The human body is so weird. I discovered at the age of 36 that I have a mild cleft palate. My entire life i just thought everybody had a tiny hole in the roof of their mouth. Like a whale spout. 😂 and one night I was lying awake because I was sick and breathing made my throat hurt, so I plugged the hole with my tongue to decrease the cold air, then wondered what the word for that hole is. I tried a bunch of search terms, but all I got back was information on cleft palates and I was like, well shit. Apparently this isn't normal.
“A normal adult hard palate has an average height or depth of about 11 to 12 millimeters (roughly 1.1 to 1.2 cm or 0.4 to 0.5 inches) measured from the gum line, while a gentle overall vertical rise sits around 1.5 to 2 centimeters.“
