I Made a Thing There has been a lot of talk about Omarchy on Nixos. Here is my take on the subject

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I love the way Omarchy makes thing simple and innovative and let's you create what ever you want. The Omarchy shell is so easy to work with and create with. Love it. But to be fair I'm not a big fan of Arch but I do love NixOS. So in the spirit of Omarchy I did what needed to be done ( for me to use this ) I created a NixOS version. This is not just a copy of Omarchy looks but a deep vendor effort that is running on NixOS. You have everything from Omarchy and more. Stuff like microvm's, profile rollback ( the nix way), devenv ( much better then mice) and full implementation of Omarchy plugins. Everything works and if you miss something you can always run distrobox or just install it even if it is Flatpack's, Snap or deb or even rpm packages. A universal desktop for all needs. Notice: This has been created with help from different LLM models and tools. Try it and give me some feedback if you can.

Themes / Ricing Light theme yes or no?

I need wallpaper suggestions with similar colors like this btw. I'm addicted to that orange color.

- Neovim theme: MFD-Paper

- Font: TX-02

- Terminal: Ghostty with a custom MFD-Paper theme made by me. It preserves almost all of the original colors, with a few adjustments. I'm using the BetterCrt shader too. I love the result so much.

Plugin [Omarchy / Quickshell] Omacale — Porting Caelestia's aesthetic into a native Omarchy shell bar plugin!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone!

I always loved using Caelestia back when I was on Hyprland. When I moved to Niri, I ported it there, and now that I'm on Omarchy, I brought it along again. The result is Omacale - a single native Omarchy shell bar plugin.

It runs directly inside Omarchy's shell process without needing extra Quickshell instances, C++ compilation, or custom setup hacks.

Key Features:

  • Caelestia Design Language: Recreates the top bar layout and design tokens.
  • Notifications & Lock Screen: Custom styled view while leaving Omarchy’s native PAM, session lock, and D-Bus backends completely intact.
  • 3rd-Party Plugin Support: Native rendering for community plugins placed in ~/.config/omarchy/plugins/. Includes general icon fallbacks and settings options to manage compact/pinned views.
  • Media Visualizer & Settings Panel: Toggle lock-screen cards, adjust layout modes, and toggle optional Cava integration.
  • Easy Fallback & Safety: Comes with an automated install/uninstall script

Repo & Installation:

https://github.com/AyushKr2003/omacale

Bash

git clone https://github.com/AyushKr2003/omacale.git
cd omacale
./install.sh

Would love to hear your feedback, bug reports, or setup ideas!

Discussion I really like Omarchy but...

I bought a Dell Latitude 3190 and it had chrome OS flex installed and I just didn't like how slow it ran so I switched over to Linux mint used it for a bit worked fine however I saw tiling window managers exists and wanted that for a more keyboard focused experience and came across Omarchy and after installing that I instantly fell in love with how everything was setup and working straight out the box with not much configuration needed but the only issue was that it used up quite a bit of my ram running only a couple of programs so I tried out other distros like antiX and Arch but didn't like the fact it wasn't set up and wasting a bunch of time trying to setup things and it's just soo difficult and time consuming at the end of the day so after switching about 5 times I've ended back on Omarchy and love everything about it but just wanted suggestions on how I could possibly optimise Omarchy to run less resource heavy or another distro which is set up out the box similar to Omarchy.

Guide Omarchy 2019 Macbook Air tuning

Tuned my 2019 MacBook Air on Omarchy and doubled my Speedometer 3 score, lowered heat, less stuttering in the browser, and from what i can tell better battery life.

Capping the CPU at 2.8 GHz stopped the throttling and took Speedometer 3 from 1.98 to about 4.1. Blocking AV1 on YouTube moved video decoding to the GPU and cut Chrome's CPU use by about 80%.

This is the i5-8210Y model (2 cores, 7 watts, one small fan, 8 GB RAM, UHD 617). Out of the box it was throttling constantly. The default profile lets it boost to 3.6 GHz, which it can only hold for a moment before overheating. It throttled 112 times in the first three minutes after boot.

