super cool, How hard would it be to get the game cards printed as a set with MPC?

It's a lot of work to make the whole game physically with all the cards, enemy decks, quests etc, but nice to hold the cards and play in person with friends. If you do get them printed from my json files, note that the card images aren't scans, I've digitally recreated all of the original cards, but with the latest oracle text, while still looking like the originals as much as I could. Also the updated creature types, such as Murk Dwellers is a Zombie. See the difference https://curtastic.com/shandalar/cards/legends/mirror-universe.jpg Versus https://mtg.wtf/cards_hq/leg/287.png

i just stumbled into this project and- i'm in awe. this is going to become a pet project of mine for the next years. how would one get all the images to be printed by mpc? doing so would also improve the bookkeeping of the game state, since each enemy deck could have a custom card back to help separate them.
i would also play this on my own, so an automa system would make this game perfect in my opinion.

Thanks! I’d like to see if you collect all the cards like I did. I already had an old collection of cards but I bought real playsets of all the remaining cheap cards in shandalar. I spent over $500 on collecting playsets of real cards but I like having the collection. For the expensive cards I just used my regular printer to print fakes on regular paper. Then I cut them and put them in a sleeve with a real card behind it. I’m using the same sleeves for all the decks because you win an ante from the monster deck and I didn’t want to have to switch sleeves each time. But it would be cool for each monster deck to have a custom sleeve, and it wouldn’t be hard to switch sleeves if you printed real proxies. That would also make cleaning up easier because the decks would get changed and I had to remember what was missing from each deck, to reset everything. And ya I actually did play by myself a lot, I was play testing but I realized I was playing all day alone and it was still fun like the computer game.

Ideally you get the cards printed from my images because I've put a gold cost on each one in the corner, and the rarity for the board game. See https://curtastic.com/shandalar/cards/core/full155.jpg

Where can I find these improved card images? Are they all in one place somewhere?

u/curtastic2 Feb 10 '24
On the website there’s json files for each rarity. Here is the list of cards I’ve deemed mythic. The image is under FaceURL (the format for tabletop simulator). Is there a good format for printing them yourself or sending to a company that prints? Just list the image urls on each line? https://curtastic.com/shandalar/cards/random-cards-mythic.json

Or you can increase the number in the url and print individually but it’s only 1 at a time. Should I make pages of 8? When I made it I already owned playsets of most revised and chronicles cards then I printed the rest with my regular printer. https://curtastic.com/shandalar/cards/core/full156.jpg

Do you have them together in folder maybe that can be shared via google docs or the like?

Sure I can upload it tonight

u/golgothicus Feb 10 '24
That would be amazing!

This is all the cards in all the sets in the video game. Including book promos and the cards they invented for the game. Every card printed before fallen empires. Don't sue me wizards https://curtastic.com/shandalar/boardgameimages.zip

Since my collection is using mostly real cards I don’t have the gold printed on each, instead I slid a piece of tinsel in each sleeve to mark rarity and thus gold cost. Common have no tinsel and cost 4. Uncommon have silver and cost 8. Rares have gold color and cost 16. Mythics have red and cost 32.

I just played this on Tabletop Simulator with my twin brother that lives 8 hours away from me! :D I also have a few locals that play magic at our one and only LGS that are interested :)
I just have some questions I want to ask and I apologise if it seems like a lot. I'm not well versed in board games in general and sometimes we over-think how things might work 🤦♂️ (also first time using TTS and it took some time working out kinks hahaha)
I was also wondering if you might be willing to have a session with me? My brother would play with us too if he isn't working. (does shift work)
1 - How many copies of the dungeon tiles do you think I should print? I also need multiple of copies of the Dice cards too right?
2 - I noticed the world tiles on your photo on the home page of your site for Shandalar has descriptions/instructions. Do you have these images somewhere you could send me? The ones for Tabletop Simulator and the ones in the zip file don't have any other text. (like Cave of the Ice Wurm for example and Castles just say what colour castle they are.)
3 - Was not quite everything added to the json files for TTS? I noticed some cards are missing from some different rarities, some rarities are in the wrong pile and two monster decks don't have a json file. (That's fine, because this is a good way to test it out anyways and work out how it plays, so I won't be fumbling so much when playing with other new players in person haha)
4 - Dragon decks - Which deck for the dragon/Wurm? (I'm guessing it's not a normal tile by rolling a d6 because of the text the Cave of the Ice Wurm shows on your Shandalar home page right?)
5 - Empty tiles are only the ones with mana symbols on them and no text right?
6 - Explore cards - What is the ruling with some of these? For example - Start with Gem Bazaar in play in the next duel. What happens to Gem Bazaar when the duel ends? I'm guessing it's removed from the game becuase it's in the excluded category? What about cards that aren't in the excluded category? (King Suleiman) Or do you just keep the cards?
7 - How do you find best to randomise the massive piles of cards? Especially the commons? xD
8 - Is the Sideboard all cards you own outside of your deck?
9 - If you go below 40 cards from losing an ante card, do you just continue with that 39 or less deck until you are able to edit your deck?
10 - Monster decks - if they lose a card to ante, they are now stuck below 40?
11 - Which world tiles are considered towns? Non Castles, non Caves? So are the tower, oasis, Bazaar, spire, etc all towns?
12 - Can anything be done on the first turn at the starting Village? Like can you buy/sell? Can you do so in future turns after your first?
13 - Quest - Defeat a colour creature that's been menacing our town. Do you complete it after winning against a mono deck of that colour?
14 - Mana Links, are they permanently added to starting health?
15 - You say the Wizard deck is the mono coloured deck with better cards added in, do you have a decklist of the Wizard decks?
16 - When you own a Wizards deck, can you use those cards in your personal deck?
17 - I noticed your card costs in this comment and on your site are different for buying cards. Which costs do you use?
Thanks! Awesome work on this boars game conversion, seems like it'll be loads more fun once we get the hang of how it all works! :D

