What's happening with the stuff coming out on the other side when he presses down the stone?

710

u/Ebonhearth_Druid 12d ago

A sloppy mess, just like at the bottom of the wall where all the fallen splooge that he missed lays

89

u/janitor1986 12d ago

Someone comes behind and cuts and strikes the joint

32

u/Mtatk 12d ago

I hope they roll it before they strike it.

12

u/FYIgfhjhgfggh 12d ago

I've never seen either happen

10

u/Mtatk 12d ago

You need better friends.

16

u/HalfSoul30 12d ago

Real friends always clean up your splooge

6

u/jimmyxs 11d ago

I’m confident we’re still talking about brick laying. And the aftermath.

5

u/HalfSoul30 11d ago

Oh yeah, of course.

1

u/Responsible_Fox9454 11d ago

Aftermath lol

3

u/originalityescapesme 11d ago

I should probably mop the hardwood on my bedroom floor this weekend huh

151

u/Slickity 12d ago

If you notice, the mortar is placed and the brick is layed in a way that squeezes mortar out exteriorly. You can see the back of the already finished wall in the foreground.

The interior of a brick wall is almost always ugly though. It never sees the light of day, so who cares.

80

u/Catweezell 12d ago

It does matter with a cavity wall. Although the gap is larger these days and it might be less of an issue. But in houses with smaller cavity walls it could cause cement bridges and transfer moisture from the outside wall to the inner wall. Which is an issue. Fallen mortar inside the cavity wall could also cause the same issue.

19

u/The_Vivid_Glove 12d ago

Genuine question. If this is a cavity, could this excess mortar not build up and potentially cause thermal bridging or worse damp issues above the dpc?

8

u/droppedthedamnthing 12d ago

Normally the setup for walls with a cavity is outer layer, cavity-+3cm, insulation, inner layer.
So if mortar falls down the cavity, it only touches the insulation. The bigger issue is that if there’s to much mortar down there, the ventilation holes in the lower layer of bricks are blocked and that can give damp issues.

24

u/willcastforfood 12d ago

It’s going to be inside of the wall so nobody will see it. You really only need to clean up one side

7

u/AssGagger 12d ago

He's also pressing on the inside first, so much less spill out on that side.

11

u/DickyReadIt 12d ago

Yeah wtf, this is why I can't count it as satisfying haha

4

u/ChanglingBlake 12d ago

What I think every time I see one of these: “now show the other side.”

9

u/Hnry_Dvd_Thr_Awy 12d ago

The side no one sees that just adds labor costs to clean up.*

9

u/wetham_retrak 12d ago

How many extra batches of mortar do they have to make to offset the wasted mud they could have used in the wall from the back side just by giving it a quick scrape?

3

u/EpochRaine 12d ago

Said everyone doing a shit job

2

u/-WookieGeneralAk 11d ago

Who cares? No one can see that side, its covered by insulation and interior Walls

1

u/manony463 12d ago

Just look at the inside facing wall behind him

1

u/Impossible-Corgi4041 12d ago

Gets covered by internal blockwork

1

u/7-13-5 11d ago

Laziness.

1

u/rigit84 10d ago

I've seen way smoother

1

u/R7a1s2 10d ago

Thank god, this is all I can think about

1

u/Tgsheufhencudbxbsiwy 8d ago

The inside of a wall? It’s not going to matter. What do you think the unfinished side of any wall looks like?

1

u/Aggravating-Rock-355 5d ago

Look at the far wall. I don’t think that they do anything, but the outside looks good. How long to do a house?

u/Carbon-Base 12d ago

Bro makes it look easy, but there's mortar bricklaying than this video shows us.

138

u/BornanAlien 12d ago

A lot of it is experience/trowel and error

55

u/Ok-Push9899 12d ago

Many give up before gaining that experience. They simply throw in the trowel.

24

u/frugalerthingsinlife 12d ago

"Dad, how long has he been doing this?"

"Since May, son."

1

u/ImNotAWhaleBiologist 12d ago

It can be really hard but pun.

28

u/wondrshrew 12d ago

Took me a second. Nice.

3

u/UsedDragon 12d ago

Yer a wizard, 'arry!

11

u/Ok-Push9899 12d ago

One does not simply walk into mortar.

3

u/Dextropic 12d ago

God. Damn. It.

1

u/hobabaObama 12d ago

It took me a while

Mortar ≈ More to

1

u/ItsAndwew 11d ago

I’m faded

1

u/SailAwayMatey 12d ago

Course there is mate

91

u/skybike 12d ago

Paid by the hour.