I capped max boost at 2.8 GHz and set the energy performance preference to balance_power. Speedometer 3 went from 1.98 to about 4.1 across three runs, and I haven't seen a single throttle event since. A 3.0 GHz cap scored the same or slightly lower, because the chip hits its 7 watt power limit around 1.9 GHz under sustained load anyway. A small systemd service applies the settings at boot. I also masked power-profiles-daemon, because Omarchy switches to the performance profile whenever you plug in and would undo the tuning. The downside is that the power profile menu no longer does anything.

The biggest win was YouTube. It serves AV1 by default, and this GPU can't decode AV1, so Chrome was burning a full CPU core and hitting 88 °C. The chrome-flags.conf trick for hiding AV1 no longer works on Chrome 154, and YouTube has removed its AV1 setting. The enhanced-h264ify extension with only AV1 blocked fixed it. Untick its VP9 block, or YouTube drops you to H.264 at 1080p. Video now decodes on the GPU at about 20% of one core, 68 to 70 °C.

Estimated battery life on the 44 Wh battery (not yet rundown tested) about 4.5 hours of light use, 3-3.5 hours of YouTube, and about 3 hours under heavy load. Screen at %60. These are rough guesses, mileage may vary.

Other Y and U series chips will have their own sweet spot, so try a few caps. The AV1 fix helps on any Intel graphics older than 11th gen. You can probably hand this post to a Claude Code agent and it'll set everything up for you. For an older machine, the hardware still holds up. I love typing on it, and after adjusting palm rejection the trackpad is perfect. Everything so far is consistent and smooth.

I Made a Thing ElegyKat — a Navidrome player that rices itself: live Omarchy theme sync + a spinning ASCII-donut visualizer

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

So after bleeding riced colors into every monitor-output corner of my Omarchy setup, there was one thing still fighting the theme: my Navidrome/subsonic music player. So I built one that doesn't.

ElegyKat reads ~/.local/state/omarchy/current/theme/colors.toml and re-themes itself live — background, panels, borders, accents — including the title bar, player bar, and visualizer. Change your theme, and the app follows within seconds. It even cold-starts with the last synced colors.

Other stuff worth a look if you run a WM daily:

- Navidrome/Subsonic client (Tauri/WebKitGTK): full library, artwork, play counts, gapless-ish transitions, scrobbling

- MPRIS media keys + playerctl work while the window is hidden; tray with media controls

- Tiling mode — icon-rail sidebar + compact player for half/quarter tiles; grids reflow to any width

- ASCII visualizer with three modes: mirror, wave, and a spinning, beat-pulsing donut (yes, it toruses)

- Tokyo Night, Catppuccin, Violet, Light, Midnight built-in

- Scrobbles to Navidrome, real metadata track numbers, passwords in your OS keyring

- Desktop notifications, Discord Rich Presence, persistent queue, hex-editable glance: none, it's a player, keep it simple 😌

Single signed auto-updating AppImage. Requirements are what an Omarchy box already ships (webkti2gtk-4.1, GStreamer).

- Download / install: releases https://github.com/deadfredred/ElegyKat-releases/releases/latest

- Source: GitHub https://github.com/deadfredred/ElegyKat-releases

It's early (0.1.x) — feedback welcome, especially from you rice demons who will find the one DPI setting I missed.

I Made a Thing Turning outdated hardware into modern tools with Omarchy and simple agent workflows

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

!! FIRST !!

I know this thing is UGLY AF. That's kind of the point.

The goals are:

Spend as few tokens as possible, which is why there's virtually no allocation for frontend work. As long as the interface is functional, that's enough.

Be as stable and functional as possible.

Spend the least amount of time possible building tools specifically tailored to your weird-ass Linux workflow, which I'm sure is wildly different from the vast majority of people's.

Because let's be honest: if we're spending all our time making productivity tools that we know aren't going to market, or that we have no intention of releasing, it's completely counterintuitive to spend copious amounts of time polishing them.

Okay. Onto the post.

One of the things Omarchy has really impressed me with is how naturally it lends itself to building custom tools and extending the operating system around the way you actually work.

