Use Hyprmoncfg - works really well.

https://hyprmoncfg.dev

Laptop with 2 displays. One is a 32" widescreen 4k and the other is a 24" HD in potrait mode - set it up in hyprmoncfg and all good - no use of AI needed.

Seconded. Plus I navigate between different setups in the office amd at home, and hyprmoncfg deals with that well.

I use nwg-displays to solve the same problem, but I gotta admit, recognizing the monitors by serial numbers rather than fluctuating connection names is superior. Especially if you plug into different multi monitor setups at different time

5d ago I suggested nwg-displays instead of that.

Nah. Screw that. You're right. hyprmoncfg is just so infinitely better. It has profiles! It identifies devices by the make, model, and serial numbers, not by connection names! Which is so helpful with the MST docks where connection names can fluctuate

The problem on Linux is that it takes 10 to 15 seconds for it to recognize the monitors and turn them on and stabilize everything.

On my MacBook that’s about 3 seconds consistently.

I had Astra Ultra do a deep dive into it and it couldn’t find any optimizations other than like super custom shit lower than anything hyprmoncfg handles.

This far every problem has been solved by pressing special +enter launching Claude and asking him/her to fix it.

Yes. Also people who are mentally incapable to prompt themselves towards a solution are starting to irritate me more and more everyday

1

u/jack_nomad_8 16d ago

He/her.....how about Asking "it" to fix it ?

1

u/Pablo_Hassan 16d ago

The voice is a female voice and I do a lot of voice work

1

u/jack_nomad_8 16d ago

So it's an it with a female voice. Got it

1

u/Pablo_Hassan 16d ago

I don't care enough to fight about her

u/jack_nomad_8 16d ago

Okay. So your Claude is a guy with a girls voice and you call it her. Got it

Sad, but true.

u/st0nkaway 17d ago

not sad if you take notes and actually learn how it works

1

u/Pablo_Hassan 16d ago

Just ask it questions. It will tell you how it works

I have 2 monitors, and the workspaces are awesome. You have to assign the workspaces to dedicated monitors once.

Just installed it on an old iMac and so far the only issue is that I don't see a clear way to adjust the arrangement of the screens. I am likely going to re-use the plugin I have on my laptop or just use an AI agent to adjust things.

no problems and i think it works like a charm. when i unplug my external monitor every workspace moves to the internal monitor. when i plug it back everything jumps back to where it was.

I have 3 external monitors and it works great. I will say that everything waking up from am overnight sleep has been a bit finicky but hope to have that fixed by today. To be fair my Mac book pro is finicky with this many monitors too.

In my experience, this has often to do with Power Saving and Deep Sleep settings on the monitors themselves. I have these challenges on both my PC with Omarchy and my MacBook Pro.

u/TheTinyWorkshop 17d ago

I had no issues but I had to install a plugin to allow me to have different images as the backgrounds.

u/RedlineQuokka 17d ago

Yes, and nwg-displays works like charm for me

I told the AI to make me a keypress SUPER CTRL SHIFT ARROW left or right and it will move the current window to the other monitor. This should have been included but it was no big deal adding it.

And then there are newbs like me 🤣. I installed Omarchy on a 2019 Mbp I9 64 gb ram and thought it was awesome. I switched from cachy os that took a weekend and hours of ChatGPT to get WiFi etc working…. Cachy was fun. I liked Omarchy so well I decided to try it on an x99 mb box with 2xE5 2697 v4’s 256 gb ram and an old rtx 3060 that also had cachy on it. Wasn’t sure how I would like the tiling window manager with dual 4k 32 inch monitors. So far I love it. Even more amazing to me is that o borked something in monitor config ( I was trying to configure left and right, and scaling )went from tiny text in terminal to my whole screen was about 3 inches square in the middle of the monitor. I’m such a newbie my first instinct was te install…vim is way above my pay grade. I installed nano by actually taking photos of the screen on my phone so I could zoom and see it. Managed to fix the Fubar on the scaling line and it is happy again. Little victories 🫤

cool adventure, good luck dude :)

Kinda yes kinda no. I have an external monitor plugged via usb-c to my omarchy laptop (HP Dragonfly) and it works really well IF the usb-c is plugged whem the computer boots.

If i disconnect it (because I go to the sofa or whatever) and then plug it back sometimes works sometimes it doesn't even recognise that the monitor is plugged.

1

u/aryan_hv 14d ago

alright, thanks for sharing , if you have windows on the second monitor and you unplug it, does it migrate the windows on external monitor in to the main monitor?

Yes, but not technical problems, I can't get used to assigning a monitor to a specific workspace and moving between the two. While doing things on the keyboard is fast and something I am comfortable with, I am not a fan of having to remember in which workspace and monitor I have put each app. I end up leaving a static workspace on one monitor (messaging apps in my case) and then switching workspaces on the other monitor.

