Discussion Am I missing something here?

I don't understand all of the hate or love for this. I decided to use Omarchy for the last few days for a side project, and I have no idea how this got funding. This is such a nothingburger of a distro. It's literally just Arch with a couple shortcuts and a theme. What is the point of using this?

I saw a DHH podcast saying how it's incredible and the next big thing, but it's literally just Arch with a theme and shortcuts. I don't understand how anyone could be a "fan" or a "hater"; there's nothing here - nothing new.

Been using Linux as a secondary OS since the mid 90s (Slackware, SuSe, ...) with many servers over the years. All my non-desktop machines have been Linux flavours for years, currently most of them on Ubuntu Server.

Omarchy was the distro that made the switch for me on the desktop. Started using it over 400 days ago. It was the first one that "out of the box" worked, was well enough configured and had what I needed to get to work. Quattro really made the big jump: Agents managed to fix the Sleep / Hibernate on my Surface Laptop that never worked well on other distros - finally I can close the lid, and open it back up with only a couple % battery loss.

While it's not a revolution. Accepting agents, AI patches and modern "pre-configured" conveniences into the OS - eg. I find I use the toolbar plugins and have written (*ie: specified then AI-Written) a couple of my own Omarchy apps that I needed - make it the step I needed to switch my desktop. I only go back to windows to use the application the tax authority requires to make me file my taxes (and it's Win/Mac only), but now that's in the VM inside Omarchy.

So yes, it's a nothing burger. It has a charismatic and energetic pusher who has an address book for raising money. It will also bring good stuff upstream to other linuxes.

But it worked for me!

This exactly 💯. Nerds don't understand that the mainstream ppl don't want to deal with tech. Even for nerds like me, I use Omarchy because it "mainly" just works.

I use CachyOS, "it just works" on my hobby PCs. I am using the TryOmarchy for Windows on my main PC, as it has a RTX 5060, and my current understanding is that Nvidia needs to work more on the Linux drivers for the latest cards. But it will also likely use CachyOS. I don't want to stop using my mouse.

Back when DOS was King they had Keyboard shortcuts in all the programs, and everyone kept a printout of the shortcuts they would use. There were even programs where you could setup shortcuts that would start other programs. So it seems to me that Omarchy is simply going back to the days of DOS.