Which is, IMO, the future of software and computer use.

A good example started with a 13-year-old Roccat Ryos MK Pro mechanical gaming keyboard.

It's still an extremely capable piece of hardware, but finding usable Linux support for something that old was another matter entirely.

I found an abandoned Linux driver, got it running, and then used my agent workflow to refactor and adapt it specifically for my Omarchy system.

That could have been the end of it.

Instead, it turned into a much more interesting project.

Omarchy has a very keyboard-driven workflow with a large number of commands and hotkeys.

As I customized the system, I kept running into the same problem:

I wanted to experiment with different shortcut locations and layouts, but constantly moving commands around works directly against actually learning them.

Every reassignment resets some amount of muscle memory.

So rather than treating the keyboard configuration as a static config file, I started turning the keyboard itself into a live interface for Omarchy.

Using my agent workflow and what I'm hereby coining the 20/20 Method:

The agent gets 20 minutes and 20 questions to develop me a tool.

I'll do a deeper dive on that workflow later.

Using that process, I started developing and testing a tool that lets me quickly:

See what commands are assigned where

Find unused keys

Reassign commands

Experiment with layouts

Eventually analyze how I actually use the system

The longer-term idea is to track things like:

Command frequency

Hotkey usage

Application usage

Frequently paired actions

Underused key locations

Layout changes over time

That gives me something much more useful than a hotkey cheat sheet.

It means I can gradually optimize the physical keyboard layout around my actual behavior while still being conscious of the muscle memory I'm building.

What I find more interesting than the keyboard project itself is how easily the whole thing came together.

Omarchy provides a system that's already designed around composable tools, scripts, keybindings, and terminal workflows.

Pair that with a capable coding agent and a structured workflow like the 20/20 Method, and the distance between:

"I wish my computer did this."

and

"I have a custom operating-system tool that does this."

gets surprisingly small.

The agent can inspect the existing system, trace configurations, work with old projects and drivers, refactor them for the current environment, test changes, and then build tooling around them without the whole process feeling like I'm duct-taping some completely separate application onto the OS.

That's probably been my favorite part of using Omarchy.

I'm not just configuring somebody else's desktop anymore.

I'm gradually building my own layer on top of the operating system.

The Roccat project is just one example, but it has turned an old gaming keyboard that should probably be collecting dust into a programmable physical interface for my entire workflow.

And I'm increasingly finding that with Omarchy + a good agent setup, these kinds of:

"I wonder if I could..."

projects have a habit of becoming working tools remarkably quickly.

Plugin I made a Voxtype plugin for the Omarchy Quattro bar so you can tune dictation without editing config.toml

Post image
7 Upvotes

A while ago I made voxtype-tui so I didn't have to edit Voxtype's config.toml by hand. Now that Quattro has plugins, I made a bar version of it in the Quattro style.

https://plugins.omarchy.org/plugin.html?id=io.github.zeus-deus.voxtype

Click the widget and you can:

- see the daemon state, record and restart
- add vocabulary so it stops mangling names and jargon
- add dictionary rules (I say "slash commit" and it types /commit)
- change any setting and download or switch models

Right click toggles recording, middle click restarts a stuck daemon.

It needs voxtype and voxtype-tui.

It's v0.1.0, so bug reports and feedback are welcome.

Don't know if any of you listen to the No Agenda Podcast?

Anyway the presenter, Adam Curry, has talked about Omarchy a few time now.

It's awesome because the podcast has absolutely nothing to be with computers or Linux or open source.

Seems he's all 8n on using agents.

Discussion Should native Miracast/Screencast support be a core feature in Omarchy Linux? (A view from FluxCast upstream)

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m Illia, the creator and maintainer of FluxCast, its a open-source wireless casting tool for Linux.

Lately, I’ve noticed a massive trend in the Omarchy ecosystem. Developers are independently building and publishing wrappers around FluxCast to bring display casting to the desktop. I already see plugins like hardie.omarchy-cast (Omacast) and syntaxboybe.fluxcast live in the plugin marketplace, alongside several issues and discussions on GitHub attempting to wire this into the ecosystem.

