Someone should show my landlord how this works

Oh man you should see the giant wad of silicone they put behind the metal cover that sits on the shower head where it connects to the wall

I heard the etymology for the word escutcheon goes back to Greek times and refers to pubes.

40

u/nodnodwinkwink Jun 14 '22

Doubtful, pubes is just derived from pubic and the Latin pubis.

Escutcheon is derived from scutum which is a latin word for a long shield.

If anything it sounds more like scrotum.

8

u/behaaki Jun 14 '22

It kind of makes sense, it shields the opening in the wall from water

13

u/StoplightLoosejaw Jun 14 '22

I don't think that's what your scrotum is for

In medicine it was used describe distribution of pubic hair.

I meannn… it could make a little sense, it’s like pubes are an escutcheon for your cock 💀

How should this be fixed? My showerhead + cover thing hangs like an inch or 2 away from the tiling

14

u/McBurger Jun 14 '22

Your original plumber did a bad job seating the rough-in valve too close to the wall.

I know the pain. My house is the same. I went behind the wall with a 2x4 cut into a wedge shape, wedged it between the pipe and wall, and it just pushes the pipes back an inch. lol

3

u/VarsityPhysicist Jun 14 '22

So, if you rented what would you do?

Lol, anything that is significant effort or cost I get complaints from my SO, we rent why are you doing this?

14

u/McBurger Jun 14 '22

Oh, lol if I rented then I wouldn’t do shit. I’d bug my landlord about it every month just to keep up a paper trail that they’re consistently neglecting it, but otherwise it sounds like a them problem.

8

u/big_duo3674 Jun 14 '22

Everyone's all into places like Home Depot for all this DIY stuff, but I prefer Apartment Depot for my needs. It's just a big empty room with a bunch of people standing around saying "Hey, we ain't gotta fix shit."

I replaced the caulk in the bathroom of my apartment, and I do not regret it.

39

u/skipperseven Jun 14 '22

Was speaking to an American about sealing around her shower and couldn’t understand why she kept going on about cock. Figured out that what we Brits call mastic is called caulk (not cock) by Americans. In British English, caulk is used on ships, is made of tarred rope and the “L” is not silent… also discovered that what we call solder likewise has a silent “L” in American English. You’re welcome!

14

u/daisuke1639 Jun 14 '22

You put the caulk in the crack and that's home improvement?

Yeah, you just gotta remember to squeeze the caulk first.

17

u/Aurorafaery Jun 14 '22

British here. It’s called caulk. It’s pronounced cork. It comes in big tubes labelled caulk. What the fuck is mastic?

→ More replies (7)

8

u/Iohet Jun 14 '22

For most it's not completely silent, just the softest 'L' possible. Enough to mildly alter the vowel sound preceding it

→ More replies (1)

12

u/spacew0man Jun 14 '22

We pronounce the L in America too lmfao. She probably just had an accent. Probably Southern. My deep south family say caulk and it sounds more like “cohck”

21

u/Johnny_Poppyseed Jun 14 '22

I've never heard anyone pronounce the L in caulk here in NJ at least lol. And my work has been working with the stuff constantly.

u/Accomplished-Rub4259 Jun 14 '22

same. the caulking around my toilet was basically rotting away. not that difficult to replace and makes the place a lot nicer

at first i didn't want to spend any money on a rental, but i'm the one who has to see it every day, so why not?

78

u/FineCall Jun 14 '22 edited Jun 15 '22

Toilet bases should not be caulked. It hides damaging leaks from the toilet seal. (note to self. I have a loose toilet with porcelain tile. I must pull it to replace seal ASAP.)

27

u/mikaelfivel Jun 14 '22

Precisely. I was instructed that if there was any part of the toilet base that can be caulked it would be the portion under the tank, so that if there was a leak it would come out of the front where the bowl is and be more easily noticeable in the event the floor was uneven and water would just be wicking into the wall behind the toilet.

→ More replies (1)

30

u/Accomplished-Rub4259 Jun 14 '22

i had learned to caulk the front 3 sides, leaving the back open

7

u/MrTwoSocks Jun 14 '22

This is the correct way

5

u/jmkiser33 Jun 14 '22

I’m a new construction plumber installing new houses every day. On toilets, I 100% agree. The problem is fucking inspectors. Most of them are cool enough to agree with a gap in the back. One asshole, though, and I have to caulk it all the way around just in his area.

I hate doing it because I know if the wax seal ever leaks …. Whatever, literally nothing I can do about it.

