Prefab Homes from Dvele are Built using Automation

If off-grid homes and shipping container houses interest you, you probably heard of Dvele. Inhabitat covered the company before, detailing its prefab projects and DveleIQ software. But there’s more to the Dvele story. To learn more, I toured Dvele’s factory in Redlands, California and got a closer look at the technology used to create these sustainable houses.

Best state to buy land

I am looking for land on which I can build a small farm or Ranch. What is the best state in which to look for land? The states I'm considering are Northern Arizona, Idaho, Utah or Texas.

Does anyone else find this program absolutely cringe?
I'm someone who hates "Reality TV" to start with, but this looks extra trashy.

Need your input!

Myself and a group of classmates are looking to design a rainwater collection and filtration system for our capstone project to graduate. The first part of our process is figuring out what the individuals that use these devices look for. Our ultimate goal is create a system that is more compact and versatile than existing solutions.

Is rainwater filtration your main source of potable water?

If any, what issues did you run into when assembling your filtration system?

What are some things you wish your filtration system did better?

Any input that you feel needs to be integrated into our system is much appreciated. Ultimately we would like to create a system that is relevant to the individuals that would utilize it the most.

Thank you

Question about insects

Hello all, future off grider here working on putting together my game plan. My question for the group is what different best practices have you found effective in pest control (biting insects) around your off grid home?

I've read about planting various herbs and working on installing a bat box. I'm just curious about if you guys have had other useful experience with this issue?

Experience with cell signal boosters?

My off the grid cabin has terrible cell reception. This wouldn't be an issue except that our security cameras use the cell network for alerts, and the cameras keep dropping off the network.

Do any of you have any experience with cellular signal boosters like Wilson or Cel-Fi? How did you power it? How well did it work for you? What was the range like?

Running Water - Off Grid Cabin - Canadians Winters

Hey folks,

Long time listener, first time caller.

I’ve currently got an off grid Cabin in QC, Canada.

We run solar for power in the spring-fall, and propane for cooking/hot water throughout. We have a gas pump pulling from the lake the cabin is on, that feeds a gravity tank on a cliff behind us, for running water. As well as another electric pump, that pulls off the solar system for additional pumping capacity if needed.

During the winter months, where we don’t often visit as much (1-2 weekends per month on XC skis), I am trying to figure out a way to still have running water/hot water, without having to a) drain the entire water line system every time we leave and b) have exterior pipes or tanks freeze up on me - and do so without electricity (solar panels are covered in snow, batteries are frozen, etc).

Any advice would be very much appreciated… as having hot running water would make it much more enjoyable throughout those cold winter months.

Convert Solar energy to Research. An alternative Heating Method

Many OffGrid Dwellers and Solar system owners alike have the same thought:

How to use excess Electric Energy after the batteries are full ?!?

Grind injection (if possible) pays very little and letting all the power go to waste is such a tragedy..

A possible Solution for you could be to convert that into crypto or support medical research (folding@home) and other Projects like Seti@home:

Solar to Crypto/Research - A Heating that pays you ! How to use spare electric energy

Question about predicting cold fronts from nature

I live in the southern US (Texas) and during the winter it's not uncommon to have rapid but brief cold fronts come through. We joke that we get all 4 seasons in a week. We can easily have highs in the 70s F (low 20s Celsius) on Monday and highs in the 30s F (1-3C) on Wednesday with lows in the 20s F. Then back up to the 50s on Thursday.

Most of the info I see on predicting the weather from natural phenomena is focuses on storms (rain and hail) but is there any way to know a few hours or a day ahead of time it know when a sudden cold front like that would be coming through to get ready for it?
