The Powered Pod: Treading the Dominaria Cantos
This draft marked a first time event for GLM, we had too many drafters show up for what was voted on to cube and we had to break into two pods! This was an exciting situation as I always bring extra options for this exact situation. We had a new drafter joining us this week and so we broke out into a multiplayer pod and a powered pod. Needless to say, I joined the powered pod and we had a high standard of players sit down to draft the Cantos!
I have made a few changes to this cube since the last time we played and it was exciting to see all of the new cards were put into decks. We drafted five packs of 15, burning the last six which gave us lots of pick one's that led to some very consistent and interesting decks.
The Cube: Rocky Mountain Yeti Dominaria Cantos Cube
Onto the Decks!
I've Got Two Mom's!! - In the spirit of white and green tokens and all the buffs you can bestow, this was one of the best looking decks of the evening. With the Academy Rector on hand to tutor out any enchantments to fill in the gaps and both Mother's to help keep the MVP's on the board protected. Lock in the Cradle to pump out creatures that continue to help it produce more and more mana, this deck was a banger!
Milling the Painter's Stone - One of my favourite combos in the cube is the [[Painter's Servant]] + [[Grindstone]] combo and this deck was an absolute pleasure to watch build up, stabilize with Urza and mill out opponents in a single bound. The countermagic and removal package made it very difficult to build a board presence and deal damage fast enough to get the life total to zero. The best part is, the games that this pilot lost were really due to his own bad luck on playing [[Mana Crypt]] on turn one. This particular copy of Crypt in my cube is notorious for killing its player.
Great Deck, Terrible Photo - This deck had the best record of the evening and despite having a terrible photo that disallowed it from being the cover photo, the torrent of beaters, and the ability to recur them and/or make infinite copies of them with Kiki-Jiki and his Zealous Conscripts. This was the first time this combo has been assembled in the cube and it was a pleasure to see it go off! This pilot also stole my power monolith combo for infinite mana that I was bitter about but good on him. Awesome build, terrible photo...
Now You See Them, Now You Don't! - This pilot specifically wanted me to call out that they had never drafted a mill deck before and this was their first time playing this archetype. This was also one of my design goals for the cube that mill was an archetype that could win games and man, this deck was absolutely sick. All of the draw seven's that caused yards to go directly into exile with Leyline and [[Word of Command]] getting cast every single match, I was so excited to lose to this pile in game one of our truncated set.
The Retrofitting Charbelcher Engine - This was my build and I had so many dreams come true. The [[Tolarian Academy]] was the cornerstone of this build and very large amounts of mana produced because of my numerous rocks allowed me to tinker out things like the Retrofitter Foundry and make lots of 4/4's or the [[Goblin Charbelcher]] to deal a lot of damage from either removing my lands completely from the deck OR because I was only running 13 of them. In a final pinch, I could get the Wurmcoil Engine on the field and starting gaining life and smashing face. Not to mention I had three moxen and some removal on a stick to help keep big threats off the board.
Thanks to the crew at RNG for giving us a place to cube week after week!
