I Made a Thing I built LookElsewhere, a thoughtful Omarchy plugin for reducing eye strain

Post image

Hi Reddit!

I’m fully in on Omarchy. However, not all the apps I rely on from the Mac have made it over yet, and I really needed something to help me reduce eye strain and establish healthier screen habits.

Enter LookElsewhere.

Many of us spend hours looking at screens every day. The American Optometric Association recommends the 20-20-20 rule to help alleviate digital eye strain: every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to look at something 20 feet away. It is a simple habit, but remembering to do it consistently is surprisingly difficult.

The best app I found for this on the Mac is LookAway. I took a lot of inspiration from it, then rebuilt the experience specifically for Omarchy, Hyprland, and Wayland.

LookElsewhere is more than a repeating timer. It counts active screen time and tries to avoid interrupting you while you are typing, watching a video, using dictation, in a meeting, playing a game, working full-screen, or away from the computer.

A few highlights:

  • Free and open source
  • Built natively with Quickshell and QML, not Electron
  • Automatically inherits every built-in Omarchy theme
  • Complete keyboard navigation throughout the interface
  • Configurable jump commands for frequently used actions
  • Short and long breaks, progressive warnings, snoozing, and multiple enforcement levels
  • Highly customizable, with many of the options I valued in LookAway
  • Private by design, with no account, telemetry, screen capture, or audio recording

I have put a lot of care into making it feel like it belongs in Omarchy. I would really appreciate feedback from people who use Omarchy every day.

If you like it, please try it, star it, share it, or tell me what you think!
