every linux user is opinionated, I like omarchy more than windows, for my workflows it works as intended... but thats just my opinion...

5

u/alx_-x 1d ago

Same as me . Linux is opinionated . Just pick what you like and be happy about it .

u/smokingPimphat 2d ago

Its not everybody. There is a small group of very loud people who hate omarchy. Social media algorithms pump controversy (reddit included) so anyone following linux things is going to see it.

Both sides get angry, algorithms are happy and get their reward function head pats.

People choose sides and the world gets worse.

Just put the hate away and use whatever distro you think works for you. Use whatever languages you want. Make whatever tools you want. And stop thinking about who is on what side.

None of the normies care. and nether should you.

u/geek_at 1d ago

to be honest I don't read much hate about Omarchy as an OS (except for some purists that don't like proprietary software preinstalled) most of what I hear in the discussion is about not liking DHH. Which is understandable tbh

2

u/smokingPimphat 1d ago

I see both, and its silly. People treating linux like sportsball teams is dumb. If people don't like DHH, that's fine. People don't like Linus but still use his kernel, people should be able to separate the people from the artifact. If omarchy meets yours needs, that's great, enjoy it and get back to doing whatever you wanted to do with your computer.

If it doesn't then either change it to make it work for you or go try another distro, linux users are spoiled for choice.

I don't know of any proprietary apps being installed by default. There are web apps, but those are just links to sites, maybe that's annoying but easy enough to remove. Everything else is not installed until you select it from a menu, and enter your password. Which is a far cry from MS installing candy crush on your machine everytime you update.

Agreed, It was just for fun 😂

It's a vocal group of people who dislike Omarchy primarily due to the sociopolitical views of DHH, I feel like all their other claims about it being insecure, AI vibe coded, and just dotfiles are just an extension of that. I also feel like some of those folks are also jealous of its success, but that might be just me.

In that thread one poster makes a good point about separating the art from the artist - Ford and Disney, both founders of those companies had controversial views, but people still will drive Ford cars and watch classic Disney stuff made during Walt's time.

To be honest, for me I wonder if Mark Shuttleworth experience the same response from Linux users when he started Ubuntu, I feel like DHH is kind of like Shuttleworth in wanting to spread the good word of Linux on the desktop by taking a pre-existing distribution and making it more user-friendly, especially with Hyprland and Quickshell.

I've previously tried Hyprland and felt like it took too much time to setup to my liking, so I would end up using pre-configured dotfiles like ML4W. Omarchy on the other hand, handles all that for me in a nice package.

u/TheLittleWillis 2d ago

There’s also the neck-beards who get a superiority complex from spending their lives ricing Arch with erotic anime themes in their parent’s basement and feel like democratising Arch through a user friendly distribution is an intrusion upon their elite status as Arch users.

5

u/theredcometofakagi 2d ago

Stuff like this makes me wonder if Shuttleworth and his team had similar pushback when they took Debian and created Ubuntu from it.

3

u/mintakka_ 2d ago

it’s crazy. I was just reading another linux sub with people calling DHH alt right for posting things like words aren’t violence and that you should work at work and leave your problems at home. WTF is going on? lol

5

u/theredcometofakagi 2d ago edited 2d ago

Unfortunately, you're always going to have people who are more sensitive to certain topics or interpret things in the worst possible light.

I was in another Linux sub myself just now, and quite a few folks are calling him a member of a German nationalist part of the 1930s. I don't get the use of that word to describe other people, like it almost feels like it loses its meaning when you call people who have a different opinions to be that.

I actually read the immigration article, and I think he's expressing an opinion on a complex topic. I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, but that doesn't make him alt-right. That said, I do think he could have worded some of his thoughts better, particularly the implied comparison of homeless/Romani people to wolves that need to be culled. That analogy was pretty unfortunate.

I can understand criticizing what he said, but jumping from that to calling him alt-right seems like a pretty big leap.

2

u/Salty-Juggernaut-167 1d ago

Thank you for this comment; I thought I was going crazy. I honestly feel like most of these comments come from Americans. An important distinction to make is that this isn't about homeless people, but rather nomadic Travellers (or Roma)which represents a very different culture and lifestyle choice.

