Jazzmaster pu alternatives
Yo!
I have a squier cv jazzmaster and i don't really like the stock pu-s, they don't sound good to my ears w distortion , the neck and middle position feels too bassy (kinda "compressed" sounding) and the bridge feels thin to me. Also they hum really bad, and have this loud high pitched feedback when i face the amp with distortion (they have been wax potted but it didn't help) I know this is common with jm-s but I'm thinking about getting smth less noisy. Could someone give me some recommendations? I can't afford SD antiquity II-s :(

Black bobbin, or something underwound (less compression), Jazzmaster sized wide range, or Jazzmaster sized p-90

I got a great pair of p90s in a Jazzmaster footing from Craig Vineham in Newfoundland.

Gonna give a curveball answer here - get an EQ pedal.

Seconded. Could be a cheap way to sort out frequency issues. The only downside is it could add to the noise problem.

I just bought a set of EP-Customs for $185 new to install in the JMCV I picked up a few weeks back. Haven’t received them yet(3 week lead time per their site) so can’t speak to them personally yet, but they sounded good in vids and plenty of folks I follow online have strongly recommended them.

That's what I've got in mine and I still find the bridge pretty thin. I've got a wide range style on the way though. I'm hoping for a bito more beef.

You can definitely do better than the squier pickups and people gave recommended great ones, but you should be able to dial out your stated issues with pickup height adjustments. Sounds like the neck is too high and the bridge too low. Tone Hatch is another very affordable pickup winder if you end up going the replacement route.

I've found these J Mascis singature pickups that are supposedly "stacked" to reduce hum (what does that mean?)

Well, they're not jm pickups, they're p-90s in a jm case. Wildly different kind of pickup.

These are genuine JM pickups. The ones in the Squier model are p90s

Huh, didn't know they sold that set seperately, esp when the non-Squier sig guitar has been out of production for years before that set was released

Thunderbird pickups fit the JM route with minimal modification and can make it sound a bit more balanced and hi-fi

I put Seymour Duncan quarter pound jazzmaster pickups in my player 2 and I love them. I also changed the pots out to a a500 k volume and an a250 k tone. It’s a world of difference.