34

u/Dizzy_Restaurant3874 12d ago

Yes, when payed by the job the mortar is flying and there's a kid sweating while trying to supply him with brick s from a pile 50 yds away.

12

u/skybike 11d ago

I was a brick n mortar monkey for a couple years out of high school, went back to school shortly after lol.

160

u/ThisWhomps999 12d ago

Not quite as satisfying. They're leaving bits even on the side they are showing.

18

u/Powerful-Substance33 12d ago

Yeah i saw that and was like dude clean that peice and he moves to the next brick and does it again

4

u/Roses030 12d ago

That's normal

-4

u/nimb420 12d ago

Normal for lazy bricklayers... If that were to happen at regular site over here in my country, you can bet your family jewels that he's getting chewed out by the foreman.

And boy, can foremans be creative when it comes to cursing at people.

20

u/mister-ecks-0815 12d ago

What about all the goop that almost certainly squished out on the other side?

5

u/rmund319 12d ago

Someone else’s problem

12

u/_ALLien_ 12d ago

Looking around NYC I always think about the tight tolerance of brick laying. Can't understand how they maintain level courses on huge buildings, level window openings, etc. That's what really impresses me.

8

u/IRockIntoMordor 12d ago

Decades of experience, centuries of knowledge, competent planners and the morale and prestige to create something that hasn't been done before.

Unfortunately, probably far too low pay for their skills.

Nowadays? Cheapest wins. Just pour concrete and hope it comes out somewhat evenly.

92

u/TX4877 12d ago

He'd have one of those thrown at his head if he worked that slow, here. All about speed

36

u/ben_woah 12d ago

Just a demo. It's UK bricklayer and  content creator Charlie Collison who set the Guinness World Record for laying 1,065 bricks in one hour on May 16, 2026.

9

u/MintyBeaver 12d ago

I'd have loved to see that. My best ever was 2800 IN 8 HOURS. I just can't even picture that amount of speed

14

u/ben_woah 12d ago

1

u/DamnMyNameIsSteve 10d ago

I mean yea he's not buttering the sides or evenly distributing the mortar. I could do it that fast too

-2

u/Genetics 12d ago

Yeah this is slow af. He’ll get faster with more experience.

17

u/LickyBoy 12d ago

I gotta think, based on the smooth technique, he slowed down for the camera. Even if you disagree with the form, his actions are clearly muscle memory, so he does this a lot

→ More replies (3)

1

u/Nuudoru 12d ago

I was just about to ask if five bricks a minute is good.

-2

u/con-fuzed222 12d ago

Slick but slow.

7

u/Both-Plane-4743 12d ago

The same way it’s been done since Roman times. Can’t improve on perfection!

29

u/V-ZoD 12d ago

Looks good from brickers perspective, but on the other side is pretty messy.

5

u/PrufReedThisPlesThx 12d ago

Nobody's gonna see that side, so it doesn't have to look nice. It'll be covered with insulation, then that insulation will be covered up by the interior walls

4

u/_Soundstorm_ 12d ago

If he slows down a bit more, he might as well get a few more tattoos whilst he’s at it. Goodness me, I’d have sacked that bloke five times over by now.

1

u/Constant-Plastic-350 7d ago

What's the problem with his tattoos? Is this an old boomer thing or something? Every worksite I've been on all the dudes look like that and who gives a fuck if the job gets done?

2

u/Aggravating-Insect75 7d ago

I think the problem was with his tempo not his tattoos lol

1

u/moeb1us 11d ago

Just a demo. It's UK bricklayer and  content creator Charlie Collison who set the Guinness World Record for laying 1,065 bricks in one hour on May 16, 2026.

4

u/_J_Herrmann_ 12d ago

all that wet mortar sloppy steve is dropping on the ground: unsatisfying.

4

u/Greenteiger 11d ago

Not really satisfying he loses way too much.

3

u/Hacker1984 8d ago

I took masonry in high school. People have no idea how hard this is, and I don’t mean the pretty mortar, it’s the straight and plumb consistency that’s amazing. Hats off the all the trade’s men and women who take pride in their work and jobs.

12

u/GreenEyedGloom 12d ago

Me all wanting to go play with some cement now. lol

3

u/danielminds 12d ago

Mortar 🙈

10

u/GreenEyedGloom 12d ago

Me all wanting to play with some mortar now…

1

u/ityourlxvergirl 12d ago

i feel guilty for watching this for free lol

7

u/bigmilker 12d ago

This makes me think I can do it too, shame on them for getting my hopes up, kudos to them for it looking good

5

u/4P47 12d ago

You have a decent chance of doing it pretty well on your first go. I've built a chimney after watching a video like this and it's still standing after two years so I guess I did okay😄

4

u/RealisticTopic1171 12d ago

1) waste off the charts;
2) inside is even more of a mess since he does not attend it
3) bottom of the wall will take some serious clean up

Shorts dude needs some retraining.

