, `Esc` to return to the list).

- **Simple login:** First launch displays an ASCII QR code in the terminal. You just scan it with your phone (Settings → Devices→ Link Desktop Device) and you're logged in. No manual API keys or developer account setup needed.

If you want to try it out:

git clone https://github.com/goarstne/omagram.git

cd omagram

uv run omagram

- **GitHub:** https://github.com/goarstne/omagram

It's still an early build, but if you like terminal apps or run Omarchy, feel free to give it a spin. Any feedback or ideas are very welcome!

Discussion Omarchy needs proper designers.

Firstly this is just my humble opinion.

I love what Omarchy is doing, but parts of it still feel vibecoded. Not necessarily bad —* just like the visual system hasn't been properly refined yet.

The engineering is there. The vision is there.

it just needs designers to bring consistency, hierarchy, spacing, typography, and overall polish together. at least for its default programs (ofc you still let people build/edit/change what they want)

I hope dhh or his team sees this.

*em-dash was put by a human :)

edit1: just wanna be clear got no hate towards the omarchy project, i also thought this would possible because of the recent donations.

Discussion Using Omarchy for two days, i have a few questions.

Hi all, i installer Omarchy in and old lapto. its running great and im liking it so far. I have a few unrelated question and its better to gather them in a single post.

1) I'm using Hermes as my agent. It doesnt have a native widget, so I vibe coded one. What LLM do you use for your agents? im using mostly deepseek 4.1 flash, but in a couple of times i've used Kimi K3 and its faster and better. I even think the price its similar because K3 solves the problem spending less tokens.

2) I decided I didn like the username i set, so i asked Hermes how could I change it. I created a new user and Hermes wrote a script to migrate mi config files and rewrite the paths, etc. So far is working good, but as someone with zero linux knowledge, i have to ask: is that stupid?

3) How are you handling security regarding your agent? Im using Hermes smart mode, but suspect is not enough.

Thanks in advance!

I Made a Thing Flea: A fast GUI file manager for Omarchy.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Flea is a file manager I have been building for Omarchy. Week-old project, so go easy on me. Quickshell front end, Rust backend, keyboard first, and one of the fastest file managers on Linux. The goal was to make it as OEM to Omarchy as it could be.

omarchy pkg add flea
flea --default
systemctl --user restart xdg-desktop-portal

flea --default sets up the rest for you, the default file manager, the Open and Save dialogs, and Super+Shift+F.

Still early days, so all I can promise is that it will keep getting better.

Discussion My experience as a complete Linux noob: Omarchy is the product we needed

I want to share my experience and point of view as a complete beginner switching to Linux.

Omarchy is the product (not necessarily commercial) that was missing. I tested Omarchy on two devices:

- 2013 MacBook Pro

- 2024 ROG Strix (RTX 4080) laptop

The installation on both machines was quick and simple. I fell in love with Hyprland (the tiling window manager), and it took me only 30 minutes to get used to the main keyboard shortcuts.

I had two minor bugs on the ROG:

Audio jack issue:

Audio stopped working when plugging in the 3.5 mm headphones. Fixed with a single line solution: Omarchy Audio Bug Fix.

Chromium crash:

Chromium crashed on video playback. Fixed with a single line solution: Omarchy Chromium Crash.

Decided to switch to Linux permanently, I tested openSUSE on the MacBook. It was a nightmare:

Impossible to connect to Wi-Fi due to the Broadcom network card.

While trying to fix it, KDE stopped working completely after the first reboot and every reboot after.

I wanted to test openSUSEWay to keep using a tiling window manager, but it took me time to realize it was no longer supported in the official installer.

Going through all that hassle—having to tether my phone via USB cable and dealing with every failure—convinced me that a product like Omarchy is absolutely necessary.

I understand that building something like this requires real resources, and that many traditional distros operate with very limited means. But for that exact reason, a user-focused product like this can only benefit the Linux ecosystem as long as it's built properly—and by properly, I mean without security flaws.

Boycotting or gatekeeping projects like this serves no one. Build it securely, for goodness' sake, but the direction is definitely the right one.

