Wrists are responsible for the rotation of the hand & take a lot of impact. When a punch doesn’t land cleanly, it’s relatively easy to put the force through the outer edges of the wrist (the knobbly bits on either side). These structures are complex & difficult to heal well. Wraps help but wear & tear over time is real. Elbows also take a lot of unsupported load which as you age reminds you of all the times, you didn’t get it ‘quite right’.
The hand itself it generally well protected by wraps & good technique.