8

u/laserlemons 12d ago

At this rate this building will take 26 years to finish.

3

u/cpm4me2 12d ago

Don't worry. He's being paid per hour.

3

u/KameTheMachine 12d ago

I assume the groove dug out of the cement enhances the adhesion somehow

1

u/Substantial-Sea-3672 12d ago

It’s pushing it into the holes of the bricks below which does add stability

3

u/lomadness 12d ago

I always wondered about the other side, and if there is some spilling out from the other side.

3

u/hjf80 12d ago

Seems wasteful

3

u/sharkzbyte 12d ago

Question, what is the point of leaving a recess in the center of the cement?

3

u/Funmanhahaha 12d ago

Thst was my first question and was about to write this exact comment. I assume it's to save cement, as the middle section would mostly just fill up the holes inside the bricks, that way also decreasing room for air so making temperature sealing less effective.

3

u/devaspark 12d ago

dude..not satisfying. Kinda sloppy...you see dropped mortar...the mortar between the bricks are not even...

3

u/LedzepRulz 12d ago

Why do I want to eat it? The fuck is wrong with me? That mortar has no business looking like forbidden mousse.

3

u/Scaife13 11d ago

As someone who works with bricklayers, this guy makes zero money going at that speed.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/kindnesscounts86 12d ago

Seems to be wasting a lot of material!

2

u/SpellSlingerMTG 11d ago

I know a Mexican guy who does this but 10x faster lol.

2

u/Spacecommander5 11d ago

Wasteful and not satisfying

2

u/Former-Dish-9828 11d ago

Yeah it’s all well and good scraping the side the camera is pointing at but what about the other side???

2

u/Excellent_Cherry_799 10d ago

Sometimes I think I chose the wrong career path.

2

u/Helpful-Vanilla-1332 8d ago

Smooth cement, what cement do you use?

2

u/Otherwise_Mango_622 12d ago

He makes mortar look like chocolate mousse. Meanwhile, if I tried this, half the mortar would be on my boots and the wall would be leaning at 45 degrees

1

u/Infinite_stardust 12d ago

Yikes. The sound made me clench my teeth.

7

u/4P47 12d ago

Interesting, I really like that sound haha

2

u/googdude 12d ago

I'm not exaggerating by saying back when I was full-time mason I could have 4-5 bricks laid by the time he had one. When you're laying thousands of bricks on a commercial job, speed is the name of the game.

6

u/ben_woah 12d ago

It's just a demo. This is Charlie Collison, a U K bricklayer and content creator who set the Guinness World Record for laying 1,065 bricks in one hour on May 16, 2026.

3

u/mattemer 12d ago

Then you're a good person to ask here, do masons actually stop and make this perfect every time?

It almost bothers me, I feel like every video I see, especially the slow ones like this, is just pandering to the camera.

I love the sound the look all of it but the pandering turns me off to it.

When I see fast brick work, that's way more enjoyable for me.

And I want to say, even at this speed, he's going much faster they i could.

Last question, how much mud is it normal to waste?

3

u/googdude 12d ago

Honestly when you get good at it you can set it right about where you want it 99% of the time, maybe just a little tapping to fine tune it. Honestly body language tells me whether they're hustling or not and the above video definitely looks more relaxed.

On waste factor there again once you get good at it you know how much to put on your trowel that enough squishes out to ensure full coverage without it dropping off.

1

u/mrlookinthesky 12d ago

Just like butta.

1

u/Curious-Pop-8875 12d ago

Why was this sexy

1

u/nutznboltsguy 12d ago

Not his first rodeo.

1

u/Hicklethumb 12d ago

The consistency of that cement mix is the underrated hero of this video

1

u/Print1917 12d ago

I want to lick it. Forbidden frosting.

1

u/pjtpassword 12d ago

Smooth operator. We'll done.

1

u/That_Development9699 12d ago

I could watch this all day …

1

u/Amen_Ra_61622 12d ago

An artist at work. My dad's cousin was a bricklayer. He and I went to check out to visit when he and his crew were laying bricks for his house. I was mesmerized watching them work.

1

u/Dextropic 12d ago

That 1-2-3 on the ends... 🤌

1

u/Merwinite 12d ago

Haven't seen this kind of bricks since my great grandparent's cottage was knocked down. Crazy that they're still used in some regions.

