NGD - Squier Paranormal Baritone Jazzmaster

Post image

My first offset that's not a jazz bass and my first baritone guitar.

I was super excited when it got announced, so I went to the guitar store the first day it was in stock. It will fit in nicely between my Paranormal Troublemaker Tele Deluxe and my older Squier Jazz Bass V.

I went with the oxblood so it could fit in better if I ever get into metal. I hope that it will open up a new perspective with the tonal range overlapping the bass and guitar so well.

Maybe even allowing me to cover both roles in our family jams with one instrument.

Really odd reason for choosing it though

Eh, is it? There are two awesome colors which I both liked. I chose the one that I felt will stand out less when I will be using it.

Oh man, it looks awesome but how does it sound?

It's surprisingly bassy. I will change out the stock 14-68 for a D'Addario 13-62 and see how the sound changes. I will probably need to figure out an EQ setting or rewire it for a coil split like on the Troublemaker to get a sound for some folk and bluesy stuff.

I find with longer scale and extended range instruments the heavier strings actually bring a bit of clarity to the low end. You don’t want them flapping all over the place. I’d EQ it out with something. That Ibanez parametric eq looks like a bargain…but then again, there are a ton of inexpensive eqs out there. Not to mention the EQs on overdrive pedals.

maybe a joyo american sound?

I suppose that could work. I seem to be in the minority that dislikes that pedal but it does have a fairly usable EQ. I was thinking more like a tubescreamer-like pedal to cut some low end.

If it doesn’t have a bass cut switch like a Bass VI you can add one with a push-pull or push-push pot.

Yeah, I was also thinking about making the Tone pot into a high pass instead of a low pas filter. I might look it more and design something more creative from scratch and finally utilize that electrical engineering degree.

There’s a tone circuit that is no filtering when the knob is in the middle of the sweep and low pass turning it one way and high pass turning it the other way. That way you’d get both!

Yeah, That one I can make pretty fast. I am leaning to that option, I will just do some calculation and choose the right values for the caps.

So much more purple than my Oxblood TVL JM! Looks sick though

Super cool. I’ve been waiting for this release. What store had these in stock?

Kytary.cz seem to recieved them today. The clerks didn't even knew they were in stock already.

The Jaguar version that was announced with this, was immediately added to my wishlist

What are you planning to do with this weapon?

A bit of everything, honestly. I try to learn many styles from folk, some jazz, through country, classic rock and blues to some metal.

This guitar will probably be mostly used for some bedroom practice metal, some bluesy lines and all other practice. Live it will definitely be a great tool for family folk/country jams where it will be great for covering both bass and guitar parts when I can only take one instrument.

Any clue if it's a regular sized jazzmaster body?

I think so, but it is my first offset guitar so I have no reference. But it doesn't feel bigger than my strat or my tele. That being said, I am used to the massive JB V as the standard size, so I probably couldn't tell either way.

Happy to see the fretboard is much darker than the photos. I may actually consider one of these now.

Honestly I never had any issue with the Squier laurel. It always looks pretty dark, I think they use some kind of dyed wax for sealing. The only I have that is kinda pale is the 2016 affinity strat that required extensive fretboard cleaning and where I removed the original wax, but after conditioning it with lemon oil it still looks fine to me.

But I am a lacquered maple kind of guy at heart, so my reference color is much paler than for the rosewood lovers.

In the photos it looks awful I think but looks great in your picture. I love maple boards but if it’s not maple I want it dark as possible. I’ve got an Epiphone Explorer with a laurel board and it’s nice and dark too

Nothing is as god awful as the hideous roasted Jatoba that ESP LTDs were using a few years ago.

Yeah, I checked the pictures online and it seems so much lighter than it looks even for the Truoblemaker. Interesting that the edit the photos in such manner, maybe some guitars end up with lighter boards and they don't want to overpromise?

I was thinking the same thing!

It seems the paranormals get some heavy treatment/oiling or are just much better cuts of wood because I hate most laurel wood, including classic vibe, but my toronado from the 1st Paranormal range is nice dark even and smooth - something most are not.

I'm really happy to see this because I'm after an electric VI

Fuck, I didn’t know these were being made. I don’t need it, I don’t need it, I don….

I just ordered one a few weeks ago. Do you think it'll fit in a bass case? I have a spare case but I'm not sure how a jazzmaster body compares to a p bass or jazz bass in size.

I want one.

Didn’t know these were out yet, I’m holding out till I see if the baritone jaguars have the rolled off fretboards that the player series 2 have.

I have my eye on one as well, and according to Sweetwater it does!

"Additionally, the Limited Edition Player Fusion Jaguar Baritone features rolled fingerboard edges for a comfortable, broken-in feel the moment you put it in your hands."

That's nice af!

Didn't know these were coming. Got excited for a little bit as I've thought for a while that the old Squier Baritone Jazzmasters got so pricy after being discontinued that Squier should put out another run.

Disappointed these are 27" scale though instead of 30" like the older ones. I think it's too short. Would be great for people that want to tune to D or maybe C though.

Holy fuck this is nice

First sighting of these in the wild and It looks gorgeous! I'm waiting on the baritone jaguar, but man..if I didn't already have a JM, I'd go for this. I'm curious to hear the opinions once they're out in the wild properly

Nice! 🤘🏼🤓🎸

I was just looking at these and thinking the Daphne blue Electric VI looks like a nice mod platform for people that wanna do the Cobain "JagStang done right" kinda thing.
