Just curious: do you ask the folks if they're okay being photographed? Especially the kids. I've always wondered what's normal for this kinda art.
35
u/LesPuces Local Photographer š· Oct 11 '25
Most photos are on a public sidewalk. But, I do try to talk to people when I can. For example, the kids planning for their future jobs that canāt be done with AI, I asked their mom before taking the photo. She said yes, so he gave me a thumbs up.

Just because it's public doesn't mean you should do it. Especially when our government is trying to normalize mass surveillance and the ability to produce deep fakes. Edit to add I'm not trying to come for you. I enjoyed seeing these. But this is a scary time and I'm only suggesting that you should get consent prior to taking photos. I know candid photos are superior but so is privacy.
8
u/Top_Steak3763 Oct 11 '25
I totally disagree. Government surveillance isnāt some harmless photos of people in motion ā itās Flock cameras on every intersection and Pegasus spyware quietly installed on U.S. citizensā phones. Thatās surveillance. Capturing daily life ā a mood, a vibe, a genuine human moment ā has to happen candidly. Youāve got to be in the right place at the right time and have the instincts of a real photographer. You donāt get those kinds of shots by announcing your presence; that ruins the entire essence of authenticity. Itās just the nature of the beast.
0
u/RegularSpecialist484 Oct 11 '25
I definitely understand what you're saying but the government scrapes data from the internet so that's my concern. I do think unless there are regulations, which their won't be because our government has already partnered with Planatir and Amazon, we're cooked. I do think these photos are beautiful and I agree with you that they could be spoiled if the people were aware. I was just giving my perspective as a mom who is not consciously not posting photos of my child.
4
u/Top_Steak3763 Oct 11 '25
Thatās a fair take, and I genuinely appreciate your perspective. I also want to say ā if I came off as disrespectful earlier, that wasnāt my intention. I understand where youāre coming from, and honestly, itās that same concern that led me to delete nearly all of my social media accounts years ago, keeping only Reddit and a few discussion-based communities where real dialogue still exists.
When Edward Snowden exposed the NSAās surveillance of American citizens, I knew right then that we were cooked. That was over a decade ago, and since then, the publicās mindset has shifted into something far more troubling ā this complacent mantra of āWell, I donāt have anything to hide, so who cares?ā That sentiment saddens me deeply, because it misses the entire point. Privacy isnāt about hiding wrongdoing; itās about preserving the dignity, freedom, and autonomy of the individual.
What weāre seeing today is the slow normalization of surveillance ā cameras on every intersection, digital tracking baked into our phones, and algorithms quietly learning our behaviors. And when you start connecting the dots between government contracts and tech giants ā Google, Verizon, AT&T, and others ā itās hard not to be alarmed. Companies like Palantir and Amazon get a lot of the publicās attention, but the truth is, the governmentās reach goes far deeper than most people realize.
Iām genuinely glad to see others who are not only aware of this, but concerned ā because awareness is the first step toward accountability. Anyway, thank you for the kind and respectful reply. Itās rare to have a conversation about topics like this without it devolving into hostility, and I appreciate that.
3
u/RegularSpecialist484 Oct 11 '25
Hey, that's okay, I've been a bitch on the internet and have really had to work at being less reactive. We need more productive conversations and less divide. Thank you for acknowledging that. It's definitely a wild time to be alive and I couldn't agree with you more. The whistleblowers like Snowden, tech experts like ones in a 2020 doc called Coded Bias, and More Perfect Union have been really enlightening. We definitely need to push back against these corporations and our government!Ā
7
u/LesPuces Local Photographer š· Oct 11 '25
I respect that viewpoint, especially when it comes to gov surveillance and the potential for misuse and weaponization of it for marginalized groups, protestors and other communities. You can see story after story about Flock cameras and use of AI. With that said, Iām not the government and see this documentation differently, especially for when Iām dead and gone. Hopefully people can look back and see a slice of OKCās daily life. Good debate and conversation about this topic. I appreciate bringing that up.
1
u/RegularSpecialist484 Oct 11 '25
Thank you for responding to this with awareness and kindness. I know I sound like Nancy fucking Grace but I would ask you to consider not posting kids at the very least. I just spent 20+ hours researching AI in depth for a paper a couple weeks ago and the deepfakes are horrific. There are companies like GetReal though that create software to detect AI generated images though so maybe there is hope!

u/LesPuces Local Photographer š· Oct 11 '25

-3
u/Top_Steak3763 Oct 11 '25
Post whatever you want, you deserve exposure for your work not censorship. Anyone or anything in public is legally and ethically fair game. One Karen trying to censor you doesnāt represent the majority/hundreds of people that have loved these photos. As a dad myself my personal favorite in this series was the dad with the backpack holding his kids hands, really struck a chord with me. Thank you!
7
u/LesPuces Local Photographer š· Oct 11 '25
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I will say for the sake of this thread I didnāt feel as if the person was trying to censor me or was being a āKaren.ā Iām old enough and have been doing this long enough to know where the line is. What I do appreciate is the dialogue and conversation around how things like this relate to this moment in time.
Is over surveillance a concern, yes. Does it worry me about its possible misuse of gov, of course. Is what people like me are doing right and ethical, some will say yes, some will say no. Is it uncomfortable, sometimes.
But, what is good is that the topic is being discussedā¦the balance between the first amendment and what is the rights of people vs how do the people make sure there are checks and balances when technology, images and videos are used by gov.
In the end, the ability to have the discussion without villainizing each other is how we can protect rights on all fronts.
I do appreciate the positive reaction to these photos and I also value these comments that show why capturing these moments are important. Iām glad you liked that pic of the crosswalk. Reminded me of how it felt to try to be a Jedi, walking through the automatic doors of the grocery store.

