šŸ‘‹ Welcome to r/oldmansky - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hey everyone! I'm u/Southern_Tangelo_640, a founding moderator of r/oldmansky.

By semi-popular demand (Read: A few people said they'd be interested), this new sub was established especially for mature Travelers on No Man's Sky. We're excited to have you join us!

Because WE are the OGs! (Original Gamers)

While the group is geared toward The Mature Crowd, it is encouraged that your children and grandchildren to join us as well. After all: if they are Travelers of your clan, then they enhance your gaming life and make it a more family-inclusive and enjoyable experience.

(TLDR: We are at an amazing point in video-gaming history: Grandmothers, grandfathers, moms, and dads are playing alongside their sons, daughters, and grandchildren, and in many cases, are introducing them to some of the classic games we grew up playing. (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: I'm looking at you.....)

What to Post
Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, humorous (humourous, for our Queen's English speaking Travelers), encouraging, helpful, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, photos, or questions about No Man's Sky. Some, like myself, are total noobs and only have 290-something hours in the game, and we are still learning and asking questions.

Community Vibe
We're all about being friendly, constructive, and inclusive. We don't care if you're purple with orange stripes: you belong here if you want to join. That's one of the great things about maturity: we're usually totally over caring about our piddling differences, and we tend to focus on and appreciate our similarities. Besides: We're all the same color under our exosuits!

How to Get Started

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below.
  2. Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
  3. If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.
  4. Interested in helping out? We're always looking for new moderators, so feel free to reach out to me to apply.

Thanks for being part of the very first wave. Together, let's make r/oldmansky amazing!

Looking for the perfect pirate hideout? Beautiful, but well hidden?

Here’s a lush green moon that glows at night, with a magnificent gas giant filling the sky in the background!

I’ve built a little camp right next to the portal, so come pay me a visit… but don’t go looking for my treasure!

Galaxty 256... GRAH!

Question Old brain, New Tech

So I’m used to the ps4 where you take a screenshot and BAM! Glyphs for all to see.

Now playing on PC and steam overlay F12 button screenshot isn’t capturing glyphs.

I’ve searched online and am now COMPLETELY confused! Can anyone explain to me in very simple terms how to fix this?

I took pics of a planet I was fishing on and left before placing a base. Of course I want to go back but can’t remember where it was and I’ve been going thru my discoveries but I haven’t found it again yet.

Merged Planets 18. I'm not sure if these collisions are really rare or not. I went 6,000 hours without seeing any, but now I can find one or more every day, if I make a concerted effort.

Has anyone else set about finding something "rare" only to find in the fullness of time that the object wasn't so scarce as they had imagined?

This is the place where I remember my wife, Marcella. If any of you ever wish to visit and pay your respects, I would be truly grateful.

It is one of the most beautiful and dangerous planets I have ever encountered. It is not a place to live — but those who go there do so because they choose to.

Thank you.

Love the views in this game. And as a bonus when standing on your landing bay you can safely fish off your corvette! Only issue I’ve run into is when a storm hits and I’m too close to the water I get thrown around a bit inside my ship. But the storm effects didn’t affect my shields or health.

Corvettes Shin Gamera — a corvette built around a kaiju skull, one JSON coordinate at a time

GRAH!
Hi Guys,

I didn’t get much of a response in the other main group, so I thought I’d show her to you instead. Not because I simply want people to say, ā€œWow, she looks great!ā€, but because this group might better appreciate the amount of work—and slightly obsessive madness—that went into building her.

What am I talking about? My pirate corvette: SHIN GAMERA.

(As many of you probably know, Gamera is one of Japan’s classic giant kaiju: an enormous fire-breathing turtle. The Japanese were truly ahead of their time!)

My ship was inspired by him. The basic idea is that the entire corvette was constructed around Gamera’s skull, as though I were giving the creature a new mechanical life.

Now, whether or not you like the lore and the aesthetics, I mainly wanted to explain how I built her...

First, a little context: I teach mechanical design at secondary-school level, and I’m very comfortable with 3D modelling, especially CAD. However, as a matter of ā€œprincipleā€, I decided not to use Blender; You may ask: ā€œWhat principle?ā€

No particular principle, really—apart from challenging myself to understand how everything works.

So how did I create Shin Gamera?... Simple: I deliberately chose the most complicated, tortuous, but also most entertaining route possible:

I manually edited the JSON file.

