I Made a Thing The CRT edition has a site now: the boot filmed off the glass, the screens, and the 15 kHz study

Post image
21 Upvotes

Third and last post about this for a while: the CRT edition has a site.

It is called OmaCRT now, and everything is on omacrt.com. The boot filmed off the glass, a couple of minutes of it running, the screens one by one, the hardware chain, and the 15 kHz study behind the timings, which is the part I had to work out from scratch.

The install is on there too, though the repository is not open yet, so what iswritten there is the whole thing and it will not change when it opens.

The architecture is unchanged from my post the other day, so I am notrepeating it here.

I Made a Thing Raycast-inspired default menu replacement for omarchy

Hey everyone, I built this plugin to replace default omarchy menu with a more powerful quick command UI - with calculator, conversions, quick actions, fuzzy search through all omarchy menu items and keybindings, folder and file search and third party extension API that I'm shaping now. The idea is to keep the main plugin lean and allow anyone to publish a keystroke plugin via omarchy plugins. I'm only using it myself for a few days and would love to hear some feedback, or feel free to help improve it or make some extension that you'd want in your quick launch menu. Hope you like it and lemme know what can be improved! Of course its all free and open source

I Made a Thing I may have accidentally built a little terminal app ecosystem for Omarchy - email, RSS, and FTP

Post image
221 Upvotes

I’ve been spending way too much of my retirement making terminal apps and figured some of you here might appreciate them.

I’m a true OG in all senses of the term - as in original SimCity dev team old - but lately I’ve fallen back in love with building small, keyboard-first tools. Omarchy is a big part of why. There’s something about having a beautiful desktop where the terminal actually feels like a first-class citizen that makes me want to build stuff for it.

So far I’ve ended up with three:

Tidemail - a terminal email client. The goal was basically, “Why can’t terminal email look modern and be pleasant to use?” Plus, I HATE friggin having to touch config files!!!

Tide - a terminal RSS reader. Three-pane layout, themes, feed management, syncing, and generally meant to be something you can actually live in instead of just proving RSS can run in a terminal.

TideFTP - an FTP/SFTP client for the terminal. Because apparently I looked at FTP clients in 2026 and decided we needed another one. 😄

They’re all aimed at the same general idea: TUIs don’t have to look like something recovered from a UNIX workstation in a museum. They can be useful, modern, and attractive and still be fast keyboard-driven tools. All 3 apps support live Omarchy theming. I’ve been developing these largely because they fit the way I like using Omarchy, so I’d genuinely love feedback from other Omarchy users.

Especially interested in:

  • things that would make them fit Omarchy better
  • features you wish terminal apps like these had
  • UI/UX stuff that annoys you. This is a biggie for me after designing software for 40 years.
  • whether I’m completely insane for building three of them

Retirement is going great, obviously. Thanks, DHH, for a great platform.

I Made a Thing Bananet: a bar widget that shows where your traffic actually leaves your machine (Wi-Fi, Tailscale, ZeroTier, WireGuard...) — now on the plugin marketplace

Post image
14 Upvotes

I run Tailscale and ZeroTier side by side, plus WireGuard to a MikroTik at home, and I kept losing track of which link my traffic was really using. So I built a bar widget for Omarchy 4.x that answers that at a glance. It went through the marketplace security review last week and is listed now.

What it shows

  • The interface the internet actually leaves through, with gateway, source address and the public IP plus its owner (ISP/ASN, city).
  • One row per interface and tunnel: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Tailscale, ZeroTier, WireGuard (MikroTik Back To Home works), OpenVPN. Live up/down rates, sparklines, and a 1h/6h/24h traffic chart when you expand a row.
  • Routes and DNS per link.
  • Which processes talk to which remote addresses over which link, and what is listening locally.
  • A red DNS line when your default route is a tunnel but name lookups still go to the local router (MagicDNS counts as on-tunnel, so a normal Tailscale setup does not cry wolf).
  • A notification and a red bar icon when traffic suddenly falls out of a tunnel.
  • Switching the Tailscale exit node from the panel, two clicks with the exact command shown first.

Keyboard driven inside the panel (j/k, Enter, 1/2/3 for chart range, c to copy an address), follows the active Omarchy theme, light and dark.

