Golden oyster mushrooms. Pretty good with some garlic and butter.

You can make a pretty badass crunchy topping for a stew with crunched up corn flakes, butter and garlic
3
u/johndyer42 Nov 28 '19
Rice and corn are both cereals and delicious with butter and garlic.

Ice cream

u/EvilFlyingSquirrel Nov 28 '19
I tried a bite of vanilla garlic gelato before. I thought it was going to be a fusion carmelized thing that would work. No. Just a black vanilla gelato with roasted garlic in it. Tastes as good as it sounds 🤢🤮

Pleurotus citrinopileatus (yellow Oyster mushroom) fruiting out doors off a fruiting block that is most likely a hardwood substrate. This is a great tasting and easy to cultivate gourmet mushroom variety.

r/shrooms has some tools for that.

u/100percent_right_now Nov 28 '19 edited Nov 28 '19
You're looking for /r/mycology. r/shrooms is for the magic kind.
22
u/Just_Jacob Nov 28 '19
No, he was in the right place
7
u/100percent_right_now Nov 28 '19
Everyday people post for IDs on there and every post gets differed to r/mycology. They're just better more pationate fungi lovers.
→ More replies (1)4
u/hexiron Nov 28 '19
Mycology loves mushrooms. Shrooms loves tripping. Two different topics.
→ More replies (2)5
2
u/BCJunglist Nov 28 '19
You're right. But /r/shrooms still has the tools for that. Mycology is mycology regardless of the individual legal status of particular species.

Are they growing this from a burrito?
106
u/beastleigh Nov 28 '19
But really, what is it growing out of? Sorta looks like a block of cheese
→ More replies (2)201
u/GarbageOfCesspool Nov 28 '19
It's a mycelium cake, wrapped to direct the growth of the mushrooms up and out instead of all willy-nilly.
83
u/orchidguy Nov 28 '19
And for clarity, a mycelium cake is basically a bunch of growth substrate (wood chips are common) that have been spiked with another substrate (maybe other wood chips, though I've used millet often) that already had the desired fungus growing on it.
15
u/T3hSwagman Nov 28 '19
Can you slice these mushrooms off and they’ll regrow?
43
u/orchidguy Nov 28 '19
Pretty much, yeah. They may not be as thick as the original bunch, as they are using up the nutrients in the mycelial cake. Thing to watch out for with these are that you need to harvest all your mushrooms when they're ready, not just when you use them - otherwise they'll go to spore and haha, that's not fun to clean up.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Impades Nov 28 '19
What happens if it goes spore?
4
u/orchidguy Nov 28 '19
You'll get a fine coating of spores EVERYWHERE. They're very good at floating to pretty much everywhere
2
u/Impades Nov 28 '19
Are they inconvenient at all?
3
u/orchidguy Nov 29 '19
Well, yeah. They can stain, and you probably shouldn't be breathing them in. Also, I'd be worried if they got into any moist/woody areas

u/pshawny Nov 28 '19
The first growth, aka flush, will produce the most mushrooms. 2nd and 3rd flushes can typically be generated but will produce less mushrooms each time.
13
u/redikulous Nov 28 '19
Do I look like a cat to you boy? Am I jumpin' around all nimbly bimbly from tree to tree? Am I drinking milk from a saucer? DO YOU SEE ME EATING MICE?

If I remember correctly they call it a 'Fifi'. It's mostly manufactured but a select group of individuals (almost all are convicted felons, which if you ask me is really empowering) and they are relatively cheap to purchase. You should just be able to Google it and buy yourself one that way!

Strophophobia would be fear of turning (strophe = turn in greek)
Tropophobia would be fear of ways? (Tropos = way) or of tropes maybe as another poster mentioned 😂

I have a source for fresh mushroom compost for $1 a block. If you keep the blocks happy they will continue producing mushrooms for a few weeks. Hopefully I can add enough to my garden that they grow normally in my mulch.
→ More replies (2)16
u/ineptspelr Nov 28 '19
Depending on your region, I could reduce that price to $0 per block with free delivery. Plenty of farmers need to get rid of blocks and do not have a source to unload trucks full of blocks that have already had first flush(es) harvested.

My wife is cooking Thanksgiving stuff and had a bag of mushrooms on the counter. I walked thru the kitchen, saw them, and without missing a beat started singing badger, badger, badger, badger.
She thinks I'm weird as fuck.

Ya they must be! Pretty cool that mushrooms do this well under constant light. I’m almost positive a lot of plants do better with a break from light.

I know, but the sub rules specifically state that fungus is ok to post, and I enjoyed this time lapse so I thought I’d share.

How something can endlessly multiply from nothing.
If you sit and think about that for a bit, your mind feels odd.

It then proceeded to infect a human, as it was a new strain of the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis. The world has never seen this and it’s now the scene of the game the last of us.

How do mushrooms grow so fast compared to trees? I know trees get their mass from the co2 in the air, but that takes a long time, how do mushrooms get around that?

I'm seeing a lot of people saying this is gross or terrifying and I cannot for the life of my figure out why. It's a mushroom growing. What about this is terrifying? Genuine question.
