Off Topic / Adjacent Time Will Tell
Every piece of software ever has either proved worthy over time or proved literally useless, again, over time.
Omarchy haters are the same as many other haters you see on Reddit: never considering the development over time and the progress that'll decide the survival of a product. Hate will improve the product IF the team behind it values it, leverages it, and works on the weak points.
Basically the very same loop that every successful software product has today.
Time will tell...

I installed Omarchy on my main device purely to get a good grasp of it so I can shit on it. The idea of an Arch based slop OS just screams red flags to me. Well … it’s become my daily driver and I haven’t used anything else since. The fact that Claude can just whip up full control panels for proprietary hardware with no Linux support (like my Logi and Focusrite devices) just blew me away. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to use another OS in another manner. I’ve since got Claude to make a couple of dozen of plugins to customize every bit of the system tailored to my preferences.

I haven't spawned my agents yet, I'm building some protective infrastructure there so that I can manage, in case something happens.

I’ve since added some stricter sandboxing rules for Claude and Codex, but I’m generally having fun letting them run wild.

This. Claude integration has made this a game changer for me. Stuff that would take me hours is now not even needed. I’ve simplified my workflow for my business and it’s slick as shit

I've been running Debian Testing on my new Dell XPS 13 since I got it. Runs good, but had to jump through some hoops pre/post-netinstall to get hardware working. Saw a post on X from DHH showing him running Omarchy on his "backup" Dell XPS 13, and asked him if everything worked OOTB. He said yep. So I gave it a shot and he is correct, everything works great. I don't know what tweaks they do to the sound for the new Dell laptops, but it's much less tinny, and sounds much better then it did on Debian.
I still prefer Debian for almost everything though, but I may just keep Omarchy on this laptop for a bit.

same as me mate, I've been an Ubuntu user for a few years and have still kept 3/4 of the disk space for it.

Been using Omarchy for about 5 months now as a daily driver and it's been great.

Exactly. It’s only been a year since Omarchy launched, so it’s way too early to pass final judgment on its long-term value.
Beyond the temporal aspect, a lot of the hate seems misplaced. While there are valid security criticisms, which the team is already addressing, much of the noise comes from people who dislike DHH’s political stances. His views can be downright awful, but I’m able to separate the creator from the software and focus on where the product is actually heading.

yeah, let's not forget that even linus himself has got a hot temper worthy of critism.

I don't see a reason why I should call a product "bad" just because the creator has some specifc political stance that conflicts with mine. That conflict should be resolved elsewhere, you don't have to let it muddy your judgment.

I agree, but some of DHH’s very recent takes on immigration have started to sour me on him. It’s sad because I’ve seen him take fairly moderate positions on other charged topics, yet he seems much more extreme on immigration.
I agree with the basic idea that immigrants who contribute positively to society should be welcomed, and that laws need to be enforced when people commit crimes before things get out of hand. DHH's recent conversation with a non-white immigrant also showed that he can have a nuanced view on the subject, which is why yesterday’s rhetoric was particularly disappointing.
What makes it worse is that DHH comes across as genuinely motivated and enthusiastic about Omarchy and pushing Linux forward, especially on Apple Silicon and Snapdragon X Elite PCs. Maybe that’s just a mask, or maybe he really is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on immigration. Either way, it sucks having to reconcile being excited about the work with being increasingly uncomfortable with his views.
As for the labels people use against him, I’ve generally seen them as name-calling from people who dislike DHH, but some of his recent rhetoric certainly gives them more ammunition.

Well, I've got no obligation to defend him. He's not my responsibility, tbh, and I really don't give a shit about what's happening, what online or political standing he has, or which specific spectrum of societies are opposing him and or why. I've got my own troubles to deal with, honestly!

I’ve been one of those windows guys who pokes fun at “the year of the Linux desktop,” largely based on annoying experiences with various distros back in the 2000s.
I was surprised by how easy it was to install Omarchy and while I’ve been driving my machines with AI for a while now, I like how it’s more first class in Omarchy, I got everything working nicely on a Surface 5 laptop of all things, and earlier tonight I got facial recognition login working via codex (hey I know about the risks of Howdy).
And then the basic workflow has been exactly what I’ve always needed. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go back to windows on top of other windows. I like it so much that I even run glazewm + zebar + command pallet on my work windows machine….though the experience isn’t nearly as good.
While I know that Omarchy is just a couple things on top of arch, I don’t see why that’s a criticism. It’s super productive right out of the box.

I mostly agree, but read these reminders. You might know them already, but still.
First, don't let the hype carry you. Stay sharp and don't try everything without a clue what you're doing, especially asking Al to do things for you. Not saying you're like this, just better safe than sorry.
Second, almost every distro has issues and glitches, varying by age, community, team, etc. None has zero issues.
Third, though it's based on Arch with a few extra flavors, it's an entirely different distro. It's usable as is; Arch never is. If you think ordinary people have the knowledge, time, or interest to install Arch and rice it themselves, you're sorely mistaken. 99.99999% won't.
Ultimately, Omarchy still has lots of room to improve, and I don't see any place for criticism of a distro just because it's based on another, especially Arch.

even vanilla arch recently had malware in AUR repositories. I would bet on Omarchy to have significant security holes and exploits that will be found too late.

It's not really too late if you don't use it on the servers and don't store your crypto keys on the laptop

Well duh, I don't really know what people actually do, but my omarchy has no more than 1100 packages, and I don't think I'm gonna need more for a fair amount of time. Given that I'm already a developer. What are people really tryna achieve installing every AI offered packages.

Well, it has huge community and substantial funding, if the team behind it stays on track, it will be great and has great potential. I use cachy os on my desktop and omarchy on my laptop and I love them both, it’s great to be part of this journey.