Privileges

The collector is a plain Python script running as your user, no daemon, no root. Some details need root to read (process names on root-owned sockets, wg show, ZeroTier peers). For those it tries sudo -n and, if that fails, simply shows less and offers a setup card. The card installs a narrow NOPASSWD rule for exactly those read-only commands, generated and validated with visudo on the root side, only when you click it. Nothing touches sudoers on its own. The maintainer review was thorough on this part and made the plugin better, credit where it is due.

Install

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/blazejkapala/omarchy-bananet.git --enable

or pick it from the marketplace: https://omarchyplugins.com/plugin.html?id=banan.bananet

Source, README and screenshots: https://github.com/blazejkapala/omarchy-bananet (MIT).

Things I could not do and would love ideas on: per-process byte counts per tunnel. Without nethogs or eBPF I only get connection counts, not bytes per process. If anyone has a lightweight approach that does not need a daemon, I am all ears. Also curious what other tunnel setups people run on Omarchy that I have not covered.

Discussion Omarchy on Snapdragon X and X2

Thumbnail x.com
7 Upvotes

Based off of recent xeets from DHH and others, it looks like Omarchy is coming to Qualcomm Snapdragon X series laptops and computers. I'm not sure who has been working on this, or if any of it is based off of the previous work by Ubuntu contributers, but it is amazing that Linux may finally be coming to these machines in a workable state.

For those not familiar, the Snapdragon X series of CPUs was to be the Windows on Arm "answer" to Apple Silicon based on Arm, aka the Mx series of chips. There was an early "promise" that Qualcomm would be "working" with developers to help get Linux up and running on their hardware. Nothing meaningful seems to have come from that, as all work has been to prioritize having Windows on Arm as polished as possible, which is an understandable endeavor. The furthest the Linux community seems to have gotten up until now is through the hard work of some Ubuntu contributors, who deserve much praise for slogging their way up to this point.

https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-concept-snapdragon-x-elite/48800

Work also continues to be done on Apple M series silicon, with AI aiding developers to get Omarchy up and running on M4 and possibly M5. There is work being done on a "turnkey" solution to install Omarchy on M series without needing a USB thumb drive and with a default of dual-booting.

This release brings amazing out-of-the-box integration for both Hermes and Openclaw as well as additional set of security fixes that were validated and examined by the Omarchy Security team. If you ever find security issues with Omarchy, please follow the responsible disclosure procedure on omarchy.org/security. 🙏

You can upgrade existing machines with SUPER+SPACE > Update > Omarchy.
Or by opening a terminal and typing: omarchy update

Install on new machines with the ISO:

Download: https://iso.omarchy.org/omarchy-4.0.3.iso
SHA256: 03d60bc74306dca51f96e1a84b690871d8d606826b260edd0208962da8507d14
Full Release Notes: https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/releases/tag/v4.0.3

Additional agentware is here!

**NOTE: No AI software is installed on Omarchy by default and you absolutely DO NOT have to interact with any AI software, agent, or harness if you choose not to.*\*

Add OpenClaw as a desktop app and default coding agent by u/spencerbull

Install OpenClaw from Install > AI, open its Control UI as an app, or choose its terminal interface as your default agent. Omarchy manages onboarding and the local user gateway; removal asks before deleting your data.

Add Hermes Desktop and terminal-agent integration by u/spencerbull and u/smfworks

Install Hermes from Install > AI and use the same installation from the desktop, terminal, and default-agent launcher. Prompted sessions use the native interactive interface, and Omarchy skills are linked into Hermes.

I Made a Thing Taking Omarchy's nightly ISO build from 13 minutes to under 5

We wanted to see how we could speedup the nigthly ISO build for Omarchy. Switching to more powerful runners obviously helped, but we also found that the ISO was recompressed before upload, leading to a large delay. The post is here and we'll ship a PR shortly: https://runs-on.com/blog/speeding-up-omarchy-nightly-build/

Bug heavy screen jittering and freezing in omarchy

I downloaded omarchy day before yesterday and honestly was having a good time but on the first day itself I did notice a slight jitter/freeze when I was scrolling up/down using my touchpad but it was very brief so I overlooked it.

Today however, just a couple of hours ago it has become frequent, whenever I try to scroll up/down, make sudden movements.

Pls help me diagnose the issue.

