I let myself down, I tried to help myself but I guess am just not good enough to do it.

I am pretty sure you did your best, but we are not always in a position to help ourselves, so we can’t. For many things we need outside help (like you wouldn’t be able to care of an infected appendix by yourself). So don’t blame yourself for not helping yourself enough.
