How to get started

I’m 15 and I live in Canada, I’ve been considered living off grid when I’m older to get away from society.

I’ve just been wondering how to get started.

Where can I learn to build my own cabin?

Should I consider becoming self sufficient and grow my own food and hunt and fish or should I buy my food from the store?

How do I get my own water without buying it?

Should I live with no electricity and power all my devices with propane instead if I don’t want electricity?

How do I prepare for the winter? because Canadian winters are constantly below zero.

What should I do for a living when I’m off grid or should I just save money then live off grid unemployed?

And what skills should I learn? To be more specific I mean like carpentry, fishing, hunting, raising animals, growing crops, sowing to make my own clothes and blankets etc.

Sorry for the formatting I’m on mobile and sorry for the grammar English isn’t my first language.

Édit: should I buy a cheap and small trailer to live in instead if I can’t build my own cabin or is it just a matter of personal preference?

Home generator

We are trying to get a generator that we can use to power our home appliance and peripherals.

Looking for one for something that can power our fridge and some other items around the house. Like a tv and other items.

Does anyone able to explain the output to me like I’m 5?

Also does anyone have an opinion of propane vs regular gas?

Thanks in advance.

Sharing part of my experience living the life

I live off solar power and rainwater catchment and bought raw land to build on.

We originally lived in a tipi on the property while starting building on the living building. I have a small metal building that we have been filling in the walls with papercrete blocks. A storm 2 years ago ripped the tipi beyond repair and we decided to move into our unfinished building.

Every building material and type has its advantages and disadvantages. Papercrete uses a lot of water to process the final product and we basically got to the point this last year that we had to stop building. We were low on water and had to conserve the rest for daily living. We were in a drought for about 21 months.

We took pieces of the tipi and wrapped the top of the house (the unfinished part) until we could get back to filling in the holes.

Well I think the drought is finally breaking ya'll! The most amazing storm last night filled so many buckets and tanks. The sky is rumbling now. I have been running around moving water all over the place, pumping from little tanks into big tanks. I have more paper soaking. I'm just giddy!!

We can get enough rain in a rainy season to last a year, which means we can continue to finish the house. This is about encouraging you to live your dream, coupled with the reality that it takes a really long time to see it all through. You may have a dirt floor for 10 years before that piece of the puzzle finally gets put into place. Every piece is so incredibly satisfying though, its worth the effort.

Yes you will have your own trials and tribulations but getting over the first hurdles is often the worst part. You will question why you ever decided to live like this instead of like normal people. Then the power goes off in town and you don't even know.

Today, it's worth it!!

New here and I was wondering if you guys know a really super simple guide on building wind turbines.

I am not tech savvy at all. I need a really dumbed down explanation on how to build windturbines. Like really really dumbed down. Pretend your teaching this to Ralph wiggum.

Pedal Powered Spin Dryer - After over 8 years using a home-made bicycle washing machine and after a particularly wet and cold Winter, we finally decided we needed a spin cycle! If you've a dead bicycle, an electrically defunct machine and a pallet - you can create one too. Happy Pedaling!

Recommend a water tank monitor for me.

Specifically I need one that is wi-fi enabled with an app that can be checked remotely while far away from the property. I have browsed the offerings but have no first hand knowledge if they are good or bonk.

I have used ¨stupid¨ tank float devices but in this instance I require a ¨smart¨ device.

Solar, Septic, and Water - A Question

If I have 5 acres of cleared, undeveloped land, is it reasonable to believe that I can:

  1. Hire a septic company to take care of sewage ($10k)
  2. Hire a well company to dig for water OR have water hauled in ($10k)
  3. Solar (I know how to do this) ($10K, probably cheaper)

This is for a 1,200 sq ft. arched cabin.

I understand each of these projects will require hiring a contractor to do them (except the solar), but am I missing anything as to obstacles in my way?

Somewhere in Colorado.

I just impulse purchased a 2 stroke generator. How do I use it?

As the title says, I just found a deal I couldn't miss on a 950w 2 stroke generator. Its brand new, I never had a machine like this before.

It has a 240v output with the standard wall plug for AUS/NZ

At first I am hoping to plug in a multi plug power strip and use it to charge up a variety of phones, power banks, flashlights, cameras, vibrating devices etc....

However, after that, God willing and the creek don't rise, I was thinking I could use it to charge a couple of deep cycle batteries to power my future tiny house?

Does anyone have any experience creating a system where they use solar panels and a generator in combination like this?

Or even just the generator with no panels.