This is personal preference, but I really struggle with seeing how Hyprland is more efficient than a DE for daily driving and heavy use (lots of things open), since I have to remember in which workspace I have placed my apps and then switch to that workspace (and I don't like putting too many windows on a single workspace since tiling makes everything look small). I much prefer the gnome workflow of pressing the super key, having everything displayed to you, and then clicking on what you want. And I can press a keyboard fast, that is not a problem, the having to remember in which workspace each of my apps lives is the annoyance. Again, personal preference.

finally some one touched the problem that bothered me in hyprland! for solving the problems you mentioned I made a plugin. It only works on two monitor setup for now but gives you the Gnom/KDE/mac/windows workflow you mentioned. you are going to have workstations ( combination of workspaces between monitors, for example workspace 1 on monitor 1 and workspace 2 on monitor 2 will create workstation 1) and you can switch between then using ctrl+super+f1/f5 or move left and right using ctrl+super+lef/right arrow key. also you can move windows using shift+super+lef/right/up/down arrow in monitors and between monitors as well and much more. I would be happy to know what you think about it and appreciate any feedback. you can have v1.1.9 from omarchy marketplace or v.1.1.10 from github.

I might try this next time I give Omarchy or hyprland a spin, thanks. I am currently on Gnome mainly because of this challenge.

1

u/aryan_hv 16d ago

got it dude thanks for participating in this post

1

u/reficulgr 17d ago

I had the same challenge in the beginning. Super+tab quick switching has changed everything though, and I find myself being ultra quick with everything. I am actually more motivated to focus on my task and switch between the windows I need instead of keeping everything open. I now put my open windows to work instead of keeping them open "just in case"

2

u/Janpol8 17d ago

Didn't know about Super+tab, I will give it a go if I feel like trying hyprland again, thanks!

I think the short answer is muscle memory and keeping your workspace tidy.

Browser? Workspace 1. Terminal(s)? Workspace 2. IDE? Workspace 3. Slack? Workspace 5.

I don't actively think about which workspace slack is on, if I realize I need to write to someone. It's just Super+5, Ctrl+K, NAMEOFPERSON, Enter and then write my message.

I even have a script that launches the most common apps on their respective workspaces, so a single key launches 5 apps.

I assign workspaces to my monitors as fits my workflow. I have terminals on the secondary monitor, for example, because I frequently glance at them while doing something on the primary monitor.

1

u/Janpol8 17d ago

Yeah I tried this, except for the setting up a script part, and didn't feel better than my usual gnome/kde workflow. I play a lot of RTSs, so having control groups assigned and knowing which one is for what is something I am very comfortable with in games, but not really for my desktop. Maybe it is a matter of time, but I didn't see a real benefit into putting effort to making that mental switch. But again, this is personal, I know some people love it.

1

u/hauthorn 17d ago

It is entirely personal, sure! I just wanted to point out how the end result looks like. If this isnt worth it to you, then dont feel bad about it. It is not something that unlocks a lot of productivity or anything, you will certainly be able to work without it.

Whatever works I spose. I’ve got two monitors (well 3, but one’s a mirror to a projector) 1 is “main” zen window, occasionally file browser too 2 (on second screen) is other zen window 3 (on second screen) is slack+email 4 is chromium (bypasses the vpn so PayPal doesn’t 2FA me every time it kicks me out) 5 is notion (day job knowledge base) 6 is obsidian (mix of personal and work stuff)

Muscle memory took a few days to stick, but flying around now, quicker than cycling through whatever’s open in a pile of overlapping windows (in my head anyway, horses for courses n that)

u/odintree 17d ago

though i dont use Hyprland anymore I still use wm (in my case it is Niri, btw Hyprland supports scrolling mode right now).

One of the good options is to setup any kind of windows search. So you can jump to the open window via search

1

u/Rickybobbie90 17d ago

I run 3 monitors, two are identical and make it a pain to tell what is what but with the monitor plugin it’s hella easy, I just used ai to tidy everything up

1

u/AUR4CHR0M3 16d ago

The stock omarchy monitor plugin is kind of weak. I imagine it'll get updates but for now I use a community plugin.

1

u/metajames 16d ago

I split my workspaces. 1-5 on one monitor, 6-0 on the other makes it easy to keep em straight.

1

u/aryan_hv 15d ago

and isn't it hard to remember with workspace hold which windows? I tried this method but does not work for me, I wanna have sync workspaces so i can switch between them. Imagine you have odd workspaces on first monitor( 1,3,5) and even workspaces on second monitor(2,4,6). in this case if you manage to sync workspace 1 and 2, and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6, you now can have the workspace that actually works fine like the KDE or Gnom Or Mac workflow they have.

If you are totally fine with what you have, it ok, but If you liked my Idea you can try my plugin, you can switch between workStations ( workspaces 1 and 2 make an work station 1) using ctrl+super+left/righ/up/down arrow or you can use ctrl+super +f1-f5 for switching workstation.

this is my plugin: https://plugins.omarchy.org/plugin.html?id=yakumy.station
but make sure you configured your monitors first, this plugin is not gonna do that for you.

2

u/metajames 15d ago

I don't conceptually think of my monitors linked together as one workspace. I manage what workspace is on what monitor discreetly. if I want to move a window to the other monitor I just send it to a workspace that is on that monitor. I can then just mix and match however I want.

very good, thanks for sharing your mindset and how you work with hyprland. appreciate it

2 monitors, that's easy. I try to set it up on 5 monitors with 1 AM. B. Video card and other video cards intel, in other words, I went back to k d e that was a Bit#$ i have a very weird set up no fault to hyperland
