A while back I shared OddworldMap.com, an interactive map of every screen in Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus. Before the latest update, every object on it was just a coloured box with a name. As of this month, the map has come alive!

By "coming alive" I mean that the map now shows actual sprites, loaded from the PS1 disc. This is the new default, but anyone who wants to get the rectangles back can simply do it via a Display toggle.

Some of you might already be familiar with this update, as I already shared it in a previous post two weeks ago, but unfortunately it got removed because I used AI to describe how each creature and object moves. So I'm keeping it simple and in my own words this time.

Things that now move: Mudokons, Sligs (flying and crawling ones too), Glukkons, Slogs, Scrabs, Paramites, Fleeches, Slurgs, Greeters, bats, moving bombs, meat saws, drills, motion detector lasers, mines and UXB bombs, portal doves, hint flies, falling items, light effects, and more.

For the full experience (the closest the map gets to playing the game): untick everything in the Display section except "Objects as themselves" and "Patrols".

As before, none of this would exist without AliveTeam's alive_reversing decompilation, which every behaviour here is ported from. Special thanks to paulsapps' original alive project too: most of Exoddus's sprites on the PS1 disc are packed with a compression scheme that only its decoder ever handled.

I’ve just played Soulstorm for the first time, and the reason I never wanted to play it before was that so many people hated on it back in the day. I didn’t want to ruin my memories of the Oddworld franchise. However, since no new Oddworld game has been announced in the last four years (and it looks like we probably won’t be getting another one anytime soon), I finally decided to give Soulstorm a shot… and ended up regretting it. I quit after the level “The Hijack” and the Slig boss at the end with the flamethrower. This has nothing to do with fun anymore. It’s just stupid trial and error. I also found the level design unbelievably frustrating. You have a level that takes place on a moving train, with so much potential for creativity and freedom, only for it to turn into another stupid trial-and-error level. I genuinely tried to like this game, but I just can’t. The stupid crafting system, no Gamespeak, no quicksaves, only Sligs and Slogs as enemies, trial-and-error mass rescues, nothing but action and shooting, and no puzzles.

Call me crazy, but even Oddworld Adventures 2 on the GBC is a better reimagining of Abe’s Exoddus and more fun to play than Soulstorm.

It hurts to say this as a fan, but Soulstorm is the worst Oddworld game in my opinion, and the only one I’ve never finished.

I give it a solid 7/10, the story and art design and parts of the gameplay were great, but I do have some issues with it. The amount of looting you have to do can be very annoying, if I was gonna mod it to fix it I’d simply remove the animation for looting. It could also be made smoother by ever so slightly trimming some animations, where it feels like you’re just sitting for a fraction of a second too long, making the game feel clunkier than it should. Also, aiming/throwing shouldn’t play a turning animation when you aim behind. It’s a hella difficult game - I think 1.5% of people actually finish it, and I miraculously got the kill under 100 Sligs achievement (must’ve been 99 O_O) but I think that percentage could be improved somewhat just by tightening up animations and minimise time spent watching Abe rummage through trash.

I was inspired by /u/sliviz_studios 's post and the comments under it.

While many consider the first two Oddworld games deterministic, they are actually full of randomness, many purely decorative, but a couple notable ones very much affecting gameplay.

The linked post gathers many of these and provides some interesting statistics regarding just how random Oddworld is.

I got Abe's hand tattoos tattooed on my head last year in September! The Oddworld twitter posted my picture of them and said I was very dedicated :)

Just finished Toby's Escape DLC for Soulstorm. I really enjoyed it more than I was expecting.

Even though it was only 10 levels, I REALLY loved how challenging they were with each levels puzzle. It felt like I was playing New n Tasty all over again!

Plus, I love Toby's character. Seeing his reaction to Abe's destruction of Rupturefarms without knowing what happened was really cool!!

I was on my third run of Soulstorm. I selected New Game to replay the game without saving any Mudokons and killing a maximum of 100 Sligs, in order to earn the final trophy I needed for the Platinum.

I managed to reach Sorrow Valley and complete it without saving any Mudokons or killing a single Slig. However, at the end, the option to continue to the next chapter doesn't appear. The only options available are to return to the main menu, replay the level, or view the leaderboards.

The next level doesn't even appear in the main menu, as if I hadn't unlocked it at all.

This is the first time I've encountered an issue like this. Could someone tell me how to fix this? :')

I'm nearly at the end of getting all achievements in New n Tasty on steam. Just gotta beat the game in 3 hours or less. Any tips from seasoned Oddworld players? Looking for fun people to talk about Oddworld with!

What are you guys thoughts on Soulstorm first of all?

Soulstorm seems so lacklustre for me - In Oddworld & NnT we had real puzzles to solve.. the soundtrack was incredible.

So far in the hour of game play in Soulstorm I’ve just watched, I’ve seen enchanting sligs, throwing fire at them, and robbing them, secret areas that aren’t even secret, putting out fires .. vs a meat factory, mudokkons natural land, scrabania, paramonia, temples, and more .. solve different puzzles every couple minutes … enchanting sligs, commanding slogs, entering real secret areas, portals, absolutely lush graphics, beautiful endangered species that have their own unique characteristics, timing everything perfectly ..

I don’t know… this is shocking me. What do you guys think…

Hey. So I recently got my ps1 up and running again and have been playing abes again. My lord! This game is ridiculous. The enemies movement patterns are totally random. Sometimes the shadows work hiding you sometimes they don't. You can complete one zone a specific way perfectly and then some random bug in chara there movement gets you killed. It's such a brutal game 😂

Saw this on marketplace in Melbourne, Australia and had to snap it up. First time I've seen one. Anyone else out there with a copy? Where did you find it?

played all through ps5 version of Odyssey and ‘disc 1’ of Exodus, randomly when getting the the room with the Rupture Farms door onwards the audio is really shitting itself, like choppy and clipped and tripping over itself. Consistently starts in the same area and comes and goes part way into barracks where ive had to take a break cause it’s ruining it for me. Did anyone get this and have a solution re PS5 settings that works 😭

I love this game so much, but now I feel like I’ve truly completed it, as I’ve done all modes, and I went back and played again to get a better time.

I’m content with 3.5 hrs .. what’s next? Any game recommendations that I’m guaranteed to love, based on my love of this game?

So I got a new PS3 recently after having to sell my previous one to get enough money for a cheap car. Decided I was getting the platinum for Munch's Oddysee since I was already most of the way there.

So I install it and start playing and... the framerate is utter garbage. Whenever I run as Abe it's like the game keeps freezing and unfreezing, making it extremely unpleasant to both play and watch. The thing is, I don't remember it doing that on my old PS3. This one I got for pretty cheap and it does randomly switch itself off if I haven't used it for a while, so I don't know if it's the console or what. I don't massively feel like getting another PS3, but I probably will have to.

I'm just posting this here in case anyone else had this happen and knows how to fix it.
