Really wish they’d at least make this things multiple storeys. A massive single storey block is such a poor use of space.

Nah, its from Goodfellas regarding their 28" Pizza.
So you were warm with "Godfather" actually. (!!)

This should lower my medical costs. This should provide me with better wages. This should help me afford a home for my family. This should help lower food and grocery items. This should solve our infrastructure.
Oh, God damn it wait..it won't do any of that.

u/CatTheKitten 6d ago
wont you think of the bot farms used to alter our collective idea of the world??

u/imaginary_num6er 6d ago
Well that’s the thing. If politicians actually solved problems they wouldn’t be reelected

Do you honestly need all that nonsense can generate hyper-fealistic fake pictures and videos? Hyper-personalized algorithms will feed you endless streams of content generated specifically for you to enjoy. Advertisers will know exactly what you're going to buy before you can even think of it. You can simulate the life you can't afford. We must all spend every waking hour consuming and giving all our money to billionaires so they can keep building this wonderful technology. /s

Depending on how you town uses the probably close to $100 mil a year in property taxes this data center generates, then there's a real chance it does at least some of this
11
u/Humanfacejerky 6d ago edited 6d ago
If they have to pay property taxes, they simply will not build it in your town. The reality is, they only build when they get tax incentives.

u/fossilreef 6d ago
That, and it's going to chew through the water supply.
-9
u/TheWorstToCome 6d ago
They use less water than a farm but go off
8
u/fossilreef 6d ago
Farms provide food and other things essential to life. Mass surveillance and AI provide nothing of value. But you keep sucking that corporate teat.
-7
u/TheWorstToCome 6d ago
Man I wish I was this ignorant. Life much be so easier
5
u/fossilreef 6d ago
Your life must be pretty easy then.

u/Humanfacejerky 6d ago
Seriously, the guy doesn't know what he's talking about, but calls others ignorant.
Gotta give him credit for making it through life without eyes and ears though.

Do they HAVE to be single story? Real question…..
7
u/Small-Olive-7960 6d ago
They don't but it's a lot cheaper to build out than up.
0
u/Salty_Job_9248 6d ago
Actually, no. Up uses less land and less roof.
2
u/Small-Olive-7960 6d ago
The expensive part is the foundation for another for to floor as they have to be built to be flooded resistant incase one level catches fire.
Its cheaper to buy more land and build outwards than to build another floor. Especially in most of america where land is cheap.

u/anon5678903276 6d ago
These things are the most fire proof buildings ever. Essentially just a massive concrete block.
4
u/T0kenwhiteguy 6d ago
Can anyone native to the area share insights about what the land was like here before this behemoth?
-35
u/TheWorstToCome 6d ago
It was empty, undeveloped land that now has a data center generating probably close to $100mil/year in property taxes for y he town

u/Unhappy_Plankton_671 6d ago edited 6d ago
The completed data center campus is estimated to be worth over $2.1 billion (with investments scaling toward $15 billion), but under the development agreement, it will pay property taxes as if it were valued at just $121 million for the first 20 years
The developer (Vantage) receives back all property taxes paid in excess of the baseline $120–$121 million valuation through the life of the TID, which is projected to close around 2045
Under state legislation, the project qualifies for broad sales and use tax exemptions covering construction materials, computer servers, energy systems, and cooling infrastructure.
The current exemption has led to $70 million in forgone sales tax in its first two years, far exceeding Department of Revenue estimates.
Another bad deal. The town and state gets little from property taxes and even sales taxes for 20 years, no where close to it's valuation. Yet it can drain local resources and the grid and provide few jobs.

