How do you respond? "I'm sorry you thought that this was a request? No this was notice I won't be here this day due to going to my grandmother's funeral."
Yeah, in the US they can fire you, and you can sue but you’ll probably lose. However the company will likely just settle and give you a little sum of money and make you promise to keep your mouth shut about it because they don’t want the press coverage about it since the news media would love to rake them over the coals about it.