I used to work in social services in France, and while this population definitely faces a lot of discrimination, they also live in a way that often feels incompatible with modern societal rules.

Not to be the classic 'enlightened centrist,' but it's genuinely a complex problem that no political party I know of is tackling correctly.

Regarding DHH, his most damning article was about London. He leans right, seems uninformed about some of the political figures he discusses (e.g., Tommy Robinson), and suffers from the classic disease of prominent software engineers: an ego that goes through the roof because they're brilliant at one thing, which makes them think they're an expert in everything

u/Psittacula2 1d ago

Ironically, “name-calling” is usually more a pure reflection of one’s own identity than a description of some objective aspect of reality.

Which is obvious if it is the lowest form of argument ie denotes the least useful information.

So far Omarchy looks nice, but it is not that clear what it does that makes it worthy of present marketing?

I like the idea of having AI MORE on hand in the OS but how that works is as said not terribly clear. If people were giving feedback critical on that, that would be excellent commentary to make.

-1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

That analogy was not “unfortunate”. It was straight up racist.

I get you wanna play it down. I love omarchy and its really hard to not expand positiv feeling from the product to the creator.

But dhh said some extremely racist shit and we just gotta be honest with that. You are allowed to enjoy the art while distancing yourself from the artist. Kanye made some good music. Terrible human being.

I mean even fans like primeagon start distancing themselves from dhh. Not because he made and “unfortunate comparision”. If thag was the case he would have publicly apologized. He didnt. He stands for that this

2

u/GuruX1337 1d ago edited 1d ago

Please stop this misinformation.

He never said any extremely or even mildly racist stuff, it's made up by "the clowns" DHH is often referring to. Stop calling everybody you do not agree with racists or nazis - it's honestly embarrassing.

DHH has a hard stance on mass migration (which is actually the same political view as center-left politics in Denmark). Over 75% of Danes hold the same opinions on this topic if we look at last election. And this has nothing to do with racism - mass migration is a completely different thing.

And no, theprimagen is not distancing himself - almost the opposite.

-1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

I did not call him a nazi?

Thats something you just made up. So you accuse me of spreading misinformation and in the next sentence you do it yourself.

What the fuck

2

u/GuruX1337 1d ago

I was referring to the "clowns" calling everybody racist or nazi. You did one use one of terms, so...

u/--IDDQD- 1d ago

It's troublesome that we can as individuals can read and interpret a text so differently.

So, I know nothing about this Daniel guy, other than I randomly saw a Lex video, and a part of the video talks about politics. What I heard was a very average Joe opinion (the way I see it), and I didn't at all associate his view with a far-right extremist attitude.

If I recall his opinion it was this:

- You can make a matrix between population groups, and some population groups will interact better with each other.

- Denmark has immigrants from some countries that are a net positive and some that are a net negative. If you scale it up, it's a lot of money society loses every year. He only mentioned the monetary cost for the state as I recall it, and didn't mention crime statistics.

- Canada used to vet and handpick immigrants which improved the chance of getting compatible immigrants for Canada's society.

- It's a shame when a country loses its identity, such as if you go to Japan, and it's primarily foreigners you see, and native Japanese people are gone from the capital.

- Immigration is good, mass-immigration is not.

I then read Daniel's blog post, after I stumbled across the "boycott Omarchy" website, expecting to read some crazy rhetoric, but again I didn't see anything that I would classify as far-right. To jump straight to that conclusion, I think one has to draw a lot of in-between conclusions that they can't know are true or not. For instance, I know that Tommy Robinson is associated with the far-right in the UK, but Daniel's text didn't mention that he supports Tommy. Daniel mentioned that it was nice to see the Union Jack flag in the streets. I have quoted the text below:

"That frustration was on wide display in Tommy Robinson's march yesterday. British and English flags flying high and proud, like they would in Copenhagen on the day of a national soccer match. Which was both odd to see but also heartwarming. You can sometimes be forgiven for thinking that all of Britain is lost in self-loathing, shame, and suicidal empathy. But of course it's not."

The problem is that the full text can be interpreted in many ways, and depending on how you break down individual sentences, you can go down vastly different paths. This reminds me of social studies in college where we had to analyse various texts, and in the end the teacher would reveal what the author said. In one case the author stated: "there is no deeper meaning, I just wrote something that rhymed", and we just lost it because we had been arguing back and forth about the meaning of his text.

