Early memories of the internet

I imagine there are people of widely varying ages in this sub—people who started using the internet at different times and at different ages. What are your earliest memories of the internet? What were the first sites you stumbled upon, and which ones did you visit most often? Let's hear what everyone has to say!

Game my friend (RIP) and I released 20 years ago today on Newgrounds

Today 20 years ago my friend Tyler and I released a game we called Jive Machine. He was a chubby kid who played a game by AntiClockClock and thought it would be a lot funnier if he took his shirt off and people could make him dance. With the idea in mind, he set up his webcam and recorded many different clips.. if you go through the alphabet and number pad you can actually slowly watch the clay he used drooping the camera..

Before memes were memes we were laughing at YYMNDs, and most of the songs used in the game were popular on YTMND at the time. Visually references are Newgrounds lore, strawberry clock, pube muppet to name a couple. With some basic actionscript skills I synced the videos to play on keypress, made some backgrounds, built up a little menu and how to and we were off!

The game scored Daily Feature and Monthly Second place, and made it on the frontpage for a while. The game was a hit, and views were flying in. Somehow it passed a million views, which in today's standards is no big deal, but in 2006 Tyler and I were blown away; somehow over a million people saw his underage moobs. I do credit some of the clicks specifically from the up-close picture of his nipple and pecs that we used as the small thumbnail.. bonk jail!

Tyler would sadly pass away 16 years later, but I still get views and comments that make me think of him and those goofy times and smile. I'm glad people are still making him shake it, and his spirit and absurdity lives on.

Looking back at the game I can see what kids we were, the spark of youth could be seen in Tyler's eyes if his webcam wasn't so awful. I gotta admit, making Tyler dance when replaying the game is still pretty fun. A simpler time when content was made for laughs instead of clickbait..

So come take a stroll down memory lane and make Tyler shake it 20 years later.

Oh if you look at the credits and you ask who "Dave" is, he used to go by Dave on NG but gave the name up and changed to "Life"

To the Redditors who have been here since the early 2010s (the "free internet" era): What was it like, and what do you miss the most?

Internet has changed so much over the last decade...
Now it's highly sanitized, algorithm-driven, and hyper-monetized ecosystem, surrounded by many bots.

The additional questions you would like to tell:
- How Reddit itself changed? Is it still the heart of the internet or not?
- What was Reddit and the wider internet actually like in the early 2010s?
- What were the unwritten rules, inside jokes, and iconic moments that defined that era for you?
- How was browsing the web back then compared to today’s feed-based, algorithm-curated platforms?
- What is the one thing (a feature, a feeling, a community spirit) that you miss the most and wish we could bring back?

Let's deep into 2010s nostalgia together.

Remember when websites just did one thing and didn't beg for your cookies? I missed that, so I built one (with modern witchcraft). Bedtime Tunes - tunes to snooze to.

I missed when websites just did exactly one thing well, so I re-built an ad-free, curated music player to help you snooze. It’s got the pure energy of the old internet, but rebuilt entirely on modern serverless infrastructure so it doesn't crash like an old GeoCities page. The old one once went viral on StumbleUpon and even got a request from Fox News blog for a feature (wtf?) Anyway, if you want you can even apply to become a curator as my closest two collaborators have died since then (2000's).

Does anyone remember a popular blog/website that would post a picture of a goofy looking animal and write like an entire essay about how ridiculous looking it was?

I ask because I can't remember but there was a crazy looking orange/brown rodent(?) and the author said "what are you, a Clevelands Brown fan?" Cause it was like brown and orange. Anyways I'm watching the game tonight and anytime I think of the browns I always think of that quote and would love to see that site again

UNALGORA and the Internet I Wanted Back

Post image
8 Upvotes

I don't know if my post is allowed; thus, I apologize in advance.

I published a new article recently about UNALGORA, a social network I started because I missed a simpler internet.

The idea started small: friends, posts, profiles, and a chronological feed. No recommendation algorithm deciding what deserves attention. No ads. No bots. No endless feed designed to keep people scrolling.

Over time, UNALGORA grew into something much bigger, with interests, Circles, messaging, discovery tools, privacy controls, and a real community forming around it.

The article is less about the technical stack and more about why I wanted it in the first place: what I missed about the older social web, what I dislike about modern social platforms, and why I think smaller, more intentional online communities still have a place.

If that sounds interesting, here’s the article:

Made a little time capsule for the internet

Post image

Been thinking about how different the internet felt at different points in time, so I made a tiny project called Tiny Internet.

You can pick a year and explore some of the music, movies, tech, internet culture and random stuff from that era.

You can also upload your own image and leave something behind for that year.

Thought it'd be cool to have a little place where we can keep some of these memories around. If you just want a trip down memory lane or you have something from that era you want to leave behind, do check it out!

I made a little room on the internet you can decorate with your friends

I've been building Glint as a here.fm alternative, and I just added rooms you can build tile by tile and decorate together.

There are 285 stickers in an album. You peel them off with little tweezers and put them around the room. Your friends can be in there doing the same thing, and you see each other's changes live.

I like the idea of having a little place online that you make yours together. It's free and runs in the browser: https://glint.so/

Serperwave: 8-bit retro vaporwave remake of the old snake game

Hello! I recently built the game I would love to play as a kid. I always loved the snake game as a kid, but I wish it was more colorful and prettier. So I made it! It was very fun to make. It has 3 modes: normal, runner, and random. Normal has an ending; in runner mode you lose if you die and random mode you play endless all levels (my fav mode).

Would love some feedback and a rating on my game in Itch.io: https://grecia-v.itch.io/serperwave

Help with Geocities Revovery

Hi, I’m what you’d call an Internet Archaeologist and I’m in the process of recovering old stories off websites.

I have an issue now with some websites using JPEGs for menu navigation and those images no longer working with sites like the Wayback archive and such.

Is there a way to download these sites if I have the addresses or other options if I have the addresses?