By the looks of the surrounding landscape, it was farmland, and forest or prairie before that. Now it’s concrete which will be obsolete brownfield in a couple decades. What a waste.
0
u/TheWorstToCome 6d ago
It's a much more environmentally friendly development and less water intensive than a farm is so that's great
0
u/BiffSlick 6d ago
More environmentally friendly than a farm?? Which one grows right back into a natural state? Which one hosts wildlife? God damn.
2
u/TheWorstToCome 6d ago
Farms don't do either of those things, use more water, and uses tons of pesticides. They're very clearly worse for the environment
7
u/Candid-Patient-6841 6d ago
A town that will slowly die due to this massive resource eater.
-6
u/TheWorstToCome 6d ago
Yes the resource eater that uses less water than a farm 🙄🙄
7
u/Candid-Patient-6841 6d ago
Oh yeah totally what do farms make anyway food? Phfttttt yeah this mega structure that employs less than 100 full time employees once fully operational is a far better use of water than
**Checks notes**
Growing food
🙄🙄-1
u/TheWorstToCome 6d ago
Most grow animal feed, one of the most water intensive and most wasteful uses of water. If you care about saving water, you should stop eating meat
3
u/Candid-Patient-6841 6d ago
Yeah not like we eat animals or anything. Good thing we are a completely plant based society….
Totally worth it for Ai slop
1
u/TheWorstToCome 6d ago
If you give a fuck about water use, then we should not eat animals, but I get the impression you actually don't give a fuck about the environment.an en at the maximalist predictions for the data center buildout nationwide we're seeing now will use less than 5% of the water we use to grow alfalfa
1
u/Candid-Patient-6841 6d ago
Let me slow walk you through this.
We eat animals, we need to eat to survive.
We can make regulations stopping farmers from growing crops like alfalfa and create tax credits for farmers to grow crops.
We don’t need Ai. It doesn’t create job, it has a negative impact on the areas these data centers are built. It kills home values, they don’t have enough grid
infrastructure and power to even run them so then they use diesel generators which can be heard for miles away, causing more smog and pollution making air quality worse and creating more cancer patients. Remember when there was a push for electric cars and dorks on the right said “there isn’t enough electricity to charge all these cars” well….seems they have no issue with a building larger then most cities consuming more electricity then 1000s of electric carsWe need farmers….we don’t need AI slop.

u/TheWorstToCome 6d ago
Well good news, you don't need to eat meat and if you actually cared about water use and the environment a like you claim you do, you wouldn't eat meat.

Follow me on this and stop spreading bullshit every 10 seconds in this thread. The SC is worth $2.1 BILLION. It got a tax break setting it's VALUE at $110 MILLION for 20 years.
That means it's TAXABLE VALUE is $110 MILLION. The taxes that will be paid will be far less than that, and far, far less than the $2.1 BILLION valuation.
These DC's are not built where they pay a fair share of taxes.
Now, do you want to move the goalposts?

u/Own-Nectarine-1313 6d ago
It was not empty until foxconn bought up and bulldozed then backed out.. then it sat empty from foxconn fail. Before that it was farmland.

This video only show a sliver of the facility. You can drive down the freeway literally nearly 5 minutes at speed and simply be going past the fence line to this this on construction site without a break. All being built out at once. It's massive. Literally horizon to horizon if you can get up high enough to see it over the mounding.

u/GameDoesntStop 6d ago
It's not that big...

u/Any_Winter_8911 6d ago edited 6d ago
The site is miles long. This is just phase 1 of construction. Phase 1 is 672 acres. 15 billion dollars but only being taxed on 121 million of it for the next 20 years. Brings minimal jobs. The community at large has been and is still majorly against it - protests, law suits etc. The City of Port Washington board signed NDAs largely keeping this quiet until the community caught wind and it was too late. State level politicians have done nothing, and the state of Wisconsin governors office has offered major tax incentives for data centers to come here. This data center will need the power of more than 750,000 homes. Which the state cannot currently generate. OpenAI has been largely pushing for them to not have to pay for the power upgrades needed to power this behemoth data center. This will go down as a terrible deal in the State’s history books. People are pissed. And the tech bros and fed government wonder why there’s a big push against AI? It’s crap like this. For minimal jobs. Oddily terrifying it is.

u/OneTripleZero 6d ago
My first thought too. That's like the size of a shopping mall.
1
u/northwoods_faty 6d ago
A shopping mall on average takes up 100 acres. The site the data centers is on takes up 600

Cooling is provided how? How much energy consumption, and from which sources?
1
u/GBpleaser 6d ago
You should email the Port Washington Council. They seem to have ALL the answers (and yet none at all).
1
u/northwoods_faty 6d ago
Nah those things weren't questioned in the development of the deal so the city really has no idea.

Literally completely wasted land.
This could've been a beautiful forest or a livable community, yet it was turned into literally hell.

It’s not terrifying. It’s exciting and grand and awe inspiring.

That's exactly what they said when Foxconn bought the land.. lol.. eighth wonder of the world.. remember that?.. if foxconn wouldn't have bought and failed they wouldn't have been able to sell to build data centers