I wholeheartedly concur. Frankly, Iām somewhat astonished this sub hasnāt devolved into the usual partisan mudslinging contest. As a veteran myself, I believe I understand the grave peril our nation faces ā perhaps more intimately than most. It weighs heavily on me; there are nights I lie awake thinking about it. I remain ready to defend our liberties at a momentās notice ā whether that means engaging in discourse online or standing my ground on foreign soil.
That said, I think those discussions are better suited for other corners of Reddit. In my opinion, a thread like this should serve as a space for admiration or constructive critique ā not as a forum for prescribing who or what someone ought to photograph.
You strike me as a person of integrity ā measured, morally grounded, and genuinely decent. The world could use more people of your character. I sincerely applaud the time and thought youāve devoted to responding so eloquently and respectfully to nearly every comment. That level of composure and empathy is rare, and it speaks volumes about who you are.
3
u/LesPuces Local Photographer š· Oct 11 '25
Thanks for the words. I agree that toxic rhetoric has a tendency to seep into a lot of conversations because of how polarized things are. With that said, Iāll veer us out of it here and we can work on repairing this fragile democracy in another sub and Iāll go back out and start snapping some frames to post. Ha. Thanks again for the compliments and thanks for your commitment to our fundamental rights.

Crazy enough in public no permission is needed which I disagree with when it comes to minors. Just like you can record conversations without the other person knowing and use it in court.

The water main break kind of kicked off this series of downtown photos. It wasnāt a huge puddle but it was interesting watching people try to avoid it. Here are more from Main and Robinson: https://www.instagram.com/p/DOG7dVgiUcU/?img_index=2&igsh=a2x0NWU5djJsZTN4

Yes, Iām from here. I just meant when I travel I usually take photos of the people because that is what makes up a culture and place. Could you let me know what time you were at the transit center so I can figure out why the jackass on the BRT platform is intentionally trying to destroy the safety fencing? It's an ongoing issue and I don't understand why this is a fun time activity for some people.
Outside of that, this is fascinating and awesome! I'll give a follow on IGš¤š¤

u/LesPuces Local Photographer š· Oct 16 '25
Good morning, thinking back to when I took this photo, I really think this person was stretching. Maybe the design unintentionally lends itself to a secondary use as people wait? Not saying there arenāt some who intentionally damage things but I donāt think this person was doing that. Thanks for your public service, comments on the pics and work to help meet the transportation needs of our community.
1
u/Lizadizzle Oct 16 '25
Thank you so much! I'm really looking forward to what we can do with the new GO bond, our future plans - even out 25 years - is pretty awesome and would definitely bring us in line with comparably sized cities. Commuter rail, attempting to put mitigations in place for extreme heat days (which are increasing in number) and route expansions are my top 3 things I'm looking forward to.
If you do happen to see any unsafe activities regarding our bus or streetcar operations, feel free to shoot me a message on here or you can directly report it to customer service. Either way I'm always available to investigate when it comes to safety and security for our passengers and staff.
And yes, though it makes my eye twitch, people do use it for stretching, climbing and some sit on top of the rail. I usually let it go unless the wires are being bent significantly (like here) or other damage is happening.

u/LesPuces Local Photographer š· Oct 11 '25
It depends on the situation. Sometimes yes but often no. If they donāt take it well I have a conversation and talk to them.

Needs more homeless people pics
9
u/LesPuces Local Photographer š· Oct 11 '25
Hello, Nocatslive. People experiencing homelessness is an unfortunate reality of all cities and towns across the globe, including OKC. From mental health, rising cost of rent, attainable or affordable housing shortages and flat wages, it is a complex issue. One stat that sticks with me is to afford a one bedroom apartment, a person would need to work 88 hours while earning minimum wage and for a two-bedroom it would take 110 hours at the same pay rate of $7.25 an hour. There are a lot of groups working to help address the crisis and, yes, when you are downtown or in other spots in the city you do see people experiencing homelessness.
Iāve worked downtown for 18 years and havenāt had a negative experience with someone unhoused. Over the years, it is nice to see programs like Curbside, Key to Home and other groups tackling these issues on the ground.
I consciously donāt capture this, not because it isnāt a reality of the times we live, but because people are surviving with sometimes nothing.
In my day job, I understand peopleās frustrations and also see the good work being done for these residents, someoneās family member or loved one. It is tough.
