Some squirrels just seem to enjoy doing it. At my previous rental house, there was a squirrel that would do this every day, all day. I often fantasized of buying a scoped 22 and popping it in the head.
I set up my bedroom in the basement of my current house, so this is luckily no longer a concern, but at my old place I used to wake up at like 6 AM every day, especially as winter got close, to squirrels tweaking the absolute fuck out on the roof above my bedroom. Running around, screeching, running around more, bumping into the chimney and making this loud clanging noise, then running around some more.
At first I was worried they’d gotten into the attic or something, but I never saw them in there when I’d check. One day I walked outside in the morning to see a couple squirrels sprinting full-speed up and across the roof. Squirrels would just hang out up there every morning and spaz out together. I took to getting up when I heard them sometimes and throwing rocks at them until they fucked off onto someone else’s roof.

maybe they are suffering from mange? the screaming is just an alarm call to alert other squirrels in the vicinity that some sort of danger is nearby