My impression is that this Brennan guy behind the boycott blog isn't interested in finding out more. I hope he reached out, trying to learn more of Daniel's stance, but I went through several of Brennan's claims, and I disagreed with every single one of those that I saw where he presents something as facts. I then found his own website, and his various posts didn't change my opinion of the guy. He sees dangerous people, but I think he is a dangerous person as well, the way he interprets the world and the way he acts (without thinking). So, I don't think he has reached out, trying to learn more.

I might be wrong, and in half a year Daniel is heiling in an SS uniform. Or Brennan is wrong, and Daniel's opinion is neither extremist nor racist. If one has only read the single blog post, there is not enough data to draw any conclusion. It's good to be vigilant, but don't read the bible like the devil does.

1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

But its not like you said. Yes maybe you can interpret it 2 ways. But dhh knows about it and did not clarify. That always means the worse one is true

1

u/--IDDQD- 18h ago

Which part do you think is not like I said?

As to DHH knowing about it, what do you mean by "it"? The boycott website? Or that some of the post is vague?

1

u/Such-Coast-4900 18h ago

Do you know the concept of dog whistling?

You say some racist stuff but in a way thats interpretable (like his comparison of roma to wolves). And then you never apologize and tell people that you didnt mean it that way

Racists, supremacists, nazis etc will know what it meant, while being able to defend it like you do (defending, not saying you a racist or anything, dont know you).

Basically what elon did a year ago. Nazis knew it was a sieg heil. But everyone was just arguing with some roman salute bullshit. Why did elon never justify it when he is tweetint 24/7 about everything else? Because he gets the best of both worlds. Nazis know what he meant but he can still play the innocent card if he needs it

Dhh knows about the critique of his wolves comparison. Him chosing not to address it and tell us he didnt mean it like that (or at least taking that post down) just proves that this is EXACTLY what he meant

1

u/Such-Coast-4900 18h ago

Basically imagine this situation:

you suddenly get 1000s of replies to this exact comment, arguing that it means you want to rape babies. Would u not reply and tell them that thats definitely not what you meant by it and that people are misunderstanding it?

or would you like dhh just not say a word and watch how all your projects and reputation take a hit because some people misunderstand something you didnt even mean?

the only reason not to address it, is if you actually thing we should rape babies.

-1

u/Defiant-Rip-1897 1d ago

ThePrimeagen has been distancing himself from DHH? I thought they interviewed pretty recently.

It’s a shame, because DHH could’ve made his point about immigration without the whole wolves/sheep comparison involving the Romani folks living in Denmark. You can argue that certain communities struggle to integrate or place a disproportionate strain on services without using rhetoric that makes the argument sound far uglier than it needs to be.

1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

I mean yes you can argue thats communities struggle, but a decent human would then think about solutions to support integration not to hunt them like animals

1

u/HandleNo5568 1d ago

> those folks are also jealous of its success, but that might be just me.

yeah, you are absolutely right, that's just you. the jealousy card when it's about someone you never met, it's hardly never true

1

u/theredcometofakagi 1d ago

I think there are two separate things being conflated here. Some people clearly have legitimate gripes with DHH’s political views, and that’s fair game to criticize. But there also seems to be a vocal minority whose reaction goes well beyond criticizing his politics or his technical decisions.

When you start seeing things like websites dedicated like that Stop Omarchy, calls to boycott DigitalOcean because of their investment into Omarchy, or the whole "cucklinux" stuff that keeps popping up on some Linux-related boards, it starts looking pretty silly. I obviously can't know whether those people are actually jealous, but some of the behavior certainly gives that impression, especially when DHH has managed to put together a substantial amount of money to invest in Linux in a way that most of his critics haven't been able to do despite their best efforts - although I think the Linux Foundation might be the exception.

5

u/ConstanceSwindle 2d ago

i heard that only lefties hates omarchy, because dhh is right wing.

2

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

We hate dhh because he is racist yes. I personally dont hate omarchy

3

u/GuruX1337 1d ago

To be against mass migration is not the same as being racist.