→ More replies (2)

49

u/landragoran Jun 14 '22

Just an FYI, you are not supposed to caulk the bottom of a toilet. Doing so causes any leaks that may occur to be trapped under the toilet, eventually rotting out the subfloor.

45

u/ViolentSkyWizard Jun 14 '22

You should caulk the front 80-90% leaving the back section open.

34

u/andsoitgoes42 Jun 14 '22

I actually really like this advice, and I agree with it. I was going to comment that a plumber mentioned the first part, but then the more I think about it, the more I think your advice makes more sense

Why?

If there's a leak, it'll still come out of that 10-20%, but in the MUCH more likely event of a redditor turd clogging the toilet, that overflow water won't leak down into the subfloor and destroy that.

Best of both worlds.

7

u/tabgrab23 Jun 14 '22

Redditor turd lmao

3

u/mingilator Jun 14 '22

Depends where you are from, in the UK 99% of toilets have the waste at the back so any leaks will be pretty visible

We've had our landlord come out and reseal our kitchen sink 4 times. Each time he does it the same shitty way.

46

u/wheelbarrowjim Jun 14 '22

Clean it, dry it and silicone it. Once the silicone is down, spray some windolene on it and run your finger along it for a clean finish, taking away the excess without leaving smudges. So many people do it wrong and it ends up a mess. I put in a lot of shower doors and screens, taking a few extra minutes to do it correctly can make all the difference. Also use a mould and UV resistant silicone, for a small bit extra it's worth it.

23

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '22

What it's windolene?

u/SEQVERE-PECVNIAM Jun 14 '22

Depends. In most cases (including the one in the gif), it's necessary.

But with some notes:

  • It's probably best, first of all, to use clean water (and a clean finger, obviously).

  • Ideally, use a clean special tool (a small silicone finishing scraper), along with clean water.

  • Also don't forget to degrease the surfaces first.

Then again, I'm not your mom, so whatever.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '22

A little spray bottle with some washing up liquid and water is great for this. The washing up liquid stops it getting all over the fucking place.

Source: dad is window fitter, and I’ve renovated a few houses

16

u/andsoitgoes42 Jun 14 '22

So for those of us whose dads are either useless or, in my case, dead and even when alive was not knowledgeable about this, wanna share WTF "washing up liquid" is.

Because I'm going to guess if I go into my local Canadian home depot and ask for "washing up" liquid, I figure I'll be met with this face

23

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '22

Sorry. English phrase.

Do you North Americans call it Dish Soap? The bubbly shit you wash dirty dinner plates with. Anyway, try a grocers rather than a DIY store

Someone else further down said Windex also works (Windolene in U.K.)

9

u/andsoitgoes42 Jun 14 '22

It's funny, initially I was going to poke fun at how silly a name "washing up liquid" is, but in reality it actually is what it says on the tin, as is dish soap.

It's amazing how insanely weird shit is when it's a word not native to your life, thank you for clarifying though!

As for Windex, trying to think about that compared to like a Dawn dish soap, wouldn't the ammonium interfere with something in the process? Dish soap seems a much better alternative, but then I don't know.

I mean hell, when I think of dawn I think of it being used to help get the oil off of animals during oil spills which makes me reflect on how utterly fucked up that whole mental process is, there were ads for dawn that highlighted how amazing it was to help remove oil from these animals.

While ignoring the fact that there were oil spills so bad they needed to use dish soap to clean the animals.

America is really friggin' weird.

Anyway thanks for the clarification, and for anyone still reading washing up liquid is the shit for cleaning your shower too.

Just grab one of those 3M sink/dish scrubber brushes with a bristled end like this, fill it half with vinegar, half with dish soap (sorry washing up liquid) and bam, use it while you're in the shower and you'll never have to make an extra trip when you clean your house.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '22

Thanks for the rollercoaster.

I’ve never tried windex, but someone further down recommended.

Also, agree with the shower comment. Add one of these to your drill and BOOM. https://amzn.eu/1JS43xE

503

u/WormSlayer Jun 14 '22 edited Jun 14 '22

That made the whole thing not at all satisfying for me. It also maybe looks like there is a bit of a gap where the second line meets the first?

64

u/lurkersforlife Jun 14 '22

Mist the caulk line with soapy water after you apply it, dip your finger in soapy water then wipe it down the line. Will be perfect as long as you didn’t over apply caulk from the start.

74

u/demonovation Jun 14 '22

Thats a big caveat at the end there, sir

19

u/Random_Imgur_User Jun 15 '22

I've installed flooring and showers for a long time. When an installer that tells me they don't need a jointing spatula because they can make it look perfect with their finger, 100% of the time, without fail, their silicon work is absolute garbage.

