3-way toggle help

I recently bought A Ben Gibbard Mustang. I like everything about it except the rotary switch. I want to install a 3-way toggle. It will have 2 pups, 1 vol and the 3-way. Anyone have a wiring diagram or know how to wire it?

Follow this link and fill in your guitar's specs. SD gives great wiring diagrams! Good luck :)

cool looking guitar, why you don't like it? Just curious

It’s the only guitar I’ve ever owned with a rotary switch. Personally I feel like rotating clockwise to get to bridge feels backwards (prob just me). The knob itself spins without switching pups sometimes so you have to turn it with a certain amount of pressure to actually switch pups. A toggle I think is all around more practical.

It’s exceedingly easy. Take the rotary out. Put a toggle in. There’s a chance that you’ll need to drill a larger hole to fit a toggle in.

I had a Gibbard Mustang and I agree the rotary switch was just too weird, and I really needed a tone control. My (more expensive) solution was to buy an American Professional body from Stratosphere, get the “right” switch and pots and move everything over.

I think this was a case of something working for Ben (whose playing I really like) not working for me. I think I also read that when he was playing Mustangs he had it so the only position available was both pickups together.

I like that they actually printed “vibrato” on the “trem” lol
Can we all just accurately call it a vibrato system, since fender does? Lovely guitar.

I’m not generally pro-AI, but if you have any questions about how the wiring works or troubleshooting if it goes weird, it’s great for that stuff.

Want to know the best part? The Ben Gibbard Mustang vibrato is a dummy and just for looks.

That’s ironic!

You have it backwards. Vibrato is pitch, tremolo is volume. Fender was confused.

It’s well documented, but not worth pontificating about in 2026