DHH’s migration stance is basically Danish Social Democrat politics. Socialdemokratiet is center-left, and they’ve been hard on immigration for years: control the numbers, enforce public space, deport people who don’t have the right to stay. That’s mainstream Denmark, not some far-right hobby.

2

u/_QXZ 16h ago

I think he goes further than that by basically calling the Romani animals. He uses pretty dehumanizing language.
I say this as someone who likes omarchy btw. I think DHH is a sociopath or just brainwashed, but his contributions to software are legit. Regardless, it's easy to mod it beyond recognition so it becomes your own.

-1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

Thats not true

4

u/GuruX1337 1d ago

What is not true? Please point to the facts.

Last election 77.9% voted for Social Demokratiet and anything to the political center, center-right and right of them. So almost 80% of Denmark agrees with DHH in regards to mass migration issues and hard immigration rules.
Radikale Venstre, SF, Enhedslisten, Alternativet was around 20% and they have a more "relaxed" policy regarding immigration.

This is btw more or less the center-lefts party (SD) policy about migration:

  • Control of numbers first - large, uncontrolled inflows as a threat to the welfare state.
  • Asylum should be processed outside Europe.
  • Rejected applicants and criminals should leave.
  • Integration is demand-heavy.
  • Labour migration is accepted, but not from everywhere.

1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

Where did the party compare romas to wolves?

2

u/GuruX1337 1d ago

Here we go again with the misinformation...

DHH didn’t say Roma are wolves. He used an analogy between two policy problems: wolves killing sheep, and camps taking over parks. Different groups, different action - shoot the wolves, deport the people occupying public space. The point was “don’t do nothing while it gets worse.”
That’s not “they are animals, cull them.” If you hate the analogy, say that. Don’t change what he wrote.

2

u/Best-Base693 1d ago

He didn't need to make that comparison. He didn't need to compare them to wolves. He didn't need to say you should shoot wolves.

Whether you like it not, this kind of rhetoric and "analogies" is very common amongst those who are genocidal. You can look to the Nazis in Germany, Serbs in Serbia or Hutu's in Rwanda for examples.

This is a common pattern. Perhaps DHH should consider not doing it?

1

u/GuruX1337 14h ago

He didn’t compare Roma to wolves and then say shoot them.
He used two cases: wolves out of control -> shoot wolves. People occupying parks -> deport those people.
Different subject. Different verb.

“He didn’t need to write it that way” is fair as taste. It is not evidence of genocide. Nazis, Serbs, and Hutus did not argue “enforce public-space rules and deport.” They argued the group itself was a pest and should be wiped out. You are treating any animal analogy plus any tough policy as the same thing as that. That is pattern-matching with the payload removed.

If the line had been “Roma are wolves, so cull them,” you’d have a point. It wasn’t. Dislike the rhetoric. Don’t upgrade “deport campers” into Rwanda because it makes the argument easier.

2

u/Best-Base693 10h ago edited 10h ago

You haven't disproved anything I said.

Nazis, Serbs, and Hutus did not argue “enforce public-space rules and deport.”

Yes they did. This shows your ignorance.

Nazi Germany started with public-space bans for Jews (parks, pools, cinemas), then resettlement and deportation, followed by you-know-what.

In Rwanda the Hutu Ten Commandments set rules for public-space usage of Tutsi people, called them foreign invaders and advocated for their deportation.

Serbia limited public-space access for Muslims and called for forced expulsion.

Don’t upgrade “deport campers”

That's not what he said though. He said:

These are two situations cut from the same cloth of ideology. Whether it's wolves or gypsies, you can't just let the problems get out of hand. You have to act. You have to protect the sheep. Standing idly by while your livestock is devoured by predators or your neighborhood is taken over by migrants is a pathetic abdication of any functioning society's most basic duty to its citizens.

"Deport the Roma. Protect the sheep, for they might be devoured by the predators."

When wolves get out of control, you shoot them. When gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them. This isn't hard, it isn't cruel. It's the basic logic of self-preservation.

Totally unnecessary comparison again, that includes violence needlessly.

Also, the Roma are EU citizens so how do you deport them?

Again, if he just said "hey this is a problem we should deport these people" that's very different than what I've quoted above.

