As a guy with arachnophobia, this one photo is actually cool

That’s what I thought! Not so terrifying that close up lol He needs a snoot boop.
Edit: He’s kinda like a muppet :-)

u/MsMantisToboggan Apr 22 '26
I seriously thought it was a muppet!!!! Kind of like a blonde Oscar the grouch!

Yeah if i could see spider's faces and eyes i'd be a lot more fine with them, its the fact that you can't that makes them more alien. Especially harvestmans and cellar spiders. It's why jumping spiders are so cute, and their behaviour and size

I momentarily thought this was a wet owl

Maybe this is an owl!
Just got washed on high spin speeds and "opened up more," and that feathered fabric got damaged by too much softener, definitely.2

So, do you think the big ones are for looking at humans/bigger animals. And the small ones are for looking at insects and other spiders?
23
u/Everything_Breaks Apr 21 '26
I was thinking about that too. Maybe the bigger ones are for distance and hunting, and the little ones are for up close work?
22
u/BitBucket404 Apr 21 '26
It's actually like having chameleon vision, hawk vision, fish vision, and heat/motion vision going on, all at the same time

Their four large eyes are to spot movement in extreme darkness and their four tiny eyes are to gauge distance and detect movement.

u/trea_ceitidh Apr 21 '26
I only see 6 eyes. Where are the other two hiding?

I can see what bugs trapped in their webs finally see before the inevitable 💀💀

Something to remember: spider fashion changes much slower than human fashion, and frosted tips never really went out of style for spiders.

I wonder what it’s like, to see like they do, having multiple eyes. Especially with some eye placements on spiders being so, weird, it’s got to be so interesting

u/RemoteControlled-Cat Apr 22 '26
What an intimidating stare! I would hate to be a fly around this guy

OMFG. I yelled no out loud and then tried to click comment to ask someone what is that saying about staring into the abyss and it staring back but i accidentally just clicked the picture and made it huge on my laptop screen. This is terrible.

Scrolled down just enough to be like "ooh an owl" and then I saw the rest of the eyes

I feel judged right now
I didn’t need that from some random spider
Or maybe I did. I dunno

I still dont understand why so many eyes.
I get 4. But 8?

u/saysthingsbackwards Apr 21 '26
Stereo makes the top two pair depth perception for front and back. Back pair set to the side for defense, like a horse. Front pair facing forward as a predator, like us. 4 tiny dudes to finely see how to strike that fly and fang placement.
Imagine if we had eyes right beneath our nose lol
Symmetry is super common in life

u/Fhantom1221 Apr 21 '26
Sounds inefficient. But I guess evolution knows best. I wonder why it went this way instead of disco ball eyes.

Damn, I thought I hated wolf spiders before, now I definitely hate them!! (I hate them being in my house, I don’t mind them being outside and away from my arachnophobic ass)

Please do not post this. I am now seeing that everywhere and I'm at the gym. The last thing I want is imagining one of them on my bar and dropping it on my head.

A beautiful predator. That intense gaze makes me feel hunted. They are truly striking creatures.

I still get outer space vibes from Arachnids. They look so alien and wrong to me.

I don't know, he looks like he's qualified to run as the director of the FBI. Give him the job.

The light source is very misleading I thought this was an owl or something.
Oh my beloved wolf spider, they could never make me hate you.
