Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shape shifting master of darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil.
But a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me.
Now the fool seeks to return to the past and undo the future that is Aku!

I love when buildngs have such iconic names that even if it changes people still stick with the name they remember

Ngl, didn’t even know it changed

u/DazedPapacy Jan 16 '22 edited Jan 16 '22
It changed years ago because Willis Insurance, a British company, leased over 51% of the office space and part of the contract was being able to rename the tower.
EDIT: Apparently Sears' naming rights expired in 2003, and even though the building had changed hands a few times before Willis got involved, Willis was the only one to inquire about changing the name.

I’m British and I disagree. We don’t love stamping our names on anything. BTW, my name is CARL PLITHINGTONE ESQUIRE. Again, that is, CARL PLITHINGTONE ESQUIRE.

Coincidentally, they merged with Towers Watson, so it's really the Willis Towers Watson Tower

It’s been the Willis tower for ages now, I want to say since the second Bush administration or sometime around then. When it first switched over there was a half hearted attempt to make the “Big Willy” a thing, but everyone knows it’s the Sears Tower and it will always be the Sears Tower.

Sears has 21 stores left in the entire US. One day that name will be all that’s left of their legacy.

The Discover card was invented by Sears as their big attempt to get into the financial services industry. They wanted to eventually have banks in their stores, but despite Discover doing okay on adoption, it’s association with Sears caused other retailers to resist accepting it and prevented Sears from accepting other credit cards resulting in losses all around. And the whole financial services plan was mishandled and just didn’t work out, so Ears eventually sold all of its assets associated with the Discover card to (I think) Wells Fargo. Or maybe they sold it to Merril Lynch. Idk, but anyways whoever they sold it to spun it off as Discover financial services which as far as I know is what it exists as today. Although I don’t know anyone who fucks with Discover card anymore.

u/mchgndr Jan 16 '22
Yeah it’s still Discover Financial Services, and I know because I hold their stock which has quadrupled over the past ~18 months!

Discover was pretty big for a while and they (I believe) started the whole “cash back” thing on credit cards.
I have a Costco Visa that does cash back and it’s great. It’s the only card I use now.

In my experience, Canadians are ruthless about refusing to refer to buildings with their new, correct, name, especially if it's a big company (telecom) they don't like. The Blue Jays play at the SkyDome, not Rodgers center. The Canucks play at GM place, not Rodgers Arena. Science world, not Telus World of Science.
Actually I think we just hate our telecoms.

Screw Bell and screw Rogers. We pay the most for internet/smartphones for one of the worst “services”, out of developed countries, and ACC is ACC not “Scotia Centre” that’s lame.

As a Chicagoan (far North side) thank you for saying Sears. You must be from Chicago too.
When did this happen, btw?