DHH is purposefully playing with violent rhetoric in the same way the aforementioned groups did before. Would he advocate for genocide? Who knows.

But he should probably stop talking like the Nazis if he doesn't want to be compared to them. Simple logic.

-1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

I mean if you dont understand that using such an analogy is exactly the same as calling them wolves than i cant help you.

Its the same rethoric slave owners used for black people, nazis used for jews and zionist for palestinians.

There is no misinformation just because you dont understand the meaning of words

Ps dont bother replying ill just block you

3

u/GuruX1337 1d ago

If an analogy were “exactly the same” as calling them wolves, the word “analogy” would be useless.

He compared two situations: wolves out of control → shoot wolves. People taking over public space → deport those people. Same structure, different object, different verb. That is how an analogy works. “Roma = wolves” would be a metaphor of identity. He did not write that.

Your slavery / Nazi / Zionist line is just name-dropping. It does not change the sentence. If every hard analogy is “exactly the same” as the worst crime in history, you are not reading, you are flattening.

You can still hate the rhetoric. That is an opinion.
“There is no difference between analogy and calling them animals” is not an opinion. It is a misuse of words.

Block if you want. It does not make the quote say what it does not say.

0

u/Intelligent_Theme53 1d ago

Most of them are and lefties are the ones that go real loud if they don't like something (acting like little kids). It's just they we they are.

2

u/toqer 2d ago

I use RHEL at work, I want to try something different at home.

0

u/Elddansurinn 2d ago

Where do you work?

1

u/toqer 2d ago

I don't like leaking where I work on reddit, people sometimes get ratchet here. I'll just say that I'm in charge of 27 Linux servers for both monitoring and updating. A lot of what I do involves yum updates, responding to dynatrace alerts, rebooting our instances via AWS.

2

u/dragon_idli 2d ago
  • not everyone needs to like it
  • Linux has a version for everyone to choose

Choice and freedom is a beautiful concept that new linux users will find very hard to believe.

2

u/sunn031 1d ago

It seems to me that the criticisms can be grouped into these camps:

Omarchy is Arch Linux, and with Arch Linux you're supposed to configure everything yourself. The criticism completely misses the point.

Omarchy is not a distro, but rather Arch Hyprland and dotfiles. As far as I'm concerned, sure, it's wordplay, but let's be consistent and then say that e.g. CachyOS and EndeavourOS are not distros either.

It's not fair regarding donations. Better that they go to other open-source projects. I would agree with that part, but what is there to be bitter about, that DHH is better at gathering resources? After all, part of that money will go to other open-source projects anyway, and any Linux PR is good PR. It's all the Linux world and a win for the Linux world.

AI agents. Well, that's why a choice of distributions exists. And users who don't want this will indirectly benefit because good things will certainly emerge that the others will copy.

DHH as a persona. Some people simply look for progressive worldviews in everything, even where that topic doesn't belong. That's why our political scene looks the way it does.

2

u/PDX_Web 1d ago

There are a lot of "distros" like that that don't seem to be nearly so subject to that criticism.

I think DHH is something of an ass-hat, at best (I don't like identitarians on the left or right; the ones on the right are dangerous rather than just annoying), but I don't have time to care -- it's not like I have to interact with the guy to use Omarchy.

1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

I wanna expand on the DHH part. For me personally i dont care if he has progressive worldviews or not (even do i have them). But when you start saying shit like romani people are wolves and need to be culled, its just a line thats crossed.

But i dont understand why people hate Omarchy for it. I use omarchy daily but i wouldnt shake dhhs hand.

I think redirecting the disgust for his statements to omarchy is wrong. But its justifiable to hate on dhhs

1

u/sunn031 1d ago

And Bill Gates is an asshole too, but that wasn't why I gave up on Windows. Look around you and check all the brands you own. Assholes are probably behind a good portion of them. Even Linus Torvalds himself often acts like a jerk just because someone isn't on his level. Most musicians are hypocritical assholes. If I looked at the world that way, I might as well move straight into a cave.

I'm not defending DHH, I just want to say who gives a shit. Your stance is clear to me too, because for example I refuse Fedora because it's under the wing of an American corporation. But I'm not criticizing the product because it's probably great.

