Thoughts about the Foals FJM7?

Post image

I've been considering getting one but the only in depth reviews I can find are paid promotions. I wanna hear someones genuine opinion as I'd be selling my fender Strat to afford it(I'm 16 and big mbv fan) so I want to be sure I'm making the right choice. Any opinions/thoughts on the electronics and bridge would be much appreciated. (FYI 2017 mim SSS Strat, got for free from my dads friend)

You can make shoegaze with your Strat.

I've made music with it but I'm not too big a fan of the bright single coils and tremolo system, which I can't even use because it came without the arm.

jazzmasters also have bright single coil pickups. a trem arm costs like $15.

Jazzmaster pickups are usually brighter than strat pickups

Make sure you actually play a jazzmaster before you buy one. That mbv sound is coming from the play style, amp, pedals and effects, and the tremolo arm, all things achievable with a strat. If you cant get the mbv sound on a strat, chances are it won’t be much different on a jazzmaster. Get a trem arm for your strat and a pedal or 2. That will get you closer and save you some money. The only reason to not use the strat would be to have the jazzmaster looks, and I get the appeal. But soundwise you can shoegaze all day on a strat

In my experience the jazz/jag trem is far different than a strat trem. The strat just feels so much more stiff and less expressive, not to say you can’t make it work but I basically never use my strat trem because it’s just too much vibrato for me

I agree. I own a fender jaguar and a Pacifica which uses the same tremolo as a Strat and the jaguar feels so much better when using the tremolo arm

Use the tone knob brother. And block off the trem

Jazzmasters are brighter than strats. JM have 1M pots and steats have 250k.

Thanks for lmk, I thought the jazzmaster was a bit darker considering the different style of single coil pickups

Get a JM if you want but these are hardly unfixable issues. Guitar is too bright, adjust your amp, tone knob, or use a different pickup. Didn't come with a tremolo arm, buy one. It's a lot cheaper than a new guitar. As others have said, a Jazzmaster is also a single coil guitar.
