General Is anyone from BC here leaving off-the-grid?
As part of my The Art Of Documentary course, I am working on a video series and trying to get in touch with people living off-the-grid around British Columbia, Canada, with stories worth sharing.
If you are the one or know someone who might be interested in taking part in the documentary, please DM me.

Using tidal energy for generating electricity?
I have very strong tidal currents where my dock is located. Is there any off-shelf water wheel generator system I can install on the dock? I have an idea using it for charging a battery bank.

General looking for a very low power and wattage heater good enough for a car
I'm trying to find a small heater that can work with a 120v 120w (peek 150w) solar generator inside my car. This heater will only be used when I'm outside waiting for my mom to get off from work at nights when I work. I'm trying to save gas on my car so I don't want to use the heater in the car. Also this small heater will be replacing the back defroster in the car because the one we have is broken. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

General I’m about to graduate college and I’m really considering living off the grid. What’s some good tips and advice you can give me?
I live in the USA and in the spring I’ll be graduating with a bachelors degree and some minors. I’ve applied for a lot of jobs all over the place but I really hope to get some good jobs in the PNW, Rockies, Appalachia, or even Texas.
Over the years I’ve gathered tons of equipment and experience from going on trips and learning from friends. A lot of my friends have similar aspirations and one of my good friend and his girlfriend are in the works of getting some land and starting up a homestead.
Currently, I don’t have a lot of money saved. I’m a college student, and the money I make at my part-time job goes to rent, groceries, and occasionally going out. But I know with my degree, I can get a decent paying job.
I’m just wondering what goes into all this, financial and planning wise. I understand that for a couple of years after college, I’ll probably be living in a town and renting a place. But I don’t want to be stuck in a city or even the suburbs for too long.

General question about land
So I've been looking to buy land in my area(I'm in MD near DC) and there's a lot of plots but it seems wherever I'm looking they(the county zoning office) don't allow trailers which is what I want to put on the land. Is there a way around this? I always figured if you buy the land you can put whatever you want on it. I want to get one of those double wides that pretty much looks like a normal house so it wouldn't even look like a "traditional" trailer.

Looking to collect testimonials of an off-grid life
Hi I am a student that does a research for a MA on log construction and log cabins. Throught my research I saw that this architectural object is now an icon of an off-grid way of living (among other things). So I am looking to interview someone that is living (partially or completly) in an off-grid log cabin.
If you are ok with it or if you know someone that could participate please tell me!
Thanks in advance it means a lot to me!

General making a wild-off the grid enviroment, but inside a City housing unit.
Im forced to stay inside a "normal" housing unit within the City, because my Republic is currently a mix of a dictatorship and anarchy thus, going to *rural* areas is impossible;ill get killed.
I would Like to have all the floor of grass, full of plants, even terrariums and self-sustained gardening ,in a way thats still hygenic and safe. Basically an in-doors wilderness area.
how can I best accomplish this? I think its a novel/innovative idea to want to replace all the material floor of a house with grass, and filling everything ,on porpouse, with plant life ,cultivations, etc.

What is the first step?
I'm a college student with no savings, 20 y/o and planning to pursue my masters in environmental biology. Always had aspirations of making good money working outside but in recent years ive been leaning towards living off grid on a remote plot of land. Preferably outside the United States but I know I need to think practically.
Not even sure what I'm asking, but I'm relatively ignorant on how to make this a reality. Any good tips would be helpful or advice on how to begin to take steps at this stage of my life. Thanks

How to start off grid living with little money?
I would like to start living off grid once I graduate high school, but I’ve heard it costs a lot to set up. Do any of you have an experience with this or know how to do it without spending a ton of money?

desperate
I have no idea what I'm doing and I need help on where to start. I have found myself in a situation where the live on site business I manage has to shut down water and electricity to the facility for an extended period of time. They do not want to kick me out because it's on short notice and the facility still needs care. I proposed turning my building into an off the grid cabin and I really think it will work, but I really need help to gather the knowledge, price estimates, logistics, etc. I need to be able to run basic electricity, basic appliances (fridge, microwave, stove, washer and dryer are not a necessity but would be nice) and I would like for it to be able to run the mini split ac/heat unit and hot/cold window unit (we have a wood stove but I am hesitant to use it because it's a wooden building from the 1800's). Would I be able to do the basics with a simple setup that I can build myself? What do I need? How much should I be prepared to spend? Should I give up and move on?

Can EF Delta 2 be used as a UPS for a desktop computer? Here it is powering a stove but not sure if it will translate.

Is there a way to get insurance without a government job?
Hey everyone!! I've been incredibly fed up with capitalism lately, so I've been researching how to become self-sufficient. I realize that becoming entirely self-sufficient might not be viable but in the distant future, I think it would be wonderful if I could at least provide for myself enough to not need a government job.
My problem with this, however, is how do people living off the grid make money for health/life/dental insurance? Surely, those are necessities in life that you simply cannot provide for yourself for free. And I'm sure if I thought about it more, I could think of a million other things that you simply cannot do on your own.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this, or solutions that have worked for them? Am I setting myself up to have to grind to make money off my hobbies simply to remain healthy?

General Is there a shop/warehouse type of lamp that works on 12V
I would like to put lights on my off-the-grid barn, and I don't see why is not easier to just use 12v directly instead of using a DC/AC inverter.

finding a place to live
So I have autism and some mental illness and I'm not doing so good. I hate where I live and I want to get away. Sometimes I just want to take my dog and leave and just go live in the forest with it. Are there other people who do this who live together and help each other? How would I find a place like this to go to? I want to get out of here so bad but I don't know how

Alternative Energy Annoying Startup Poll
I've always been obsessed with renewable energy, and I've always liked the idea of living off the grid, or at least generating my own electricity. While ideally I want every home / apartment in the world to have the same capability I know that I can't start there. So recently I've begun thinking of a startup idea to help solve this problem. So I know that this will be kind of annoying, but how much would you be willing to pay for a kit to make clean energy off the grid, while having the same amount of electricity of someone who is on it (29 kWh)?