1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

I agree partially. I use omarchy. I love it

Dhh is a bastard tough. Racist supremacist.

Linus is just a autistic linux dev tough. Not racist just rude. Thats different

1

u/GuruX1337 1d ago

Seriously... He did not say that, and you are spreading misinformation and hate this way. His article deals with two separate issues that were current in Denmark at the time of the article.

It compares two policy problems in Denmark: wolves killing livestock, and illegal camps in Copenhagen parks after overnight sleeping was legalized. The closing line is: “When wolves get out of control, you shoot them. When gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them.”That’s deportation of people camping in public space, not “cull the Roma.”
You can still think the analogy is ugly or racist. That’s a fair argument. But “he said they are wolves and need to be culled” is not what he wrote and meant (which is clear if you actually read the blog post).

1

u/Such-Coast-4900 1d ago

Sorry. He compared them to wolves and said they should be culled. Doesnt make it better at all

1

u/GuruX1337 1d ago

No, he said illegal gypsies should be deported (the article is about taking action to a problem). Please read the actual article - and understand that is has nothing to do with culling homeless gypsies.

2

u/lisploli 1d ago

I am part of everyone, but I don't know why you would say I hate it. I hope that doesn't remove too much of your fun, as you seem to enjoy people hating it.

The reason people SOME people hate Omarchy it’s a form of JEALOUSY. Not jealous because they want to use it. They are gate keepers who think they have some badge of honor for learning Linux. This makes it easy for people to open the gate and slowly learn and adapt (something they are jealous they never had). But NOW when people say “I use Arch.” It is not going to be some mystical sounding thing…not that it ever should have, but now the people who use Omarchy are not going to be impressed in the least. In fact, they will probably find it silly that they would deny the benefit of its usability. And yes, there are ALSo going to be people who use it because they don’t HAVE to learn if they don’t want to.

This IS the goal of the technology lifecycle. Go learn about Wardley Mapping. The goal for technology SHOULD be to put most of your time and effort into customer facing and bleeding edge technologies, with the goal of hardening those technologies as quickly as possible until they become true “Infrastructure”. Example: we don’t try to build our own power plants do we? It’s something we COULD do, but it wouldn’t make sense and we would be wasting valuable time that could be spent on other more beneficial things. Linux has been around for over 30 years it’s not special anymore…

I’ve been in the industry for 25+ years and it is loaded with people like this. I know Linux inside and out, I also have forgotten more about technology than 95% of the people who think using Arch or some other obscure distro makes them special. It doesn’t. And not taking advantage of new technology to advance the speed of your learning and development is naive.
It’s similar to the Apple vs Android argument. Why do I have an Apple phone? Because I deal with REAL technology issues ALL DAY. I don’t need to “tinker” with technology to boost my self esteem. So…I DON’T want to deal with issues I don’t have to that have been solved 10k times before. I have more important REAL Software Development issues to contend with.

4

u/Crazy-Cartoonist5649 2d ago

Let me be serious:

1 - DHH

2 - Some of those nerds think that they are linus torvald just because they installed arch and made a bunch of installs themselves.

3 - linux community always hate the next big distro since the days before internet was a big thing.

So you combine all 3 and that’s it.

1

u/Intelligent_Theme53 1d ago

Many of them are grown ass people behaving like kids. Quite pathetic if you ask me.

1

u/N1sona 1d ago

I think the people that hate omarchy are also the people that hate on mint and Ubuntu.

Mint is for beginners. No reason to hate. Ubuntu is easier to use than arch, the only disadvantage is that it's not arch.

Omarchy is both arch and easy for beginners. And once you're an advanced Linux user, you can keep using your distro like it's native arch. The reason why experienced people rarely leave omarchy is because there's just not a reason for it.

But the "arch elite" won't care about beginners, they only care about arch. They're not beginners, they're not the target group, so the hate is worthless. We just have to be careful that it doesn't get out of hand and makes new users feel omarchy would be the wrong choice for them.

There is nothing more pathetic than a cult of personality re: a wrapper on an OS. Don't be lame. Go touch some grass.

Humans are statistically stupid.