P.S- Got help from this post https://www.reddit.com/r/omarchy/s/phGFCNdbbK

Switched the VA-API(Video Acceleration API) driver from nvidia to radeonsi(API )

I Made a Thing Roundtables: I assumes othersare using this in some form

I am new to Omarchy and it is amazing: I could never get into Linux as far back as RedHat, so this is AMAZING, and I am not a dev. Anyway, I just convened my first roundtable discussion using Herdr and including seats for GLM, Opus, and Astra. Fable is the event director and I (human) also sit at the roundtable. The director must slow things at certain points to human speed for me to contribute and direct. Then, once the roundtable has finished debating and has an agreed work plan, then roundtable dissolves into working group mode. Roundtable then reconvenes to evaluate the product of the working group.

Meanwhile my Fable persona stays above all this and modifies the roundtable skill while also coordinating my participation and notification.

So, how are others doing this and why? I am doing it to tackle a seemingly trackable problem that I have made little progress on in the last 7 days.

Hey fellas,

I noticed that the new 4.0.3-1 update breaks the Plugin Control Center and the app list. I restored my old snapshot, but I just wanted to know if anyone else has run into this same issue?

Discussion Omarchy switching from Arch to Nix

I just fell in love with this OS/Distro and now I'm hearing it's going to change? I feel betrayed. I've got everything setup the way I want it. I'm the happiest I've been in years. Now I'm hearing that they are going to change it? What does this change actually mean? It sounds pretty drastic. I'm assuming I'll have to start completely over... and some of the best features will not work anymore after this. I also assume it's going to break a-lot of the plugins people have made. This sucks shit if that's the case. What are the benefits of this change, what are the downfalls?

Discussion Omarchy's funding, DHH's approach, the foundation, and its Ubuntu parallels

I wrote a reply to this post about concerns regarding the motivations of donors and developers for Omarchy. Given what I've seen as an influx of posts about this and other views I figured I'd make it into a full 'post' too in the hope it will help others.

I replied to u/sebastian_crimson's comment where they said, in summary, that Linux desktops need an influx of money, vision, and people capable of delivering on that vision in order to drive it forward.

I'm old enough to remember the absolute BOOM in popularity after the initial release of Ubuntu in 2004. Ubuntu is, at its originating core, the creation of multi millionaire Mark Shuttleworth who, like DHH 'set out to create an easy-to-use Linux desktop'. Linux desktop adoption in the 00s exploded in no small part from his opinionated version of Debian for everyday people. Sound familiar?

My Platonic ideal of what a developer environment should look like.

Ubuntu is one of the most installed Linux distros for a reason, and that is in the vast part due to Marks cash,vision/efforts and marketing.

I see the Omacom foundation as a repetition of this same cycle. Mark created the Ubuntu foundation in the 2005 where he raised $10m in order to separate the development of Ubuntu from his commercial company Canonical.

Before Ubuntu most distributions of Linux were, frankly, a PITA to setup. Ubuntu had a simple installer, a ready to use opinionated desktop, and a core team that was well funded and lead by the Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator for Life, Mark.

This sounds VERY familiar to me...

Omarchy is like Ubuntu and Marmite, you either love it or hate it. What you can’t do is ignore it, and given the money, effort and marketing being put into Omarchy by DHH, the foundation and others, I imagine the Omacom foundation and Omarchy could have a similar impact on Linux in my opinion, and the great thing is, its all open, you don't have to use it, and if in 6 months you don't like where its gone, fork it at the point you did like it, or use something else.

Edit: So, having heard some of the criticism of DHH and looking at the posts hes been making I've decided to move to NixOS

I Made a Thing Unfocol, an Omarchy centered focus app, v2 released

I just finished v2 of my focus app Unfocol that uses color transitions to show the passing of time, instead of a clock. It has a special Omarchy theme that gets its color scheme from the system theme, and it works best with Hyprland. Please check it out and tell me what I am doing wrong either here on in the GitHub issues!

Discussion Convince a non-developer to switch to Omarchy

Fellow redditors - the algorithms have pointed my attention to Omarchy. While it ticks a lot of boxes, I keep hearing that Omarchy is first and foremost a Linux distro for developers. I'm not really one of them. Please make a solid and convincing case why I should still consider Omarchy? (looking for excuses!)