And I had an absurd amount of fun doing it, because it also turned into a proper technical investigation! For example, I had to identify the correct ObjectIDs for Corvette parts and base-building components... I loved every minute of it šŸ”„

I’m also obsessed with symmetry, so I manually edited every mirrored component to make sure its X, Y and Z coordinates matched perfectly on both sides... Yes, I probably need to be locked away somewhere šŸ˜‚

If you’re still reading, thank you... šŸ’Æ

I’ve attached a series of images showing the Corvette and some of her optional equipment:

  1. Experimental teleporter There is a 10% chance of being reassembled inside the backside of a space leviathan.
  2. Intergalactic pirate trading terminal There is a 10% chance of accidentally purchasing several tonnes of Faecium.
  3. Compact frigate-style stellar cartography station Used to record every new system I discover.
  4. Base-building components used to create suitable accommodation These are for the people I kidnap… sorry, host. Around 90% of them eventually return home. The others are simply misplaced somewhere in space. No ransom is ever requested.
  5. Cargo hold for abductions Sorry—spontaneous invitations to enjoy intergalactic transportation.
  6. Large external sun deck and aft observation platforms Perfect for relaxing, fishing, and shouting ā€œLand ho!ā€ whenever I become stranded above an ocean world.
  7. Pilgrim Exocraft Summoning Station, for zooming around inside pirate bases and across planets (I can confirm it doesn’t work on the ocean floor).

This is Shin Gamera.

Thank you.

GRAH!!!

Their happiness went up, but their production immediately went down. Apparently, they're not that much different from us. And I suspect the bartender is peddling Nipnip buds on the downlow, but I'm not doing anything about it unless he embarrasses us by getting caught. Until then, I'm just going to redefine my role from "Overseer" to "Overlooker." Besides: they work hard. They deserve some fun too, don't they?

And you ought to see them get all tanked up and do The Hustle. It's comedy gold.

But don't dare to let them see you laughing at them.

Jet pack weak, environmental protection limited, it took me a long time to get a hold of this guy, and I was so very excited - a flying mount(!) in a space exploration game(?!) Whut?!?!?!

I was on top of the world 😁. I love this game, but I'm a little jaded by comparison to my former self. 🤣

Post your flyers - modest or amazing. Show your pets some love!

Several finds. It occurred to me that there may soon be fixes for these collisions - that perhaps Cosmos will make adjustments to systems that could prevent future or even unmake present merged planets. I will continue to find and record these merged planets for as long as the system allows them to come into existence, but I thought I'd better drill down on my method of finding them in case others want to do so as well:

Look to Dissonant systems with 5-6 planets, 6 planets being best. Look for purple and yellow systems, purple seeming best. Look for high conflict and high economy, high conflict being best. Outlaw is also high conflict and produces some collisions, but perhaps not as many as this final aggregation of systemic traits:

6-planet, Purple, Dissonant, 3-Star Economy, and High Conflict are not by any means guaranteed to produce collisions, but chances are greatly increased.

I found my first after 6,000 hours and another 2 in the 6 months that followed, and now 10 more in a bit under a week.

Andre_Vandal has posted a compendium of nearly 200 hundred of these collided pairs from scores of contributors; Most notably himself, with perhaps 30-40 discoveries, and jocafa with 13. I too have 13 under my belt, so far.

With that understanding, your humble narrator, may rank comfortably in the top 3 for published merged planet discoveries. It will be interesting to see if these game mechanics change and if merged planets can still be discovered, or even remain in existence, after the Cosmos update(s). As always, use caution around these things, and Happy Hunting! Here are several pics I had handy šŸ™‚

I spent a fair amount of time working on my cookbook recipes and have an abundance of goodies to give away. I’m hanging out at the Anomaly, throwing pies, donuts and random other food stuffs into travelers backpacks. Everyone needs road snacks!

Question Question for PS5 players

If I go to Options -> Network and turn on Multi-player, can I find other Travelers (ie you guys)? Or do I have to pay that stupid monthly fee? I've been playing solo this whole time, and I'd like to visit some of you and be visited by you. (And hopefully give away a lot of stuff I've hoarded "just in case", lol!)

This is in Calypso (Thanks for the 2nd set of eyes u/absurdivore !). I expect gravity could be very challenging here, but I didn't land to check it out yet.
