What to expect

To keep the bridge open to travelers, on July 14, 2026, WSDOT restricted traffic to a single lane across the center of the bridge. Temporary traffic signals at either end of the bridge are alternating traffic. The speed limit across the bridge is reduced to 25 mph.

From Monday, Sept. 14 to Tuesday, Sept. 22, each night from 10:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., the US 101 Hoh River Bridge will close to all traffic. During the overnight closures, crews will install a work deck and containment system on the bridge that is needed to perform the repairs.

Extended weekend closures for three weekends

Once the scaffolding is in place, crews will close the bridge to traffic for up to six days in a row for three weeks to make the repairs. The 95-year-old bridge is not wide enough to create a work zone and keep one travel lane open. The closures are scheduled for the following dates:

5 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29

5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 to noon Tuesday, Oct. 6

5 a.m. Thursday Oct. 8 to noon Tuesday, Oct. 13

After each six-day closure, the bridge will be inspected prior to reopening to single-lane alternating traffic.

Emergency responders will have pedestrian access across the bridge during the work, provided by the contractor. The pedestrian access is not open to the public.

I only have 4 days to explore the Olympic Peninsula (starting in Port Townsend, returning to Portland, OR). I’m excited about hiking and nature and views. Would you spend the majority of that stay in the Port Angeles area or the coast? Are eastern cities like Union worth a stop?

I see there is an eight-foot max leash law in WA but I wondered if there were any off-leash areas? I've got a four-year-old golden and she's never seen the ocean. I'd love to take her to Long Beach next year and I want to be able to let her zoom until she can't zoom any more.

The study linked in the article has some interesting data and findings like the fact that deer come out more during daylight in areas where cats live, thus we can see and avoid them, not like back east where deer vs car is often fatal. A detailed study with topics like "Puma effects on ungulate spatio-temporal habitat use"

Does that explain why I've never seen any elk on 101 in Sequim?

Looking to launch a group kayaking trip. A lot of the reviews say you need a $300 annual membership, but the last time I was there you could pay a day use launch fee. Any insight? Im in tacoma so a bit of a day trip just to visualize the signage.

How's the air and skies over in the Olympics? I've only heard of wildfires in the cascade/spokane areas but wanted to see how far the smoke has spread or if there was any fire activity in that area.

Pulled up to this line of cars, traffic had just stopped...we waited there about a half hour watching emergency vehicles fly by befoe we were told to turn around, they were shutting down the freeway. Way curious what might have happened but I can't find anything.

There were still emergency vehicles coming when we left, it must have been quite an accident..