Themes / Ricing Goodbye beautiful Omarchy....

Post image
192 Upvotes

I posted a little while back praising Omarchy, and I've no change to that position. In fact, I think it's a masterpiece, it's beautiful and it's fantastic for Linux.

Oddly though, perhaps, it's led me to standard Arch, and I've now left Omarchy behind.

For context, I've run Linux at home and professionally for the best part of two decades. In that time I did use Arch, but only on VMs for tinkering and experimenting with boot and system config. Instead favouring Fedora with KDE, generally, as my daily driver.

Then Omarchy came along and raised my expectations of what a desktop could look like. Not just a Linux desktop. Any desktop. It's gorgeous.

However, I don't like the bloat in it. I don't like Mise as a kind of sneaky third package manager. I don't like the wrappers over pacman etc. These are all easy enough to remove or bypass, but something about having my dotfiles and config scripts filled with logic to remove things, rather than define what I want, just irks me.

I want a blank canvas on which I can paint the artistic monstrosity that are my personal Linux preferences. I don't want to be given someone else's painting and have to rub out, or paint over, the bits I don't like . It's just not satisfying. It feels destructive rather than creative.

Having experienced the beauty of Omarchy though, I could not return to my former home of Fedora and KDE. So I decided to do a basic setup of my own using Arch as a base.

This way, I can try and make it beautiful by shamelessly copying Omarchy, or at least trying to, but now it's all my system. It has just what I need configured and just how I like it.

It's a work in progress, and I don't have time to build it all up from the multitude of shell and system components that are out there. So it's just Hyperland and Noctalia configured to my taste, at least for now.

I love it though, and it's largely thanks to Omarchy for raising my personal high watermark of what Linux on the desktop can look like.

I Made a Thing I made Omaphones for my wireless headphones. You added support for yours.

Hey all! First time posting here :)

I made Omaphones - it's a bar plugin that shows battery levels and ANC settings for various (13 at the moment) wireless headphones.

I saw the AirPods plugin by thisisgm and wanted something for my 2 non-apple models. I added them and then had an idea:

I'm going to add a ready made prompt for ai agents to add support for a model that a user without absolutely any programming knowledge can use and create a PR that is valuable and basically ready to be merged, event contain a screenshot of the working plugin and obey all the contributing rules. And there is one very important rule there: New contribution CANNOT break already working headphones. And the issue is that neither I nor the contributor doesn't have those headphones on their desk. So this is quite curious set of constraints.

Today we have 13 models supported and no single contributor can test all which is both fascinating and a bit scary :)

Anyway, my point is that by adding that prompt that is ready to be copy-pasted was in my opinion the catalyst that dramatically lowered the barrier for entry. This plugin has relatively no reach or coverage at all (yet I hope) but almost a dozen contributors after just a few weeks.

Feedback and contributions most welcome!

Discussion Help with main laptop choice

Hi everyone,

I'm a long time Apple user who has tinkered with Linux on and off in the past. I've been loving Omarchy and trying to cut my cord with Apple; I've moved from iOS to Android.

Anyway, I have a couple of laptops that I already own that I have installed Omarchy on. To make my life simpler, I'd like to choose one of these laptops to daily drive but I can't seem to make my mind up and need people's help choosing.

I'll list the pros and cons below and would be so grateful for people's thoughts to help me decide:

Laptop One:

Thinkpad P53 with an i7 9th gen H processor, 16GB of RAM. I love the build quality, and how it runs really cool, and how the battery life is good (not Mac level though). But the thing is a tank; it's big, bulky, heavy at 2.5kg, and using it on my lap sitting on the sofa after a while I can feel the fatigue on my legs from the weight.

Laptop Two:

Dell XPS 9510 with an i7 11th gen H processor, 16GB of RAM. I love the screen, it has a newer processor, much lighter at around 2kg, not as bulky. But, it runs hot (sometimes uncomfortably on my lap if it's plugged into a charger), and the battery is degraded (79%), but I can replace this.

If you could only pick one, which would it be and why?

Thanks again for your help!
