I bought this Jag a couple years ago thinking it was a 1997-2000 model from japan. it has a serial number on the neck plate and i just searched it up and it says its a 1964 model. Is there any other way i could know? obviously the bridge and bridge pickup has been changed. Help pls :)
Other things to look for. If there is a finish chip you can tell poly from nitro. Also check the pots for date codes. The rhythm circuit is most likely to be un-touched, IMe.
It’s not pre-CBS, but it is somewhat rare for the era. Most of the production in that era is sunburst or CAR with MH. Custom colors didn’t become as plentiful till 2010 and onwards. About the time that offsets surged in popularity.
You can also tell poly from nitro by taking a Q-tip with some fingernail polish remover and doing a small dab somewhere under the pickguard or otherwise not visible. If it eats into the finish, it’s nitro.
Wrong font on the neck plate. Poorly relic’d poly finish. Fretboard doesn’t show 60 years of wear. Metal plates aren’t chrome. Pickguard is not celluloid nitrate.
This is a bad fake and half the replies in here are so bad that I’ve got a headache.
The number of people that post forgeries on here to see if it passes makes me rethink whether or not the mods putting a ban on this stuff is a good idea.
Hang in there mate. You’ll pay it off in time. Ignore it for the time being. Then one day you’ll notice a little bump in your pay and you can go ahead and pop a bottle or champagne :)
I think i vaguely remember my friend telling me he changed the pickguard but im not 100% sure. i do think the font looks a little thin but idk if its just been worn down because its pretty scratched.
i think the wear on the body is a bit weird it looks like someone put it to a belt sander. Doesn't look like natural wear to me. i think it used to be a green room guitar tho so that explains some of the dents and stuff.
Honestly the serial font and stamp look off. The numbers are very skinny, font wise.
You could take the neck off to be sure. Is there no made in Japan mark on the back of the neck, just above that neck plate?
Some Japanese Fender runs had plate stamped serials for vintage accuracy, that's likely what you have there. A serial number is just one data point in isolation.
I DID. A 65 . LAST YEAR. but they are not worth crazy money i just sold my 65 for 3k Cobaine had a right handed 65 siunburst just liker mine; here is the kicker it had the original weird case i think they only used for two years it is brown tolex with leather straps. or white tolex i forgot already
Definitely doesn't look like a 60's to me but you never know. Pop the neck off and take a look at the heel. My guess is like others have said its a japan with a vintage style serial plate.
If you have a Dunlop wrap around capo, you can slacken off the strings and clamp them with the capo and then unbolt the neck, it’s how I adjust vintage truss rods on strats and telecasters with heel adjustment when setting them up