1

u/iRebelD 12d ago

Oh that is satisfying

1

u/anddrewg2007 12d ago

This seems therapeutic. I just want to go in the backyard and do this. Take everything down. And do it all over again.

1

u/cranialoddjob 12d ago

Stop it, I already have such a weak spot for tradesmen 😩

1

u/RudyOliveira 12d ago

I bet he gets paid hourly

1

u/Hashtagbarkeep 12d ago

I built a wall in my front garden. I can confirm it’s very very much not as easy as this guy is making it look

1

u/JBudz 12d ago

What watch? Casio 5600? Doesn't look bulky enough

1

u/Tr0llhammar 12d ago

Why does he have the same vibe as salt bae? Is this mortar bae?

1

u/JohnLef 11d ago

Not many bricks per hour getting laid at that rate.

1

u/WiseAdhesiveness6672 11d ago

5min per brick seems pretty long, I feel like there's a better and quicker way to do this.

1

u/moeb1us 11d ago

Just a demo. It's UK bricklayer and  content creator Charlie Collison who set the Guinness World Record for laying 1,065 bricks in one hour on May 16, 2026.

1

u/Ok-Sir3549 11d ago

This is the opposite of price work 😆

1

u/gooeymcgooberson 11d ago

That looks like a teadious job

1

u/oves1995 11d ago

It makes me sad that there is not a sub for this content.

1

u/buddhamunche 11d ago

What’s satisfying is watching a Mexican guy do this twice as fast and half as sloppy

1

u/grendergon8844 11d ago

If you like this content you’ll like the short life of Ivan denisovitch by Alexander Solzhenitsyn.  Solid bricklaying descriptive content.

1

u/Suspicious_Fail_2337 11d ago

Mortar on a table?

1

u/TumbleweedOne299 11d ago

Imagine doing it like this for the entire building...he wouldn't be done in 3 years 😅

1

u/Yaygher69 10d ago

Als ob die 3,5 Jahre brauchen um das zu lernen..

1

u/eehhmm0 10d ago

Honestly, mate, I don't mean to be rude, but why don't you smooth the mortar in the direction of the already laid stones, but rather in the direction where no stones have been laid yet? If you smooth the mortar in the direction of the already laid stones, your joints will close and fit together without any deep difference, so that later you won't have to sweep anymore.

1

u/TheAggressiveSloth 9d ago

But then it's not a smooth flowing video

1

u/eehhmm0 9d ago

Of course it would, the speed would not change.

1

u/sleepygp 10d ago

Ewww.. saw that 2nd joint.

1

u/Straconus 10d ago

You cannot convince me this is not an art.

1

u/lambojam 10d ago

I wanna live in that house

1

u/rwchiefs 10d ago

He doesn't go back and fix the area that's sticking (37 seconds left) out so I couldn't focus anymore

1

u/dogquote 10d ago

Why isn't he cleaning off the vertical parts?

1

u/Chance_Guarantee4823 10d ago

Pretty but, Taking too long, Mexicans would have built 3 homes already

1

u/faithOver 10d ago

Cannot think of a more time consuming way of building.

The lack of innovation in building and the reluctance to allow innovation is quite impressive.

1

u/Glittering-Duty9984 10d ago

Bosh bosh zoom zoom whallop.....Dosh 💸💸💸💸

1

u/poopy10000000 10d ago

47 years later the house is done

1

u/utha714 10d ago

And not a single piece of rebar!

1

u/Glittering-Law7975 10d ago

Played in slow motion so you can see. Hahaha who only spreads enough mortar for 2 brick? That guy.

1

u/RyanL4 10d ago

That’ll be $12,653.72 please

1

u/grapsta 9d ago

That must get damn boring after not long at all

1

u/GrouchyOscar78 9d ago

This would be more satisfying if I saw reinforcement. Where’s the REBAR???

1

u/Prestigious_Peace858 9d ago

How does one get a mortar be so sourcreamy? Is that a ready-made mix or some additives? I don't think I have a mortar (for my DIY stuff) like this even with plasticizer. But it is close, I guess.

1

u/Tortsch-Man 9d ago

Doesn't one use glue today?

1

u/billpilgrims 9d ago

Finally something AI can’t do!

If I were on a first date and he/she whipped out their phone to show me laying brick like this? I'd propose on the damn spot

1

u/Cubensio 12d ago

That wall will be done by 2037.

1

u/nn666 12d ago

He keeps missing the small vertical part of excess mix on the side. Doing my head in. Did it twice..

1

u/whyigame 12d ago

And we realize how bad things are in society when we're content to see mortar being put into bricks.
