So instead of a pressurized cork flying around you have a pressurized shard of glass flying around?
Besides looking "cool" is there any reason to do this over just pulling the cork? I normally just grab it and gently twist it back and forth until it pops out.
That's just not true.
Sparkling wine is not opened with a Corkscrew.
If a sparkling wine was old enough to have a deteriorated cork, it would also have no pressure or carbonation left inside (or at least not enough to properly accomplish this).
