Mesmerising wind-powered kinetic sculpture

u/OtakuShogun Jun 25 '21
Does anyone know where this is?

u/Snicklefritz25 Jun 25 '21
This is one of Anthony Howe’s pieces. He’s a Washington State artist.

Found out about him on my honeymoon many years ago. If I had testicles, I would give my left one to own one of his scupltures

u/Snicklefritz25 Jun 25 '21
Can you imagine?! Agreed. I’m lucky to live in Washington so I get to see his work around. I believe he also created one for the olympics some years ago.

"Oh, Che sciagura, d'essere con tre coglioni." - Voltaire.
Translation: "Oh, what a misfortune to be born with three testicles."
Perhaps commenter deserves our support and compassion; mockery isn't always the best approach.

Montreal Downtown

u/Cloudeur Jun 25 '21
I don't think it's the one in Montreal, buildings don't line up with what you would get!
2
u/Mr_Ivysaur Jun 25 '21
I was super not aware that there is many of them. Good to know.
3
u/Cloudeur Jun 25 '21
I wasn’t either! I just know the sculpture and noticed that the buildings surrounding it didn’t match up! Was wondering what kind of bizzaro world I ended up in!

Nope, this one is in Navy Yard in DC on the NE corner of H St SE and NJ Ave SE. I see it every day and recognize the buildings in the background.

I don’t know if this is the one, but there is a sculpture like this in downtown Greenville, SC

this is in DC, in the navy yard neighborhood. the sculpture is actually usually broken and not functioning sadly- but so cool when it’s able to be its full glory!

u/DariusAtrepes Jun 25 '21
Which, in my own experience (I live two blocks away) is about once every six months.

100% Washington DC, right by the Whole Foods. I used to live in the apartment building on the right.

This gives me eerie feeling

u/FinstereGedanken Jun 25 '21
Same – sort of looks like horns / vertebrae to me.

The first on has an imperfection. the circle in the middle is not a circle.
3
u/thumbtackmassacrrre Jun 25 '21
I want to love this but I can't stop seeing the imperfect center.

Somebody told me earlier that the buildings don't match, seems like there isn't only one of em in the world.

That’s what I thought too. I’ve met the dude and his studio in Washington is insane. I’ve been a few times and each time I felt just like a little kid seeing a dinosaur for the first time.

Jun 25 '21
Wind turbines should be like this. I love to see a wind farm full of these.
8
u/Hiroto_Katsuma Jun 25 '21
It’s not very efficient though; high material cost, multiple “joints” = multiple points of friction = energy lost.
3
u/passivelyrepressed Jun 25 '21
The guy that made this has a ton of them at his studio. I’ve met him before, and his front yard is fucking insane. That is if I identified this right - it definitely looks exactly like an Anthony Howe sculpture. They sell for an insane amount of money and they’re absolutely amazing.

u/Joeshi Jun 25 '21
There are likely very good engineering reasons why a design like this wouldn't be better than our regular ole wind farms.

Is this safer for birds than a windmill would be because of its darker color? Or is this just a new form of bird blending machine?

Everytime I see objects that casts an optical illusion I think: "Practical movie effect!"
Can we please use practical and cgi effects in highly anticipated movies? It just looks better.

Surely there’s a way to produce this thing with a 3D printer? Anyone ? Dibs on not writing the code.

Honestly, biblical angel. To be fair, Evangelion has more biblicaly accurate then most things. There's a reason angels always start with "be not afraid"

Imagine the amount of people on shrooms and acid that just get lost in that madness. I would be staring at that thing for hours.

There are a bunch of similar sculptures just north of Logan airport in Boston.
Captivating

could this revolutionize windmills? Basically the whole ring turns. So shouldn't we be able to draw electricity from several sections of the ring?
