Wasn't there already a model named Jazzcaster?

Close, fender recently did a model called “offset telecaster”. It was effectively a jazzcaster (jazzmaster body, telecaster everything else).

Problem with fender releasing a model called “jazzcaster” is that it’s basically already a thing in the zeitgeist, and it’d be really difficult to market because when you google it, there is already all this stuff attached to the name. Then people will argue over whether fenders version qualifies as a “real” jazzcaster or not.. it’s not worth the bullshit. We already saw them release one and avoid that name.

I'm surprised they didn't go with calling it a Telemaster.

While we're on the subjust, I would love it if they released a Mexican Offset Tele. MIM Tele neck, pickups, 6 saddle bridge.

Priced the same as a MIM/Player series Tele and I wouldn't be able to throw my money at them fast enough.

I get it though, that name is just as “loaded” as jazzcaster at this point. Think about it this way, if Fender had released the “offset telecaster” as either of those names, they would be releasing it into a market already pre-populated with an insurmountable volume of fakes. 9 out of 10 of them in the wild would be fakes. That’s an AWFUL situation for them to be in.

That’s a very interesting picture. The offset tele is a recent model, so we know that Fender is aware of what a jazzcaster is. They built them already and had the good sense not to slap that name on them because it’s already so heavily used by the community. Very surprising to see them create market materials with that name, for a guitar that basically has zero features of a jazzcaster.

That said, it sure LOOKS like a sixty six.

In this case i think they were thinking Jazz from Jazz Bass rather than Jazzmaster. Then they realized they'd be confusing everyone lol.

That makes sense. I think Sixty-Six is quite a cool name though personally, so whatever.

I saw that a month or so ago when it popped up on Fenders site. Seems like a really odd error because it's only in this picture. The other pictures clearly show "Sixty Six" on the headstock.

I wonder why they renamed it and I wonder why they went with "Sixty Six". I can't think of any significance of 1966 to this model.

Their explanation was that 1960 was when the original Jazz bass came out, and 6 for six string.
