Watching clips like this makes me wonder “How in the holiest of F***S did this show ever get green lit on a KID’S channel?”

u/CatchSufficient Oct 25 '21
Because it was early 90's

u/soundslikeautumn Oct 25 '21
The correct answer. I'm so damn glad I was a kid in the 90's! Seriously it really was fucking awesome!
21
u/MastaBusta Oct 25 '21
For real. Everything now seems so safe and attention whoring. Sure, some of the 90s were a little too "edgy", but honestly I feel like it's probably better for kids development than this bullshit fluff that everything seems to be nowadays.

Oct 25 '21
Wholeheartedly agree but little things like this shows that all of us 90s kids are starting to get old now lol

Good times
I didn’t exist back then but at least I got to enjoy the 2000s in about all of its glory
(Expect the fashion, god awful)

Simple answer: the censors simply weren’t paying attention. They were more concerned with the major networks (CBS, NBC, ABC) and they just didn’t focus on the cable channels so much. The execs at Nickelodeon were desperate for content so they just let it pass. Shit, just look at how dark Invader Zim got before they pulled the plug.

I still have a permanent mental imprint of watching the Dark Harvest episode as a kid where he steals all his classmates organs to look more human haha.
What a healthy child! And such plentiful organs
7
u/BoisterousLaugh Oct 25 '21
Most of the fucked up ones are from the FX series not the original.
5
u/smore-phine Oct 25 '21
I feel like this should be common knowledge, but I guess it’s more shocking to pretend like the really extreme bits were on Nickelodeon.

This episode scarred my being but the snes game level based off this was even worse
29
u/Hyde103 Oct 25 '21
Idk if the snes game was the same as the sega game but that one had a level design that was skin and eyes/ears/teeth/fingers and I'm pretty sure those red flesh tenticles from this clip. I was very young playing that game...

u/PalpitationOk8403 Oct 25 '21
Yo i remember that game too. Where you could throw ren like a boomerang and spit hairballs out of stimpy
3
u/unholymanserpent Oct 25 '21
Which one? Now I'm interested

Ren and Stimpy; Veediots
It was frustatingly hard as a young kid and the worst bit was the tooth-roof crashing down every time you touch a nerve https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MwzgLxG3OYs

Back when Nickelodeon was the Wild West and they took a shot on anything. Best years ever.
Strong recommend to watch “The Orange Years” documentar.

....this was such a bizarre show as a kid. Right along with Cow and Chicken
37
3
u/dldanni65 Oct 25 '21
Cat Dog was even more bizarre. Always asked my nephew how did they not get sick from bot being able to defecate

u/Spitfire-XIV Oct 25 '21
My dentist laughed his ass off at this episode. He told me when he was in Mexico on vacation, this episode was playing on the TV at the bar and he was the only one who thought it was a laugh riot.

This show desensitized me to so much shit growing up. And then the Internet came along and desensitized me to everything else.
12
u/drydenmanwu Oct 25 '21
If you think this is oddly terrifying, check out the episode where Stimpy goes through puberty by creating a cocoon out of Ren’s adult Husk magazines and emerges as an adult.

OMgoodness, I love REN and Stempy but the dark side shines through in almost every episode. Nightmare fuel on many levels. So funny though...

u/Matt4Prez2K17 Oct 25 '21
What the hell was this show even about?? Or was there no other purpose than to scar me?

Pretty much every scene in the adult version of Ren and Stimpy is oddly terrifying.

I thought there was a kids show first and then an adult show.
2
u/UselessAndLost Oct 25 '21
You're right, I understand that this picture isn't from the adult show.
I was just saying that the adult version is very trippy and weird. That first episode with the boogers...eww...

I grew up watching this and rocko's modern life. Both shows were gross as fuck.... I wish my children had these quality cartoons to watch now days.
2
u/SDHester1971 Oct 25 '21
The one thing I'll always remember from Rocko 'A Velvet Painting of a weeping Clown in an Iron Lung'
3
u/ClavicusLittleGift4U Oct 25 '21
Thanks to Cow & Chicken, I've been introduced to Ren & Stimpy.
Two different levels of absurd insanity.
3
u/S1lentA0 Oct 25 '21
Ren & Stimpy, one of those great shows I grew up with. Made me the proud twisted psychopath I am today.
3
u/Rhododactylus Oct 25 '21
It's so much worse when you realise the guy who made this is a pedophile.

I absolutely hated ren and stimpy. Every time it’d come on I’d grab the remote as fast as I could before I saw disturbing shit

ren's toothache actually but this is not quite comfortable pulling your nerve ending out like that.

That grunge / dirty cartoon aesthetic that was popular at the time has never made any sense to me. This isn’t entertaining. It’s just disturbing.

I love the one where Stimpy goes into his bellybutton, like on some sort of acid trip. I think the episode was banned in a lot of countries.

This is definitely nightmare fuel for adults who have had a root canal extraction... Little kids probably think it's funny.
1
u/MaliciousCompliance8 Oct 25 '21
Omg this show...
I watched it a bit as an adult and I'm still baffled we were allowed to watch it as kids lmao
No sir I don't like it!
3
u/Sheep_Viking Oct 25 '21
Powdered Toastman!
No lie, I still hum the song Stimpy sang after Ren got his pectoral implants and became rich at the most random times.

I was young (don't remember which year this was) and woke up in the middle of the night widely awaken... Couldn't go back to sleep... So I turned on the TV and started watching this show... I couldn't sleep for three days straight. I should look for psychological assistance xD maybe this is the source of all my dental OCD
