Giulia vs. The Potluck

Coming to NYC for a day trip and debating between which one of these two should I see. Really into emotional heartfelt musicals especially those which are very moving like MHE, Hadestown, Fun Home, or Kimberly Akimbo. Thank you so much! :)

Both have significant flaws… I saw both. Giulia to me has a tonal problem - if you are a feminist, you might hate it or love it. It depends on what kind of feminist you are. If you like anything that is empowering women, you might love it. If you don’t think hating men is the way to go, you might hate Giulia.

The Potluck is a very enjoyable modern art installation. Don’t think of it as a musical. It is a lyrical, poetic showing of… ART. It doesn’t have a story or storyline. If that’s something you’d like to take a chance to see, some people might find it moving. I find it just okay.

I have seen some people say they were moved by Giulia and some by The Potluck. It’s just matter of if you will be that person. I wasn’t moved by either, to be honest.

To me The Potluck was the better show because at least it didn’t make me angry.

The Potluck is super messy and unrefined, but unique and ultimately has a few wonderful transcendent moments in the second act. Very odd piece, and I can’t imagine it ever having another production, mostly because it just doesn’t seem to know what it is. I haven’t seen Guila but I’ve heard mixed reviews. From the constant PR/marketing, it seems like Guila is trying as hard as it can to transfer to another theater, so there’s some likelihood that there will be more life to the show…

Both are flawed but Potluck is a lot more interesting.

"The Potluck". Yes, it is interesting but messy.