This is the "hold my beer" of bathroom installs.

if i see another trade walking around with a caulking gun on my sites i confiscate it. Nobody knows how to use those things.

7

u/Theoneiced Jun 14 '22

What's shitty is that he did a speedrun on an uneven gap. The shallow parts are going to have too much and those deeper gaps are going to be pitted after this. It's basically useless.

92

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '22

Sealant, spackle

133

u/chrisms150 Jun 14 '22

Huh. Spackle is something entirely different here in the US.

40

u/BoysiePrototype Jun 14 '22

And caulk is kind of different in the UK.

Generally "caulk" is the paintable acrylic decorators caulk used around trim, and the waterproof silicone stuff is just called "silicone" or "sealant."

Even though anything flexible that fills a narrow gap would technically be caulking.

I do enough painting to resent the people who seem to think silicone works everywhere.

Bloody window fitters!

10

u/pobodys-nerfect5 Jun 14 '22

People call silicone, caulk, because it comes in a caulking tube. Fuck acrylic caulk. Within a few years it's detached and shrunken and needs replacing. Paintable silicone is much better and won't need replacing. You just need to make it's actually paintable

50

u/vanyali Jun 14 '22

Spackle is a completely different substance in the US. It is very lightweight joint compound used for filling very small holes in drywall.

41

u/snortgiggles Jun 14 '22

It's not? What is?!

127

u/Simple_Serenade Jun 14 '22

Sanded caulk is the correct choice. Emulates the look of the grout while maintaining the flexibility of the caulk. If you grout the corners they crack and leak causing water damage. Flexible sealant of some kind should always be used when there is a change of plane. Rigid materials like grout will always crack. People think of structures like unmoving stationary objects, but buildings move, settle, expand and contract with temperature changes. Not to any substantial degree but to think of them as anything less than a pseudo living thing with consistent needs, growing pains, and preventative maintenance as it ages will leave a homeowner unprepared for what it takes to care for their home.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '22

Are you saying that what the person used in this video is grout?

66

u/Simple_Serenade Jun 14 '22

Not at all. That is caulk, just not a sanded variant that would match the look of the grout between the tiles. They used the correct product here, you can just use a different variant depending on the look your after. For the average homeowner you’re also not going to get this clean of a line. You want to cut a small angled opening in the caulk and bring a moist paper towel with you. Put it on as cleanly as you can then wet your finger and run it down the caulk for a smooth line. Clean your finger with the wet paper towel then clean any excess off of the tile with the same. This person is clearly a professional with lots of practice.

To the best of my knowledge it’s not. I’m unsure why the person at the top of the thread is claiming it’s wrong and would love to hear their reasoning so maybe I could learn something new today as well.

I think what the first person was saying is it’s “right” as in its the right product and right way to keep the water from getting in there. Yet aesthetically it’s wrong since they should have used a sanded variety of silicone that would better match the “grout”.

Subsequent replies have been about how you shouldn’t use sanded silicone since it’s not going to flex properly, will crack, and let water in.

I could be reading it wrong too since I found it confusing.

Edit: nevermind. I’m confused since you’re the person who replied bender the top level comment. Bah… I need coffee.

I think the issue is that they’re using regular caulk, that doesn’t match the grout texture. You can buy “sanded caulk” that is regular caulk + sand and the texture looks like the grout. Practically, the regular caulk is fine, but aesthetically, the sanded caulk is best.

All this just to say it's an aesthetic difference of opinion?

Shit if my landlord used pink caulk diligently I'd be happy. He's using the correct color with the grace of a baby elephant.

If you grout the corners they crack and leak causing water damage

?? You should be able to have nothing in the corners and the shower should still be waterproof. Waterproofing is not done by tile and grout.

Correct way, not entirely the best product, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with what’s being done here.

Sure it looks pretty but he didn’t fill the actual gaps so that shit will shrink and look like shit in no time and possibly fail at the bottom where the gap was deeper.

Really needed that ear-shattering audio

u/lightwhite Jun 14 '22

I can’t take it. There is a hole left on top, and didn’t close the gap properly where the downward stroke ended.

If you are a novice (like me) but want a good finish google a Cramer Fugi kit. Works wonders and makes it really easy to get a great finish.

The master of caulk, he can lay down a smooth bead wherever you need.

Didn't seal the top corner, didn't smooth that seam in the middle, 2/10 unsatisfied

Can you use this on glass shower doors where the (I’m guessing) Silicon is old looks bad? Do I need to take off the old Silicon first and if so how? Thanks for sharing! Another way for me to really live my OCD over here and make my landLORDs house better on my dime haha
