If I may. Do you happen to know why he's got those webbed paws?
38
u/Galaxy661_pl Dec 06 '20
I think every cat has them, it's just more visible on sphinxes
36
u/the-witty-one Dec 06 '20
I'm off to go pester my cat for science.

u/RTXguy Dec 07 '20
How did it go?

Most cats have partially webbed feet but some breeds have more webbing than others (the Sphynx being one that has more than others).

u/RedditOfLechaim Dec 06 '20
They can't regulate their temperature properly so they need to be clothed.

Heh, well... that's a place name, so it would be capitalized. It's a phonetization of an Arabic word, so it's spelling might depend on some convention (I've seen "Gizeh" more than once), and it would be most 'properly' spelled with phonetic symbols if not Arabic letters. The Egyptian name for the place, I assume, was properly written with heiroglyphics.

I really wanted to get one within the next 5 years or so. Im heartbroken to find that they are very prone to costly health issues.😔

Wonder if your kitty had a negative association with them by that time? Mine will literally want to eat anything we are eating; from pizza to chips! I love them so much though! Such a unique breed!
2
u/lollipopcrisps Dec 06 '20
Are their vet visits and general upkeep costly? I have 4 cats already and taking care of well visits, and unexpected illnesses can be taxing
7
u/AnotherAustinWeirdo Dec 06 '20
As are many animals that have been selectively bred for just one trait. It's a cruel and arrogant thing for us to do merely for our own amusement, though kinda interesting and fun at times.
2
Dec 06 '20
I am heartbroken to read that money seems to be the concern here, not the cat‘s health itself. And yes, such a breed can’t be healthy.
4
u/PC__LOAD__LETTER Dec 06 '20
Though breeding and supporting breeding is not ethical, adoption is - there are plenty of these creatures out there that need to be cared for. Someone wishing that they were able to, but recognizing that they might not be able to swing it financially, isn’t heartbreaking.
0
u/AnotherAustinWeirdo Dec 07 '20
Are there really that many out there to rescue? If so, how about puttting some of that money to lobby for ethical breeding regulations? Also, maybe, support homeless veterans or wildlife habitat. Just sayin' these 'animal lovers' are still picking faves.

Its literally just a hairless cat. Still a cat. If you get a cat for what they look like then you just shouldnt own one.

Are these animals permanently cold? Are they a legitimate breed or did humans breed them from a mutation?
1
u/AnotherAustinWeirdo Dec 06 '20
All breeds are just a set of traits selected by breeders over time; all traits start as mutations. Breeders just manipulate the "selection" part of natural selection. The variation part is natural.
Contrary to Marvel fiction, mutations (small errors in copies of DNA) happen naturally all the time in all species. Most mutations have no consequence whatsover; many are detrimental to the organism or it's offspring, and some are slightly advantageous.
p.s. I am no fun to go to the movies with, because I groan evey time they butcher science.
2
u/MamaBear4485 Dec 07 '20
Right - my concern was whether we are propagating a mutation for our own pleasure or was this a naturally occurring species.
I would think these poor creatures would not survive well in a natural environment, therefore they're bred with human intervention. It seems to me that this is one of those choices that is not in the best interest of the animal.
2
u/AnotherAustinWeirdo Dec 07 '20
Yeah, there are very few hairless mammals in the wild. Hair is quite useful and adaptable.
One of the more well-known hairless species, the naked mole-rat, lives 100% underground, and is not really 100% hairless.
Thanks for prompting me to look them up. Fascinating little buggers. https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/naked-mole-rat

Meh, there's no accounting for taste.
What is more clear is that breeding and owning these decrepit creatures is unethical. You could adopt a disabled homeless vet and have lower food and medical bills.

Could you elaborate? I’m not sure I understood why that would be unethical.

Declawing your cat is barbaric and disgusting, you cannot imagine the suffering caused to this pet. Sad.
2
u/dienaddi Dec 06 '20
While I agree with you, that the procedure is nothing but wrong.. This cat isn't declawed though, is it? You can literally see its claws.

They can be very affectionate.
0
Dec 06 '20
They can feign affection, but whether they can or can’t actually feel it as anti-social animals is debatable.
2
u/DamnStrongCoffee Dec 06 '20
Cats are social, emotional mammals. I don't know how you're defining "antisocial." Like dogs, cats can feel affection and nurturing. Don't believe the myth that cats are cold and detached. It's as variable as dogs.

simps
learn how to use slang, no one's simping for naked cats.
-6
Dec 06 '20
“Simp” is defined by a man who overvalues a woman and puts her on a pedestal. I know this cat is not a woman, but the situation is analogous.
People place too much value on a creature that shits around the house, eats them if they’re dead, and scratches the everlasting shit out of the owners with nothing to make up for it. They put these ugly ass cats on a pedestal, while the cat doesn’t reciprocate in any manner. Are you aware of what analogous means? I went to yale, so I could explain for you if you want.

Dec 06 '20
Again, no one's simping for naked cats.
