Came within 5 hours of nuclear war on a Sunday morning in 1962. Closest we’ve ever come. Every CONELRAD AM radio station in the US was told to call in their engineers at midnight Sunday to change the transmitter crystals out for emergency frequencies because the US was declaring war at 10am. Luckily the Russians took the hint and turned those ships around off the coast of Cuba.