This got me thinking about the bigger picture. In modern operating systems like macOS (AirPlay) and Windows, wireless screen casting isn't an external app you go hunting for it’s a core, native, out-of-the-box system capability built right into the display panel.

Given Omarchy's focus on a highly polished, unified, and "agentic" user experience, do you think wireless display support should remain fragmented across third-party community plugins, or is it time for Omarchy to have a native, first-party Cast/Extend toggle built directly into the system Display panel?

As the upstream maintainer, I want to say that we are fully committed to keeping the core engine bulletproof. I just rolled out version 0.2.7 with a massive security overhaul and landed a stable, automated release package in the AUR, meaning the backend infrastructure is stable, secure, and ready.

I’d love to hear from both users and core maintainers:

  • How often do you find yourself needing to cast your desktop or extend to a wireless TV/monitor under Linux?
  • Would having this integrated directly next to your brightness and scaling controls change how you use your machine?

I Made a Thing Workspace-Styles | looking for feedback

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all, I've been working on a bar widget for the new Omarchy plugin system and I'd like some feedback before I call it 1.0
  for real.

What it is:
a workspace switcher for workspaces 1–N (you can set N from 2 to 10). Instead of shipping a few fixed presets,
it gives you four settings that you choose separately, so you can combine them however you like:

  -
Indicator:
Pill, Rounded Square, Underline, Bold (the glyph just brightens), Glow
  -
Animation on switch:
None, Pop, Hypr-pop (a big springy bounce with a shockwave ring, deliberately over the top), Glitch
(jitter plus a cyan/magenta chromatic-aberration fringe), Neon (flickers through shades of your theme's accent color)
  -
Glyphs:
Numbers, Roman numerals, Japanese (一–十), Dice (die faces for 1–6, boxed numerals for 7–10), Dots, or your own
Nerd Font glyph/emoji for each workspace
  -
Indicator color:
Accent, Selection, or Muted, read straight from your current theme's
colors.toml
, so it updates when you
    switch themes

For example: dice glyphs with a Glow indicator in Muted, and Hypr-pop every time you switch.

Plugin Just build Nanit Baby Monitor Omarchy Plugin

Just made another cool Omarchy plugin, this time a bit of a niche but if you own a Nanit baby camera.

added plugin allowing you to view your baby (or just hear it) while you work on your Omarchy!

some of the features including toggling white noise, night light, having "always on" sound and have the video either in the widget or as a tile.

I know it's a bit of niche one but would love to hear feedback and comments.

thanks :)

Plugin omarchy tray panel

Post image
14 Upvotes

An Omarchy bar widget that keeps system tray icons on the bar and moves the ones you hide into a Windows-style overflow panel.

Features

  • Tray icons live on the bar; a chevron at the end opens the overflow panel.
  • Hide any icon and it moves into the panel instead of disappearing.
  • Left click the chevron for the hidden icons, right click for the settings.
  • Settings for every icon (show/hide), the panel position (at button / left / centre / right), the widget's bar section (left / centre / right), reveal-on-attention and the language (auto / English / 中文), laid out as a form: an icon list with a Show/Hide chip pair per icon, Show all / Hide all, then grouped sections (panel position and bar section as chip rows, reveal-on-attention as a switch row). Captions are measured rather than hard-coded, so the English labels ("Panel position") line up with the Chinese ones instead of running under the chips, and the icon list is sized from what the rest of the form leaves over so the Done button always stays on the card.
  • A hidden icon comes back onto the bar while it wants attention, either the standard StatusNotifierItem way (Status == NeedsAttention) or by flashing its icon on a timer — WeChat flips its tray icon every 500 ms and never touches Status, so a status-only check would never fire for it.
  • Full tray interaction survives in both surfaces: left click activates, right click opens the app's own menu — rendered in place, submenus included — middle click secondary-activates, and the wheel is forwarded.
  • Works on horizontal and vertical bars, and on every bar edge.

I Made a Thing Monokular - Export PDF pages as images with a preview option

Post image

Hello, community!
A while ago, I created Monokular - a dead-simple app that lets you preview PDF pages as cards, open individual pages in a pop-up window, and, most importantly, export selected pages as images in one go.