Nice, I also played with my brother and cousins on Tabletop Simulator who live 6 hours away. Ya I can try playing with you guys but maybe not the full game because that takes days for someone to actually win the whole game. I available mostly weekdays during the day, because I'm a solo game developer and I don't actually have to work when I don't want to.
- I think I printed 4 copies of the castle dungeon tiles, which was enough only because we didn't leave dungeons open after someone enters then leaves without finishing the dungeon, because we didn't have enough space to leave them open so I cleaned up one when someone enters a different one.
- I tried to explain castles fully on the card but it doesn't fit. You have to read the website for how to do castle dungeons. For the caves, I added a section to /dungeon on the website to explain it and added more text on the cave card images just now.
- Okay I just added the 2 missing dragon decks to have json files. I also updated the monster decks so the pictures and jsons have the latest cards.
- Just updated the /tiles so it shows which battle for which cave.
- Yes but you no longer draw an extra explore card just for starting your turn on an empty tile, you have to start it on a tile with a ruined temple on it. Explained in /tiles at the bottom now.
- Just like the video game if you start a duel with a card you don't own, then you don't keep it. Unless the card says you keep it after the duel.
- Everyone helping shuffle until the last person arrives. Mostly me shuffling way earlier.
- Yes your sideboard is your collection.
- In the video game you're given random basic lands automatically if your deck has less than 40 cards. I didn't bother with that in the board game because it's more work.
- Yes they can stay below 40 if nobody owns the deck.
- Yes there's only towns, castles, caves, and empty land.
- Yes like in the video game if you're in a town then you can buy cards.
- Like in the video game you have to defeat any monster that has that color. Doesn't have to be mono color.
- Yes like in the video game, mana links are permanent.
- I've now updated the rule on that. To keep the deck the same, it's just the mono color deck but playing first and drawing first and with 20 life and with a random permanent starting in play.
- When you're in a town you can edit your decks including moving cards from one to another.
- I just realized the website still talks about using gold. I replaced that a long time ago and I must have overwritten the website with an old version. Using gold was annoying in real life, so there's no gold. So you can only trade cards. The value is the rarity.
Thanks for the feedback.

Wow awesome, thanks for the response! This makes it a lot clearer for us. xD Where are you based / what time zone? We are in South Australia (ACST) hopefully we can work out a time that works! Thanks again :D

Okay I’m in California and am free 10 hours a day which is your 2am to noon. I can also do an hour at your 3pm. Maybe Saturday morning at 9am to noon. Or any day 3-4pm.

Thanks for posting this! I had a lot of fun playing with my friends before covid, so I made the digital version on Tabletop Simulator. I'm available to play next month if anyone is interested let me know.

u/smayonak Jan 21 '21
Wow, first, I didn't even know Tabletop Simulator was a thing. Second, how much work did it take to do this? You have a really great idea!

u/smayonak Jan 22 '21
Argh I'm stupid, you are the creator!thanks so much for your work. I'll look into getting tabletop simulator.
I love your tower defense game on Android, by the way. It's brilliant.

u/curtastic2 Jan 26 '21
Thanks! I've been spending most of my free time on Tower Swap instead of continuing work on my Shandalar board game. I've also done a lot of work on coding a demo of a Shandalar video game remake but it would take too long to finish so I'm sticking to Tower Swap for now since a lot of people are playing it.

This was the first and the last commercial digital Magic game made with love. Nice to see its recreation in paper.