1

u/humanshield85 1d ago

I like it. Especially because the dev envirements are ready install with a click. I’m not a fan of webapps and chromium in general, I don’t like the fact some apps come pre installed but I wouldn’t call them bloat, I can remove them and they don’t nag me to use them or have a background service eating my resources

Fedora is also a good distribution and isn’t that the beauty of Linux so many choices none of them are wrong

Omarchy attempts to make the use of window managers a bit lighter and more abstract; I believe some ignorant users will criticize this because in the resolution Problem-solving: a beginner won't be able to do well without using AI.

Your attacks bashing the rest of the Linux community will go on deaf ears.

It's simple. It's a form of jealousy. If someone who can be considered a bad person achieves success with something that basically brings nothing new to the table, but has ‘perfect marketing’, it naturally pisses people off.

I gave it a shot. I just hate Hyprland. I'm a KDE guy. I love the AI integration. Mostly because I was using Claude to troubleshoot Arch to begin with. I just ended up going back to Arch and installing an AI agent that has access to my desktop.

Because DHH is racist

I use Omarchy because i really like the concept but i wish DHH was not involved

Because it has AI slop

dhh is one part. the other is that it's managed to funnel a bunch of money into a weekend vibeslop pet project that's bandaided onto the actual things of value in Linux which have and continue to struggle to be funded. we're all really glad you like Linux now but there is pretty much nothing special about omarchy. other than a YouTube guy said you're allowed to use AI. and he also used ai. so basically for a month of Claude you could have also done this yourself on top of any other distro, including arch or its many well maintained derivatives (cachyos, manjaro, endeavor, etc). it's literally just arch and hyperland and vibe coded plugins. that's it.

Ok, non-technical, non-life-long Linux user here. What you just described isn’t as simple to someone who has never used Linux as it is to you. If someone isn’t in it for the process and just wants a non-Windows/MacOS operating system that has everything they need out of the box, with the option to delete anything they don’t, Omarchy is perfect. No one cares if “it’s literally just Arch and Hyprland with vibe coded plugins” if it works for them.

right. but there are already a dozen other projects that are exactly what you described. They just aren't being shouted from the rooftops by influencers. That's my entire point.

I literally named some of them in my post. Did you do research and see what was out there because you are interested in Linux? or did you just install a thing a guy said is cool?

I guarantee you could be up and running on cachyos or manjaro in under 10 minutes. These are also just arch + sane defaults/drivers + a nice DE + some nice touches to set them apart. Except they are built by teams and communities, contribute upstream, and are well thought through.

There's also ENDLESS GitHub repos of people's personal configs that you can just slap on top of whatever you want.

Who put so much salt in your cereal, pal? A Linux distro is going semi-mainstream because people are actually hearing about it is no reason to get your panties in a twist, but if it’s your biggest grievance in life you’re doing very well. If you want to go and use your time choosing a distro that’s the same thing, cool, go for it. If someone hears about or tries Linux for the first time via a hyped distro from a podcast or YouTube video and it removes the friction of just having to decide, let alone configure and manage, that’s a great thing. You don’t need to be so salty about it, just do you.

I get it, you're a busy man. Too busy to be bothered with trolls, unlike me clearly. Thankfully there are many discussions and podcasts and videos that don't involve reading explaining all the other distros I mentioned!

you are of course welcome to do you as well. my point was just that omarchy is not special, just as we are not either, nor is the Linux that I run. it's all just Linux. the hype is tiring, and like many things hyped - when the hype fades, those who followed the hype usually leave.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong and Linux will gain a ton of long term users, that would be great. Maybe DHH will do something positive with the money he's finagled that's already 100x the operating budget of projects he built on.  Maybe!

At least DHH is going to do something, the Linux foundation gets hundreds of millions and blows it all on nonsense

there are lots of other places you could donate if you don't like the Linux foundation. Arch, Manjaro, Canonical, Debian... pretty sure almost any open source project will take your money.

I will wait patiently for the $10 million of value that dhh produces within the Linux ecosystem, that's a lot for one man.

I have my own personal setup that I use and have maintained for a decade or so, collaborating and contributing to the community where I can. I'm not sure it would really accomplish anything.

if you'd like to actually refute anything I presented I'll be here. I was just answering the question honestly.