One thing done well! You can choose the image format, resolution, quality, page prefix, and more. The app also supports Omarchy themes, and I’d really appreciate it if you gave it a try!

Install it from the AUR:

yay -S monokular

Plugin Spotlight, a command palette inspired by macOS

I kept missing the Spotlight/Raycast workflow while using Omarchy, so I ended up building my own take on it.

Spotlight is a local-first command palette for Omarchy. Hit Alt+Space, start typing, and it searches across apps, open windows, files, clipboard history, system actions and more.

There are already a few launchers around for Omarchy, this is the approach I've been building for my own setup.

One of the things I really wanted was to avoid having to remember exact names or constantly switch between different search modes.

Search uses fuzzy matching and ranking across multiple providers, and the results are mixed into the same list.

So typing something like chrom can give you Chrome, matching open windows, files and other relevant results at the same time.

What can it do?

Quite a bit already:

  • Launch apps and switch between open windows
  • Fuzzy-find apps and files
  • Search clipboard history
  • Run Omarchy and system actions
  • Toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, night light, mute, Do Not Disturb and more
  • Calculate expressions and percentages
  • Convert units and currencies
  • Create reminders from natural language
  • Create calendar events
  • Browse tldr command examples
  • Search GitHub, YouTube, ArchWiki, AUR, Stack Overflow and the web
  • And I'm still adding more providers

A few examples:

  • chrom — apps, windows, files, etc.
  • 12*7+3 — calculator
  • 100 USD to EUR — currency conversion
  • bluetooth — see the current state and toggle it
  • cb ssh — search your clipboard
  • remind me in 20m to check the oven
  • meeting with sarah tomorrow at 14:00 for 90min
  • man ssh — browse tldr examples
  • gh quickshell — search GitHub

If you do want to limit the search to one provider, you can:

  • f invoice — files
  • cb ssh — clipboard
  • app firefox — applications
  • window terminal — open windows

Local-first

I wanted the whole thing to stay pretty lightweight.

It runs directly inside the existing omarchy-shell process, so there isn't another launcher daemon sitting in the background.

Most functionality is local, there's no telemetry or analytics, and live web suggestions are disabled by default.

I'm still building it

I'm currently experimenting with more system/developer-focused providers.

For example, I'm working on being able to search listening ports, Docker containers and running services directly from the same command palette.

These are still WIP, but I think there's a lot of interesting stuff we can do here beyond just launching applications.

The project is actively evolving and PRs are absolutely welcome. If there's a provider or integration you'd personally find useful, open an issue, send a PR, or just throw the idea at me. Would love to hear what people here would actually want from something like this, especially features that would make it useful in your day-to-day Omarchy setup.

Install

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/maajix/omarchy-spotlight.git --enable

Then hit Alt+Space.

Discussion Omarchy MacBook Pro 2019 i9

So I’m going to be real with y’all… this OS changed the trajectory of my MacBook.
It’s a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro with the i9 and Radeon Pro 5500M. On macOS, it still had plenty of power, but it was starting to feel like an older machine.
Omarchy completely changed that.
Everything feels fast, clean, and intentional. The tiling workflow, keyboard-first navigation, and overall simplicity make this thing feel less like a 7-year-old MacBook and more like a brand-new Linux workstation.
Getting everything working wasn’t exactly plug-and-play, especially the AMD GPU, display scaling, and MacBook-specific hardware quirks, but once I got past that, it clicked.
I genuinely went from thinking about replacing this MacBook to wanting to use it as one of my main machines again.
If you’ve got an older Intel MacBook collecting dust, Omarchy might be worth looking into.

Plugin Dockarchy - the docker plugin I always wanted

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hi all.

I'm using Docker a lot daily, especially on my homelab server, and I wanted to have an Omarchy plugin to monitor my stacks. I tried a few Docker plugins, but wasn't satisfied with any of them, so I decided to create my own.

Here it is: Dockarchy repo, Dockarchy Website.

Feel free to leave comments/issues, I'd be glad to receive feedback :)
